If Shirley knows that Caroline is in love with Robert (she seems to know) and that she is jealous of Shirley's possible marriage to Robert, why doesn't Shirley tell Caroline she is not in love with Robert? It would have saved Caroline a lot of heartache.
Because Shirley doesn't seem to realise that Roberts intends to marry her. She is actually totally stunned when he proposes to her.
