• Part of why Ah Toy falls for Nellie Davenport is because Nellie is a complete outsider to the politics of Chinatown. Between the tongs and the police, Ah Toy could never afford to put herself in a position where she could be usurped or used as a pawn in some power struggle. With Nellie however, such risks are not a concern and thus, she can let her guard down around Nellie and show her more vulnerable side.
• A lot of the accent slip-ups on Ah Sahm's part can be chalked up to the Doylist explanation that Andrew Koji is a Brit attempting an American accent and also speak Cantonese, a language Koji clearly doesn't speak fluently. The Watsonian reasoning however can be that due to Ah Sahm being bilingual, bits and pieces of one language is interfering with the other, resulting in what can be Hand Waved as some mispronunciations.
