Go To

CPU Kerfuffle is a livestream series run by ChongoShow (A.K.A. Ryan) on Twitch, following a series of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tournaments featuring level 9 CPU fighters and a partially-improvised overarching narrative that involves them. The series is often co-commentated by Ryan’s friends, including (in order of appearance) Alfred (PaperBoxHouse), Penny (SnapCube), Comona (ThatComona), Jay (JayMonoto), Joy (DollipDaze), Holly (Hollowtones), Katy (Katydiids), Dyvone (OverlordDyvone), and Red (Redbuddi).

The series (along with Ryan’s streams in general) went on hiatus in early 2022 after Kerfuffle #33. A few months after that, Ryan began running some test tournaments, which he then began posting about to his Discord server and slowly began adding additional lore to (with the caveat that they be considered non-canon to CPUK proper). These were titled the Non Canon Curiosity Tournaments, or NCCTs, and in addition to being readable on Discord they were also archived online for public access.

    Tropes in CPUK proper
  • Action Pet: Johannsen is Dantoinette's pet rat, and is more than capable of handling himself in combat. In his first fight in the series, he won against Captain Valentine..
  • Aerith and Bob: We have characters like Google, Mac and Cheese, Cha Cha Slide, and Corn on the Cob. Then we have characters like Dan and Larry.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Home MD loses an arm during his trip through time in Kerfuffle #18. Thankfully, he gets a mechanical arm by #19.
  • And There Was Much Rejoicing: Despite being given a full memorial, pretty much no one is saddened by Bling Bling Boy's death at the hands of the Grunk, likely because he blew up Malaysia.
  • Another Dimension: There are several instances of interdimensional travel within the series.
    • The series starts in the Jape Universe, where Mario from Super Mario is played by red Wario and Roy from Fire Emblem is played by Roy Koopa. These are corrected by shifting to the Corrected Universe.
    • Jay Monoto comes from another dimension in-universe.
    • Dantoinette is from a dimension where the Kerfuffle is done through Soul Calibur instead of Smash Bros.
    • It's revealed in #24 that Kanduka is actually Susan, the Dr Order of the alternate dimension that our Order was sent to at the end of #20, where the technology our Order brought back with her ended up advancing scientific progress by a significant number of years, to the point that two-way hologram communication is commercially available in 2015.
  • Arc Number: 7 years is an amount of time that pops up multiple times; it is the amount of time that both Folk and Larry traveled back in time to stop Doctor Order.
  • Arc Villain:
    • The Crimson is this for the first season, possessing Captain Valentine, killing the Grunk, and taking over the Kerfuffle.
    • Doctor Order is the villain of season 2, causing problems by experimenting on people and trying to usurp the goddess of time.
    • Crimson briefly serves as this for the beginning of season 3 while he plots to destroy the CPUK dimension by removing the Universal Constants.
  • Arc Welding:
    • Doctor Order was submitted after characters like Machiavelli, J0hn, Perfect Spriteman, and Larry had already appeared, and then retroactively became the person who created/experimented on them.
    • The Crimson was initially just a mysterious, interdimensional hivemind. With the development of the plot in season 2, however, it turns out that the Crimson is actually a guardian of dimensions, sibling to Chartreuse, guardian of time.
  • Audience Participation: Many characters are submitted by the viewers.
  • Back from the Dead: Sephiroth, despite being turned into paste, is to return for Kerfuffle #23 after being revived by Home/Larry.
  • Badass Adorable: Juniper Uppercut is an 8-year-old girl with enough power and skill to win her first ever tournament and nearly three-stock Google Plus.
  • Bad Future: Folk traveled back from one where Doctor Order took over the world, and is working to stop her this time.
  • Bait-and-Switch: In Kerfuffle 22 and 23, we are introduced to Kanduka, who is heavily implied to be a returning Doctor Order, with multiple hints that Order had somehow escaped her fate. But in 24, it's revealed that while Kanduka is technically Order, she's Order's counterpart from an alternate dimension who is horrified by our Order's actions, and she's a genuinely good person.
