Basic Trope: Dogs are the main characters, while cats are secondary characters.

  • Straight: Bob the dog is the protagonist, and his friend Alice the cat is the deuteragonist.
  • Exaggerated: The characters are all dogs - a cat only appears as a minor character.
  • Downplayed: Alice is still a very important character and occasionally gets scenes to herself, but Bob is the main character regardless.
  • Justified:
    • Bob wanted a lancer to his hero, and Alice was a good choice.
    • Alice is training under Bob.
    • Bob belongs to the family that lives in the house everything takes place in, while Alice, a neighbor's cat, does not and only makes infrequent visits.
  • Inverted: Alice the cat is the protagonist, while Bob the dog is the deuteragonist.
  • Subverted: Bob ends up injured in battle, so Alice takes over as the lead protagonist.
  • Double Subverted: But when Bob recovers, he returns to being the protagonist.
  • Parodied: ???
  • Zig-Zagged: Alice and Bob are the two main characters, and regularly take turns being the protagonist.
  • Averted:
    • The characters are all dogs or all cats.
    • No cats or dogs appear at all.
    • Cats and dogs both get equal attention.
  • Enforced: The creators of the story thought that dogs would be more popular among audiences than cats would, so they had the dog be the main character. However, they also considered that some audiences would like cats as well, so they had one as the sidekick.
  • Lampshaded: ???
  • Invoked: See Justified, plus the reason is Bob especially seeks a cat.
  • Exploited: The Big Bad sends a villainous dog with his cat sidekick to face off against Bob and Alice.
  • Defied:
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: "I wonder why it's always the dog that's the main character while the cat is the supporting character."
