Headscratchers / At Dead of Night

• Jimmy used a loaded gun for "self-defence" in England. Self-defence or no, the police don't do a single shit about him carrying an illegal weapon. This is all assuming that the cops were actually notified of what kind of weapon Jimmy used (I mean, why wouldn't they tell the cops?).
  • The UK didn't ban handguns until 1997. The incident probably occurred before then. Besides, I'm pretty sure he used a knife.
  • Jimmy used a letter opener to kill Harvey. Harvey was the one chasing him around with a handgun. The game does not clarify what year this was, or even how old Jimmy was at the time.
    • There are actually a few clues as to Jimmy's age. Harvey is shown standing up when he's stabbed, and appears to have been at least a little taller than Maya, assuming the camera is at Maya's eye level. Rose later mentions that Jimmy was taken to the precinct, ostensibly for questioning, until she was able to convince the officers he acted in self-defense; in the vision preceding this, she's shown welcoming Jimmy back to the hotel, and appears to be about level with the POV character. She also says he began helping her run the hotel following this, with the insinuation that his shows started sometime shortly afterwards. Taken altogether, Jimmy had to have been in his late teens to early twenties, at the very youngest. In the modern day, when we see Maya using what appears to be a relatively current model cell phone to call her friends, Jimmy looks to be in his fifties or sixties - and talks like it, too.
    • Jimmy's birth certificate says he was born in 1976; if he's only in his teens at the time (certainly not an adult, otherwise he probably wouldn't have been let go for stabbing someone, even in self defence) it places it no later than 1993 (1994 would make Jimmy 18 and legally an adult).
  • Also worth mentioning that Harvey specifically mentions the gun originally belonged to Harvey's father, and implies that the few rounds of ammunition in it were part of the package. Harvey never outright claims to have kept the gun for any use at all, so it's unlikely the police would even know about it - until he decided to use it to threaten Jimmy, that gun was just a very dangerous heirloom.

• Probably a dumb question but if Harvey was the owner of the hotel, why didn’t he just kick Jimmy and Rose out for her sons bad behavior?
  • Because Amy's could be written off as an accident and Dr Bose was believed guilty of sexual abuse and Harvey had a problem with Jimmy, even before the stabbing (as he knew he lied about Dr Bose) and things had begun to escalate. Since the police believed Rose about Dr Bose, she could have a case to sue Harvey for discrimination against her son.

• So why exactly did Maya decide to stay in the hotel and look for Jimmy's secrets? She already saw him choking out one of her friends, she had the master key, she could have left and walked to the nearest building and alerted someone about what she saw. There was no incentive for her to stay at all. Yes, the game wouldn't happen but it's still an egregious Violation of Common Sense.
  • Sea View Hotel is pretty isolated (it's on the edge of a seaside cliff and Maya hikes up to it through what looks like a forested area), the weather is thunder and lightning, and there's no cellphone signal or phone service. Maya probably reasoned that by the time the weather cleared up and she was able to track down help, her friends would be done for, and she couldn't stand the thought of saving herself and leaving them behind—foolhardy, but brave.

• Probably just a matter of suspension of disbelief, but how come the hotel is empty save for Maya, her friends, and Jimmy? Even if the place is not popular, I find it hard to believe that there would be absolutely no other guests and that there is no staff whatsoever.
