Fridge / At Dead of Night

Go To

Fridge Brilliance:

  • Jimmy/Hugo never follows Maya to the stairs, basement and ground floor, the first two are because those places have very painful memories attached to them (Amy falling and dying at the bottom of the stairs, Harvey locking Jimmy at the very same room his father used to punish him), but why not patrol the ground floor? Because Jimmy never wanted to hurt anyone, so he's somehow influencing Hugo to not go there to give Maya and her friends a chance to escape.
  • Maya must have an interest in divination, since she already knows how to use a mirror and compass to find clues and ghosts.

Fridge Horror:

  • Amy's death gets even worse if you pay close attention to the last vision before you see her at the bottom of the stairs. She tells you she felt so light that she thought she could float down safely, and then you receive a vision of the fall. It's bad enough that this is likely exactly what Amy saw, but two details drive it home even harder: First is the high pitched scream you hear near the end, partially hidden under the violin sting. Second is the way the camera slowly moves to the side as it falls, until it sits directly over a banister at the bottom. Amy didn't land on the stairs proper. She broke her back or neck bouncing off the banister first.
    • The fact that she's lying on the stairs and hasn't fallen in the gap in between, implies that she hit the banister front down, possibly smashing her ribs, and her body fell to the right, off the banister and onto the floor.
  • Doctor Bose's death is already plenty awful, but one let's player made a particularly gruesome observation. Taking into account the distance between each floor, even if he only set the elevator to go up one level it's very likely that the noose was pulled much tighter than was necessary to strangle him or break his neck. There's a very real possibly that his hanging turned into a decapitation.
    • Speaking of breaking his neck - Doctor Bose goes from struggling to hanging limply much faster than he would if he was simply strangled to death, and the way he goes limp is almost obscene for how bonelessly his body moves. His neck was absolutely broken before that elevator stopped moving.
  • Harvey's death is arguably the least horrific of the four we're shown, if only because he was stabbed and went down spouting a fountain of blood - a much more "mundane" death, especially as far as horror games go. Except his movements before going down indicate that he either attempted to pull the knife out himself, or grabbed at Jimmy's weapon arm in an attempt to stop him. The sounds he makes imply that knife went all the way into his esophagus; there wouldn't be that much wet gurgling otherwise. Harvey was throat cut by a sharpened letter opener, and took long enough to bleed out that he was still able to clutch at Jimmy's arm and loudly attempt to call for help all the way until he hit the floor - if not longer.
    • We know Jimmy stabbed him. We know he went down immediately. We don't know whether Jimmy twisted or dragged the blade once it was in him, and we don't know if Jimmy inflicted any additional damage after he went down.
  • Rose Hall elected to burn herself alive using turpentine and a lighter after Jimmy went to uncover his father's grave. She specifically tells Maya, "If I hadn't done it, Jimmy would have. Or rather - Hugo would have." The poor woman was convinced that her own son (albeit under the control of a dangerous alter at best, or a supernatural evil at worst) would either burn her alive or do something even worse if she was still alive when he got back. This is the son she fought so fiercely to defend that she ignored one suspicious death, indirectly helped cause a second, and actively helped Jimmy avoid prosecution for a third.
  • Jimmy/Hugo tells Maya he means to keep her at the hotel with him forever, and claims that she has the same "fire" in her that's been burning through his family for generations. If you allow Jimmy to catch you during the final sequence after this, you can see him pour something into a rag and then hold the rag over your nose. We know from Rose that he tied at least one female audience member up and locked her in a room before his mother told him the truth. The man doesn't want you dead. He wants something worse.