  • Berserk Button: Juniper Uppercut will absolutely beat you up if you cuss in her vicinity.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Inverted Trope. When Doctor Order defeats Dantoinette and is about to kill her, she gets stopped by Dantoinette's younger brother Danthony, who calls upon the other characters in the bracket to save her.
  • Big Good: Iggy, after erasing removing the Crimson from the CPUK dimension (except for what was left in Captain Crimson, becomes the head of the tournament. He remains so until Doctor Order takes over. After her defeat, he has returned to this position.
  • Brats with Slingshots: Juniper, being represented by the Animal Crossing villager, has a slingshot as one of her weapons.
  • Breather Episode:
    • In between the end of season 2 and the premiere of season 3, Chongo held a “bonus episode” removed from the larger narrative and featuring some of the often-forgotten one-off characters. However, it still had some wild moments and still tied into the greater plot in a few ways.
    • After Kerfuffle #31, Ryan immediately decided the next episode (Gaiden 5) to take a break from the heavy plot- it featured almost entirely new characters (plus Sax Jack, who hasn't been seen since season 1) and had no plot cutscenes up until the very end.
  • But Now I Must Go: After exorcising the Crimson out of Captain Valentine in Kerfuffle #11, Dantoinette leaves to go back to her home dimension, leaving her pet rat Johannsen to fight in the championship in her place.
  • The Bus Came Back: Dantoinette returns from her dimension at the end of Kerfuffle #19.
  • By the Power of Grayskull!: The cast yells "Spirit Release" when using a spirit other than a generic or synthetic spirit.
  • Cast Full of Gay: Many of the characters are part of the LGBT+ community, except for Mozilla, who is homophobic.
  • Cast Herd: As of the reboot, every character is a member of one of eight teams, Team Calibur (originally Team Crimson), Team Clutch, Team Cash Money, Team Charm, Team Cross, Team Chonk, Team Cones, and Team Craken.
  • Came Back Strong: The Grunk dies, and comes back and continues to kick ass.
  • Composite Character: A couple of examples, due to some character submissions overlapping and some improvisation.
    • Take On Marshmallow (T.O.M.) was the combination of two submitted characters who both happened to be gray Kirbys.
    • “Florida Man” and “Larry” were originally two separate character concepts, with the shapeshifter Larry only being “revealed” as the Florida Man from earlier in the series partway into Kerfuffle #11.
    • Home MD is also Larry, having been sent back in time 7 years from Kerfuffle #20.
    • Therapuppy got combined with Holly’s submission of “Your Neighbor’s Little Dog”, with Folk the Red Kraken member being combined with “Your Neighbor’s Little Dog: Bad Future”, making Folk Therapuppy’s future self and making this a twofold example.
  • Continuity Creep: There really is no inkling of a larger narrative at the beginning; it’s only when the Crimson is first mentioned that it all starts to come together.
  • Conveniently Interrupted Document: Home MD's file was read by Larry but the audience didn't get to see what it said until CPU Kerfuffle 20.
  • The Corruption: The Crimson is a corruptive possessive entity, and corrupts Captain Valentine to turn him into Captain Crimson.
  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: Mozilla. He's a CEO who apparently caused an oil spill and, as revealed in Kerfuffle #17, is homophobic.
  • Couch Gag: A trope for Ryan's streams in general, but during the intro set to Remix 200 Ryan always says something different followed by "Wait, hold on," during the break in the last Packing Pests portion.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: Captain Quadratic initially fights Blonde Sora as he believes that Blora is keeping information from him, but upon being defeated, seems to actually like him and suggests working together.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Tundra Jack starts enjoying himself and even interacting with the others, going as far as to battle Perfect Saltman to help him. Considering his backstory of living in the north and his palette change having warmer colors, you could say this is done literally as well.
  • The Determinator: Doctor Order has been known to do terrible things to her creations and those around her to achieve her ends. It becomes even clearer in the latter part of Kerfuffle #20, where she continues pressing forward on her goal of becoming a god even after being blocked from creating her perfect timeline by the Giant Space Flea from Nowhere.
