    open/close all folders

    Prejudice
Basic Trope: A character wants to be friends with another person, who is of a different class or race.
  • Straight: Rose is a lonely white rich girl, who wants to be friends with Jackie, a poor black girl, but can't because of her parents.
  • Exaggerated: Rose can't even take a gaze at Jackie without getting bashed because of their race and class differences.
  • Downplayed: Rose's parents allows her to hang around with Jackie, as long as they don't involve staying over.
  • Justified: The show's setting is around the Civil War, or the Civil Rights Movement.
  • Inverted: Rose and Jackie are encouraged to become friends because of their races.
  • Subverted: The families of Rose and Jackie dislike each other, but they aren't racist...
  • Double Subverted: ...they just don't think Rose should associate with someone so poor.
  • Parodied: In this world, people of different skin color or social class literally repel each other, like magnets.
  • Zig Zagged: The parents' approval of Rose's and Jackie's friendship vacillates randomly.
  • Averted: Rose and Jackie can be friends, race isn't an issue.
  • Enforced: The writers want to write about how racism is wrong.
  • Lampshaded: "Too bad Rose and Jackie's parents are blinded by race. They seem like they could be good friends."
  • Invoked: The town gossip tells Rose's parents that they should not let Rose associate with Jackie.
  • Exploited: Malcolm Xerox uses Rose's parents as a reason why white people are bad.
  • Defied: Jackie's parents have a talk with Rose's at the first sign of disapproval.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: "That is one racist family."
  • Implied: Rose acts very secretive about her friendship with Jackie.

  • Exaggerated: Rome and Julie's families have standing shoot-to-kill orders on each other, and yet still become best friends (or even a couple).
  • Downplayed: ???
  • Justified: Rome and Julie don't care that the other is from the other family - relationships should be about the person's character, not his/her pedigree.

  • Straight: Ann and Andy can't be friends because Andy is accused of murder.
  • Exaggerated: Ann and Andy can't be friends because Andy is Ax-Crazy and tried to murder half of her family.
  • Downplayed: Andy was accused of stealing from a lemonade stand, and Ann's parents are mildly suspicious of the friendship.

  • Enforced: "What better way to add suspense then to make the main characters friends with a potential murderer?"
  • Lampshaded: "Y'know, even if he is guilty, it's not like he's a serial killer."
  • Invoked: Andy is framed for a murder by someone who has a crush on him and wants to get rid of possible competition.
