Fridge Logic

  • Whenever you kill a shotgun-toting hybrid, the gun it's carrying is jammed. So how was it shooting at you in the first place?
    • Explained. The shotgun has been modified to work with the Hybrid's mutated limbs, rendering it unusable by the Soldier.
  • An audio log mentions that the "R-grade cyber goodies" about to be installed in the player-character are illegal. So then why are they readily available aboard the Von Braun?
    • Also, Dr. Janice Polito was a civilian doctor with Tri Optimum. Yet a message bearing her name is enough to order a military soldier (Soldier G65434-2) to undergo brain surgery and cyber-implants. Either he was specifically placed under her authority somehow or Tri Op is such a MegaCorp that she can order soldiers around.
      • If you listen to the log in question she only ordered he be placed in the cryo unit to heal, that wasn't an order for the actual surgery.

Fridge Brilliance

  • Thanks to the Von Braun's FTL drive, SHODAN can rewrite reality to her specifications. At no point is it stated this ability applies only to space and matter, or is limited to functioning in the same direction as the arrow of time. Knowing that the grove containing Sub-processing Unit 43893 must reach Tau Ceti V in time for the Von Braun's crew to discover it and revive her, SHODAN reached into her own past to retrieve the grove and put it where it needed to be to facilitate her rebirth and apotheosis. (That this should seem paradoxical is merely evidence of your limited mind, i-i-insect.)
    • This probably counts as fridge horror because it raises the question, what if the ending was entirely faked? If she can re-write reality, then what if she simply re-wrote the ending to never happen? It's entirely possible she killed the hacker.
  • The reason SHODAN explicitly tells you to destroy both shuttles rather than just destroy any eggs the Many loaded aboard them? To make you destroy your last possible way of escaping both the Many **and her**. She doesn't want to lose her puppet.

Fridge Horror

  • As described by Prefontaine's audio logs, the Many is truly superior in many ways to Humanity, easily conquering the ship by mind control and easily wreaking havoc over everyone, despite the saftey precautions. What if SHODAN truly is perfect at creating god? And even if the Many were defeated, it wasn't really the Player who singlehandedly destroyed the Many. It was SHODAN, guiding them throughout the game. In other words, the player is literally, her Avatar. So yes, SHODAN should never be allowed to play god, because she is indeed far too good at it.
    • Even worse is the fact that memory altering is confirmed to exist in the world of System Shock 2. SHODAN, in disguise as Polito, merely uses it to censor the recent memory of the player character. Now consider what a mad god could do with such technology on a large scale.

  • Multiple audio logs state that the Von Braun was launched with faulty radiation-handling systems ("That leak again"), grossly inadequate security for the ship's AI ("Xerxes"), and even unfinished circuitry (examine text for the Circuit Boards. This ship was supposed to be the pride of the company that took decades to design and build. What else have they been cutting corners on?