  • The Dragon: Sephiroth acts as Doctor Order's right-hand man in season 2, aiding her plans, helping her fight Google and Chartreuse in Kerfuffle #19, and being one of the last bosses while the heroes are Storming the Castle.
  • Dramatic Irony: Throughout Kerfuffle #18, it’s noted that Home MD is mysteriously missing. The audience are the only ones who saw the cutscene at the beginning where he confronts Doctor Order.
  • Dramatic Unmask: The reveals that Larry was Florida Man and that Home MD was Larry were shapeshifting-assisted unmaskings, and ironically involved Larry putting a mask on.
  • Dropped a Bridge on Him: In Kerfuffle #21, after Bling Bling Boy is knocked out of bracket, The Grunk shows up out of nowhere and kills him... not that anyone cares.
  • Duels Decide Everything: Every episode must include a tournament, including the season 2 finale, where they have a tournament to decide the order of who will be fighting who in the climactic Boss Rush.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: After Doctor Order is finally defeated, pretty much everyone has achieved a greater level of happiness, except for those most loyal to Order.
  • Ensemble Cast: For the most part, there is no one real protagonist.
  • Evil Is Petty: Doctor Order. Her pettiness ranges from creating Google Plus specifically to spite Google to resurrecting someone and calling them "MY Grunk" just to one-up Home MD.
  • Evolving Credits: Upon the end of season 2, Ryan started playing Super Smashup Kerfuffle in the prestream for every CPUK stream. However, he also started editing sections to fit new characters and newly-revealed lore, so each episode has a new version of the mashup.
  • The Exile: Doctor Order's fate in #20, as Chartreuse sends her thousands of years into the past in an alternate timeline. In #24, it's revealed that this ended up being permanent. She tried to insert herself as a new goddess, but only managed to garner a small following and ended up trapped there for the rest of her days.
  • Extra-Long Episode: CPU Kerfuffle #20 is the absolute longest episode of the series, with the YouTube VOD being seven hours and fifty-one minutes long. A good portion of that time was spent on the pre-stream, art showcase, and on the hosts speaking emotionally about the impact of the show, but the fact that it is the longest still stands.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Despite knowing that Folk is actually Therapuppy from reading through the file system, Dr. Order somehow completely missed the file revealing Larry is actually Home MD.
  • Failed Attempt at Drama: In Kerfuffle #20, Mach 2 tries to deliver a We Can Rule Together speech to Machiavelli, only for Machiavelli to leave in the middle of the speech.
  • Flaming Sword: Google, being represented by Roy, has one. Hell yeah.
  • Foreshadowing: Surprisingly, considering the improvised nature of the series. Notable examples:
    • Edgeworth’s odd behavior in Kerfuffle #15 signalling that he was, in fact, Sephiroth.
    • Home MD seems to know a lot about spirits, and seems to have some idea of things that are going to happen. He turns out to be Larry’s future self.
    • An amusingly accidental example comes from way back in Kerfuffle #3, where it’s joked that Home MD can see the future. It’s less that he can see it and more that he simply remembers it.
    • Restored Sephiroth and the Grunk talking about the buzzing in the back of their heads is ominous to be sure, but it’s not until Kerfuffle #24 that we find out it’s the influence of Cobalt.
    • Crimson hijacks the Smashup in Kerfuffle #31, showing up where Larry usually would for the “hah! Nice.” The note Larry left for J0hn at the end of the episode, while vague, implies that Crimson possessed him.
  • Giant Space Flea from Nowhere: When Doctor Order tries to create her own timeline, something stops her, and while it's unclear exactly what it is, it refers to Chartreuse as its daughter, and sends Doctor Order back.
  • Girl's Night Out Episode: In CPU Kerfuffle 20 Twist, Chili's, and Hoedown team up for one fight in an event known simply as Girls Night. Girls Night occurs again during CPU Kerfuffle Gaiden 3 when the entirety of Loser's Bracket, with the exception of Sauceboss, was made up of women who love women.
