- Aragorn's increasing instability. One of the most frightening moments is when he catches Faramir looking in the palantír. If Legolas hadn't intervened, he would have killed Faramir.
- "I have lost the longing for the sea." The implications - that Legolas will never be able to leave Middle Earth - are horrifying.
- Aragorn, while trying to heal Legolas, goes into a trance.He looked at Legolas and saw the darkness in the form of a great beast curled about him, its claws sunk deep into his body while its bat wings arched around him like the cruel parody of an embrace. And in the pale form of his friend he saw nothing, no spark, no vital light at all.
