Anke's Defection
- Seems to have been overcomplicated for plot tension purposes. West German law at the time allowed any East German to claim automatic citizenship in the Federal Republic of Germany, if they could get on the other side of the border or Berlin Wall. So even if she couldn't have defected to the USA immediately, she could have gotten West German citizenship and used the legal right (guaranteed by treaty) of unhindered travel West Berliners could use to fly from there to, say, Bonn or Frankfurt, and from thence to any part of West Germany the BKA deeemed reasonably safe from Stasi penetration.