  • Godhood Seeker: Doctor Order's ultimate goal: specifically, she wants to usurp the goddess of time, Chartreuse, by kidnapping her and absorbing her power. All of this is for Doctor Order to live up to what she believes to be her potential.
  • Godzilla Threshold: Implied to be the case with Sans. Iggy only resolves to "unleash him" when things seem at their most dire in Kerfuffle #19, much to Squid Jenny's shock.
  • Go-Karting with Bowser: Everyone is allowed to participate in tournaments and have friendly fighting matches, including people like Sephiroth from Sephiroth.
  • Good is Not Nice: Dantoinette is firmly on the side of the heroes, but she's also one of the rudest characters in the show.
Jay: She's a good person, right, like, in her broad strokes. But at the finer details of her? She's a fucking shitter.
  • Great Big Library of Everything: The CPU Kerfuffle files serve as this, even having information on time travelers from other timelines.
  • Handicapped Badass:
    • Cosmic Love is blind but able to fight like the others.
    • Cha Cha Slide is red/green colorblind although he's cured after three-stocking Discord Jack in Kerfuffle #25 and becoming Cha Cha Real Smooth. He does become blue/yellow colorblind as a result though.
  • Happily Married: Patch-Man and Sprout/Hoedown have been married throughout the whole series, with their relationship being a stable part of the story.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After his Mistaken Identity is cleared up and Therapuppy becomes his First Friend, P. Rool mellows out a lot and becomes a better person. He is still a Heel in the traditional wrestling sense, however.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: How Larry defeats Dr. Order: by launching her own soccer ball back at her.
  • Hostile Show Takeover: After rigging the championship match of Kerfuffle #18 in her favor, Doctor Order manages to subdue Iggy and assert herself as the new top dog of CPU Kerfuffle as a whole.
  • Humiliation Conga: Kerfuffle #24 confirms that Doctor Order suffered a nasty-yet-deserved one after the events of 20. After getting hurled thousands of years into the past in an alternate dimension by Chartreuse, she tried to establish herself as Kanduka, the goddess of time and order, to the locals, only managing to garner a small following. Her Sanity Slippage ended up overtaking her, and when she tried to get her counterpart of this timeline, Susan O'Rourke, to build her a time machine to retrieve her and bring her back to the Kerfuffle dimension, Susan actually ignored her, going to the Kerfuffle timeline herself and becoming horrified at what Order had done.
  • I Am the Noun: In Kerfuffle 20, when questioned why he's not equipping a Spirit for the match against Subzero Amalgamation and My Grunk, the Grunk simply shouts "I AM THE SPIRIT!"
  • I Have Many Names:
    • A single character has been referred to as Larry, the Florida Man, and Home MD.
    • NaClMore has gone through the most name changes in the series, going from The Gamer, to The Saltiest Gamer, to Pure NaCl, to NaClMore, and finally Perfect Saltman.
  • "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight: A number of characters try to pull this on Perfect Spriteman in order to revert him back to his original state. Unfortunately, Perfect Spriteman usually responds by giving them a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown.
  • Interface Screw: When Doctor Order uses Chartreuse’s power to mess with the timeline, she reverts the stream to the "starting soon" screen and begins to mess with it.
  • Ironic Name: Bing is represented by a character named Chrom, whose name is one letter off from Chrome, a web browser owned by Google, Bing's rival.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Dantoinette and P. Rool are both massive heels, but they also fight for the side of good and neither is a complete Jerkass.
  • Lovable Jock: Just about all of Team Clutch fill this role, being interested in exercise and self-improvement both of body and of character.
  • Lower-Deck Episode: Gaiden 3 is this, using characters that hadn't been seen in a while holding their own tournament away from the aftermath of Doctor Order's takeover and the subsequent rebellion.
  • Mad Scientist:
    • Doctor Order unethically experimented on and created several characters in the series while plotting to create the perfect fighter and ascend to godhood.
    • After Kerfuffle #20, Larry takes over Order's lab and becomes a (mostly) good version of this trope, doing science like "how many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop," as well as the odd resurrection every now and again.
