" The Eightfold Fence"

  • Blackthorne apologizing to Usami for his 'bad manners' at the onset of their political marriage, and offering her his guns. There's no love or chemistry between them, but Usami does appreciate that he's trying.

"Crimson Sky"

  • When summoned by Ichiba, nominally in the interest of her son Yaechiyo, Blackthorne makes sure to keep his mood light by greeting the heir with a wink and a grin, which Yaechiyo returns.
  • In the penultimate episode, Mariko prepares to commit seppuku as part of Toranaga's plan to strip Ishido of support. As a Catholic Christian, she asks fellow Christian Regent Kiyama to second her so that she will be spared from eternal damnation, as suicide is regarded as a mortal sin in Catholicism. When he fails to show, Blackthorne - who loves Mariko and has begged her all season to live - offers to be her second. He holds onto her crucifix and is prepared to swing the fatal blow, willing to give her that which she has been denied for almost fifteen years, as an expression of his love for her.
    • Later, with her seppuku averted, Mariko is visited by Blackthorne...and the two finally, knowingly consummate their relationship, no words spoken and no more barriers between them.

"A Dream of a Dream"

  • Fuji goes to Blackthorne and announces that Toranaga has finally granted her request to become a nun after she lays her husband and son's ashes to rest. While initially saddened to hear this, Blackthorne happily blesses her and says she'll become a great nun, and the two bond one last time by giving their loved ones a Burial at Sea before Fuji departs.
  • Toranaga finally gets to hold his youngest son and thanks the ladies Shizu and Kiri for keeping him safe.
