Basic Trope: An accident in a lab that gave a character their unusual powers/abilities.
- Straight: Due to a chemical spill, Dr. Claws transformed into a werewolf, and can use this ability at will.
- Exaggerated:
- Dr. Claws' lab accident was a series of Disaster Dominoes. He now has a plethora of magical powers.
- All of the scientists are superpowered as a result of lab accidents.
- Downplayed: Dr. Claws is now a Little Bit Beastly as a result of the accident.
- Justified: Dr. Claws was creating a formula that would transform someone, and accidentally used it on himself.
- Inverted: Dr. Claws loses his abilities in the lab accident.
- Subverted:
- Other characters believe that Dr. Claws is a werewolf because of a lab accident, but they later find out that he became a werewolf due to getting bitten by one.
- Dr. Claws spills chemicals on himself by accident and starts to believe that he'll turn into a werewolf any second, but nothing happens.
- Double Subverted:
- He did, however, gain the ability to run quickly from a lab accident.
- Dr. Claws didn't turn into a werewolf because it isn't the full moon yet. When the next full moon happens, he begins the first transformation.
- Parodied:
- A student is heating water in a beaker for a science lab demonstration, and accidentally spills some and gains powers.
- Dr. Claws spills chemicals on himself hoping to get superpowers... and gets chemical poisoning instead.
- Zig-Zagged: Dr. Claws was bitten by a werewolf and as a result became one, but it wasn't until an accident in the lab that he managed to gain control over the ability.
- Averted: Nobody gains any unusual powers, abilities, or other features from a lab accident.
- Enforced: A backstory for a superpowered Mad Scientist (whether they're still a scientist or not) will almost certainly have this.

- Invoked: Dr. Claws mixes a few of his substances together and pours them on himself to try to gain superpowers.
- Exploited: Dr. Claws uses his new abilities as a werewolf for fighting his enemies.
- Defied: Dr. Claws always follows proper safety protocols to avoid having lab accidents.

- Conversed: "Why do so many characters get their powers from accidents in labs?"
- Implied: The source of Dr. Claws' ability to transform into a werewolf is a Noodle Incident, but since he's a Mad Scientist, this is a possibility.
- Deconstructed: Someone intentionally sabotages Dr. Claws's experiment in a failed attempt to kill him.