  • Makes Just as Much Sense in Context: There are plenty of things in CPUK that are just plain bizarre, mainly due to the format the story is told in.
    • Hamburger Helper and Dadondorf are ex-husbands trying to give their relationship another shot after Hamburger Helper helped bring an evil hivemind into their dimension. They also have an adoptive son named Jimbo.
    • A character named Corn on the Cob, who is the corn gijinka daughter of a farmer named Patch-Man.
    • One of the most climactic moments of Kerfuffle #22 is when Komaeda, while seeking out other Universal Constants, comes across Sans Undertale and Kanye West and has to team up with Sans to defeat Kanye in the Sans fight hallway. And it wasn’t even a Sunday.
    • A somewhat major arc of Season 3 is the ongoing conflict between Jon Arbuckle and Garfield, the latter of whom is an eldritch entity.
    • Sephiroth is here. He just is.
  • Mathematician's Answer: Dr. Order's only response to Captain Quadratic's many questions about time travel is "Yes."
  • Minion with an F in Evil: Played With. Captain Quadratic is hopelessly in love with Dr. Order and acts as The Dragon to her, and he proves fairly effective at it, but he's not evil himself so much as wanting to please his "wife".
  • Monster Fangirl: Peppermint is utterly obsessed with Crimson, despite or perhaps especially after he possessed people and killed The Grunk.
  • Mood Whiplash: This tends to happen since there’s no telling what the fights will result in, so there’s often no telling which scenes will follow each other. A particularly distressing example comes from Kerfuffle #23, where after we almost see Restored Sephiroth kill Folk (only being stopped by J0hn at the last minute), we cut to a scene of Larry, at home, trying to figure out how many licks it takes to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop.
  • Morality Pet: Therapuppy becomes this for Plum K Rool, as her therapy sessions and friendship help him become a better person.
  • My Future Self and Me: Upon being revealed as Therapuppy’s future self, Folk gives her some advice (and some antacids).
    • Also, Home MD and Larry interact plenty throughout the series between fighting in Kerfuffle #3 and Larry helping Home after he emerged from the time machine in Kerfuffle #18. However, Larry does not find out that Home MD is his future self until Kerfuffle #19.
  • Mythology Gag: Several characters are jokes from Ryan’s other streams, such as Gamecube Controller and Vampire Catgirl Tifa.
  • Never My Fault: The Saltiest Gamer has this mindset. If he loses, it's because his teammates suck or his opponents were cheating.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: P. Rool gives a brutal one to Sephiroth after Folk is erased from existence, fighting him with a 8-level CPU level gap until Sephiroth is "turned into paste."
  • No Indoor Voice:
    • Captain Quadratic yells just about everything he says, to the point where even his text is in all caps.
    • Trainer of Justice is much the same, being loud enough on a consistent basis to have his text be in all caps whenever rendered in text.
  • Not Evil, Just Misunderstood: Plum K. Rool is not evil, but he did commit identity fraud on accident which led to people thinking his anger was unjustified.
  • Odd Friendship: Blond Sora, a tired teenager in charge of interdimensional travel paperwork, forms one with Captain Quadratic, a boisterous clone who was previously a villain, after Quadratic goes to Blora for help with finding Doctor Order and the two enter a tournament together.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: We never get to see how Iggy tames the Crimson, as it happens during the hiatus between Kerfuffle #9 and the reboot.
  • Only in It for the Money: Team Cash Money's stated purpose is entering tournaments for money, whether that be through prize money or through sponsorships. %Donald and Goofy get an honorable mention.%
  • Other Me Annoys Me: "Kanduka," or rather Susan, when faced with a letter in a time capsule from her alternate-dimension self Doctor Order, rightfully believes her to be an asshole. Once she learns the full extent of Order's actions, she's horrified.
  • Overly Long Gag:
    • The Swanky Kong bit in Kerfuffle #18 goes on for FAR too long, as none of the commentators can make themselves stop laughing from it.
    • Captain Quadratic has a habit of going on long spiels of complimenting Dr. Order once even reading off of a list, much to Dr. Order's annoyance.
