Basic Trope: A character wants to be friends with another person, who is of a different class or race.
- Straight: Rose is a lonely white rich girl, who wants to be friends with Jackie, a poor black girl, but can't because of her parents.
- Exaggerated: Rose can't even take a gaze at Jackie without getting bashed because of their race and class differences.
- Downplayed: Rose's parents allows her to hang around with Jackie, as long as they don't involve staying over.
- Justified: The show's setting is around the Civil War, or the Civil Rights Movement.
- Inverted: Rose and Jackie are encouraged to become friends because of their races.
- Subverted: The families of Rose and Jackie dislike each other, but they aren't racist...

- Justified: Alice's parents don't want her picking up Bob's bad habits.
