Basic Trope: A character is buried in the sand for comedic effect.
- Straight: While Alice is sleeping on the beach, her mischievous brother Bob buries her in the sand with only her head sticking out as a prank.
- Exaggerated:
- Alice's entire body is buried.
- Alice is buried headfirst.
- Downplayed:
- Alice sits up straight and Bob buries her legs in sand, which makes her look silly, but doesn't prevent her from getting up easily if she needs to.
- Justified:
- Alice actually volunteered to be buried. She wanted to know how it feels to experience this trope.
- Alice is buried by a tidal wave.
- Bob's a mischievous little shit. That's all.
- Subverted:
- While Alice is sleeping on the beach, Bob plays in the sand, but instead of burying Alice, he instead constructs sculptures around her body, leaving her alone.
- Double Subverted:
- Alice is still effectively trapped by the sand sculptures, and Bob tries to prevent her from standing up, since it would make the sculptures fall down.
- Lampshaded: "Can you dig me out of this?"
- Exploited:
- Discussed: "Remember that summer when I buried you on the beach?"
- Played for Laughs:
- Alice is buried in the sand at the very beginning of the trip to the beach. She spends the entirety of the trip buried with a variety of embarrassments occurring to her that would have not happened had she not been buried.
- Alice is buried in the sand and winds up being entered into a Sandcastle Contest.
- Played For Drama:
- Alice's brother forgets about her and she asphyxiates to death from not being about to move her chest to breathe.
- Alice is buried in the sand by the villain and is left to drown from the incoming tide.