  • Parental Favoritism: Doctor Order shows this to a staggering degree, with no clear favorites but having a clear punching bag in Google, who she encourages the contestants of Kerfuffle #19 to humiliate with the promise of a ride in her time machine if they do.
  • Politically Correct Villain: Most antagonistic characters (with the notable exception of Mozilla, the only homophobic character in CPUK) are this. Special mention goes to Big Yopper in his fight against Squid Jenny in Kerfuffle #2:
Big Yopper: Now, I support your decisions, but the purpose of the fight is to beat the shit out of you.
Ryan, narrating: Big Yopper is a heel, but he still says trans rights!
  • Pokémon Speak: Applies to Perfect Spriteman.
Hackerman J0hn: You... you bastard... you used to be just like me. What happened? Why did you abandon who you were?
    Perfect Spriteman: S... Sprite... Sprite...
    Hackerman J0hn: ...What the fuck?
  • Pop-Cultural Osmosis Failure:
    • Sans is here, however there is debate about what game he's from ranging from the wildly incorrect Undertale to the objectively correct Fire Emblem: The One With Google.
    • P Rool also apparently doesn't know what a Pokemon is.
  • Pre-Asskicking One-Liner: The Grunk's line "LET'S FUCKING GO!" before entering a boss fight with ICEE against My Grunk and Subzero Amalgamation
  • Ret-Gone: In Kerfuffle #20, after the timeline changes, Folk and Dantoinette begin to vanish. Chartreuse is able to bring them back, though.
  • Roar Before Beating: The Grunk is known for shouting before matches, and Plum K. Rool does the same after Folk dies right before turning Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VII Remake into paste.
  • Say My Name: The Grunk’s death at the end of Kerfuffle #9 is memorable for a number of reasons, one of which being Comona loudly crying “GRUUUNK!!!!” when they find his body.
  • Screw the Rules, I Make Them!:
    • The entire P. Rool arc runs on this concept, with Iggy shifting the rools to make it so Plum K. Rool couldn't win.
    • While Doctor Order is the champion, she twists the rules to give herself absolute power.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: In Kerfuffle 23, Blond Sora willingly forfeits the tournament in order to help Captain Quadratic, who recently had a breakdown over realizing Dr Order never actually cared about him. This marks the first, and so far only, forfeit in the series.
  • Shapeshifter Mode Lock: Larry experiences this when he has an unreleased spirit. This becomes important when he has to travel back in time and hold onto one for seven years in order to defeat Doctor Order, leaving him stuck as Home MD for that time.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!: Juniper simply responds to Naclemore's taunts with "You're weird."
  • Sibling Rivalry: Danthony and Dantoinette are siblings, and are known to beat the shit out of each other out of bracket.
  • Signature Move: There are a Lot of these. Valentine Punch, Alabaster Uppercut, Funny Punch, The Hamburger Helper, The Wedding Ring, etc.
  • Stable Time Loop: Larry creates one by traveling back 7 years and going to medical school to become Home MD and ultimately to revive The Grunk from the dead and defeat Doctor Order.
  • Suddenly Voiced: While CPUK had some dialogue before, it was rare or simply stated by one of the commentators. It’s become much more common recently, with full “cutscenes” and character moments. A special mention goes to the character introductions in Kerfuffle #17, which are fully voiced by Ryan and Holly.
  • Surveillance as the Plot Demands: The audience and commentators are partially omniscient, being able to see whatever is happening when something is happening.
  • There Is No Kill Like Overkill: During CPUK 20, Plum K. Rool turns Sephiroth into a fine paste because he refuses to stop beating him after he was stunned, had his spirit removed, and had his AI set to level 1. Plum even manifested a spirit to beat him harder.
  • Time Machine: Doctor Order builds one in season 2 as a way to catch Chartreuse, the goddess of time's, attention. It is used three times: once by Doctor Order to send Home MD into the future, once by Folk to travel back in time from a Bad Future, and once by Larry to travel back 7 years and create a Stable Time Loop.
