”Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha! This is Pandora’s Box! It contains all that is evil, all that you call the dark force! This is a present from our world to all of you! Take it!”

Moments pages are Spoilers Off. You Have Been Warned.

  • The destruction of Palma when the prison satellite Gaila rammed into the planet. As Rolf and his party try to transverse the satellite and battling robots, suddenly there’s an explosion and the satellite starts moving. When the party reaches the control panel, they can see the satellite’s trajectory towards Palma. And there is nothing they can do to stop it.
    • Adding to the Nightmare Fuel is that Rolf and his party do not survive the collision of Gaila with Palma. When they “wake up” on Tyler’s ship, they have actually been cloned. Meaning that no matter if you hadn’t needed to clone anyone prior to this, from this moment moving forward your party consists of clones.
  • In the aftermath of gas mining, Dezoris has been left with a gaping hole that has covered a significant portion of the planet. Palmans up and abandoned the mining so suddenly, that they left their own pets behind and are left wandering the hole. So massive is this hole that spacecrafts dock in the hole, and whole towns are isolated from each other. Furthermore, poisonous gas continuously emits from this hole, and you cannot stop it. The game concludes before a resolution is found for this.
  • The fight with Dark Force in Phantasy Star II has the reputation for being the hardest Dark Force fight in the entire franchise, and the reason being is pure Nightmare Fuel. Dark Force is able to curse party members and “turn them evil”. When this happens, you cannot control the party member. They will try to flee the fight, or their stats will decrease and make them less effective in battle. And while it’s possible to break the curse with the Neisword, it doesn’t always work.
  • Mother Brain. A supercomputer that has been “caring” for the Algol system for the longest time. While it appears to have benevolent purposes — fulfilling the desires of Algol so they have little wants or cares — Mother Brain was actually set up with nefarious purposes. People from Earth, corrupted by Dark Force, created Mother Brain with the express purpose of making the population of Algol weak so that they could be easily wiped out and they could move in. When Rolf and his comrades confront Mother Brain for the final battle, the system warns the heroes that if they destroy her they will doom Algol and many people will die. And the scariest thing is that Mother Brain is completely right.
  • Never Dream. A somber piece of music that gives the feeling of melancholy and unease. With a song title like “Never Dream”, this does not seem meant to be uplifting. It’s almost like you’re meant to give up hope when you hear this song. When does this song play in-game? The end credits.
    • The ending itself is a terrifying thing to witness, in the end Rolf and his friends destroy Mother Brain, who warns them that the people of Motavia are not used to life without her care and the majority will die cursing their fate. And they destroy her anyway. As it turns out this was not an empty threat. Most of humanity dies exactly that as revealed by the sequels. And then its revealed Mother Brain was built by Earthlings (Who have by now destroyed the earth with pollution) who built her to make humans on Algo weak and reliant on her so they could take the Algol Solar system for themselves.
