  • Jimmy's speech to Ray about how the family is able to put up with so much stuff.
Jimmy: You know what's not nothing? The doctor tells you there's something "wrong" with your kid. All the thing he's never gonna do, and it's a nice long list. But look at your brother. He's great, and smart, and funny. Without naming names, he's apparently cooler than some of my other kids. So now when something happens, it's like...what else ya got? Bring it on. I get it. Normal seems good. But guess what? We're not normal. We're better. We're...bulletproof.
  • Even though the faculty isn't very good at handling JJ's accessibility needs, and most people are still quite ignorant, all the students at the school become fast friends with JJ and genuinely like him.
  • Ray and Dylan's constant support for JJ is always heartwarming, but this tumblr post points out an especially nice scene from "H-a-l-Halloween". Ray and Dylan have to race to be the first to tell their dad that they don't want to be part of the annual family group costume, but in the next scene the two of them and JJ are yelling at their dad. The implication is that the two of them woke up JJ, helped him into his wheelchair, then raced to their parents' room.
  • Jimmy encouraging JJ to try sled hockey again, even though JJ got hurt, by pointing out that the win in this sport isn't being handed to him and it's JJ's for the taking.
  • Ray finding out at the hospital with appendicitis that his parents are just as protective as him as they are JJ, even if they don't show it very much.
  • JJ's speech to Dylan in "S-i-Sick D-a-Day" after she realizes that he's been trying to keep her from flirting with his classmate because the guy's a jerk.
JJ: I don't have some basic big-brother moves. I can't beat anyone up for you. I can't drive you places, but I'll protect you my own way.
    Dylan: Your way's perfect.
  • Kenneth telling the family that he took an annoying job as a weekend manager at a grocery store just so he could afford to keep aiding JJ.
    • Kenneth goes into mission-control mode to keep the De Mayos from wreaking havoc and, to minimize damage, comes up with a game plan to manage each member of the family—except JJ. For him, the only order he gives is for one of the employees to take over as his aide while the rest of the family is distracted.
  • Jimmy and Maya realizing that Ray wants to make lots of money in the future not because he's greedy, but because he wants to be able to make JJ's life easier in the future. When they broach the subject at home, Dylan immediately joins it because she'd been thinking the exact same thing.
    • Veers into tearjerker territory, however, when the family discusses the very real possibility that JJ may not ever be able to live life on his own—and none of them realize that JJ is listening in.
  • JJ finally getting a mentor with CP in the form of Lee.
  • Ray and Dylan racing each other through the hospital to see JJ, who has just returned from surgery. Dylan narrowly wins the race, but allows Ray to see JJ first when she sees how much it means to him to have that time with his big brother. Ray kissing Dylan's forehead is also very sweet.
  • Maya meets with her estranged father, to which they both snap out sarcastic apologies for each other. After a while, this actually makes them realize that Both Sides Have a Point and how badly they've both been hurt, and reconcile.