  • Timey-Wimey Ball:
Captain Quadratic: WELL, YOU SEE, I’M CURIOUS ABOUT HOW THE TIME TRAVEL OF THIS WORKS. IS THIS BACK TO THE FUTURE RULES? IS THIS TERMINATOR RULES? IS IT, LIKE, IF I DO SOMETHING IN THE PAST, IT’LL AFFECT MY FUTURE? OR ARE WE IN A SECURE TIME LOOP WHERE EVERYTHING WILL HAPPEN AUTOMATICALLY? ARE WE SLAVES TO FATE?
    Doctor Order: ...Yes.
Captain Quadratic: ...WH-WHAT DO YOU MEAN “YES?” IS IT BACK TO THE FUTURE? IS IT THE FATE THING? IS IT LIKE A TIME TURNER HARRY POTTER?
    Doctor Order: Yes.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: After befriending Therapuppy, P. Rool becomes noticeably less of a Jerkass as she helps him manage his anger issues.
  • Tournament Arc: Despite the entire series being made of tournaments, we manage to get one of these in season 3 with the Grand Kerfuffle arc - a 64-person tourney that spans multiple episodes, with each episode focusing on 8 members of the bracket. Each of these sub-tourneys is given a color-based name (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple, White, and Prismatic) as the bracket was planned out by Prism.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Larry’s is Tootsie Pops, to the point where he will SD because he saw one off the side of the stage.
Brunette Roxas: Where did you get that?
    Larry: …Floor.
Brunette Roxas: You ate it off the floor?
    Larry: It was wrapped!
  • Transformation Name Announcement: Carrot Collective yells "12 Carrot Gold" when they activate 12 Carrot Gold.
  • Villainous Breakdown: After absorbing Chartreuse’s power, Doctor Order attempts to mess with time a little too hard, leaving her much more unhinged when she returns to the main timeline, and she steadily declines until her inevitable defeat.
  • Wham Episode:
    • Kerfuffle #19. Doctor Order's time machine is now fully functional, Folk (revealed to be Therapuppy from a bad future) travels back to stop her, and the episode ends with the championship bout getting frozen in time, as Chartreuse encourages all of the other fighters to gear up to stop her, leading to characters such as Dantoinette and P. Rool making their return. The episode ends with Iggy and Squid Jenny summoning Sans Undertale to the fray as well.
    • Kerfuffle #20, as the season 2 finale, as well. It turns out that the people stuck in the time bubble aren't really stuck, and Doctor Order is able to start absorbing Chartreuse's power almost as soon as the bubble drops. All of CPUK's best fighters are brought together to fight Doctor Order, but she still manages to gain near godlike power. She could only be defeated by Larry, who got sent back in time 7 years at the end of the episode, becoming Home MD.
    • Kerfuffle #31, the Orange sub-tourney of the Grand Kerfuffle. Among other things, Crimson is back at full power for much of the episode, Prism's power (at least one of her powers) gets revealed, Dantoinette learns that the Ciblings' parent Spectrum is dying, and the episode ends with Crimson trying to possess P. Rool and getting vaporized by Prism. However, the very last scene of the episode suggests he found a way to possess Larry, who can shapeshift, and the same scene reveals that Folk (and likely his timeline) is fading away.
  • Wham Line: The cutscene near the end of Kerfuffle #18 ends with one of these.
Ryan, narrating: The smoke clears, and we see that Home MD. is missing his left arm.
    • Another one for Kerfuffle #20:
Ryan, narrating: You hear Squid Jenny say, “alright, sending Larry back 7 years!”
Ryan, narrating: And we get a shot of a file laying on the ground in the file room, in the archives of the coliseum. A file for someone by the name of Lawrence Home, MD. Birthplace: Tampa, Florida.
    • We get one in Kerfuffle #31 when J0hn reads a note that Larry left for him.
Folk: What's wrong? Why are you freezing up?
      J0hn: ...The handwriting changed.
J0hn, reading: "Yes, J0hn, you can trust your lovely, lovely boyfriend Larry, right? -C."
      J0hn: ...Motherfucker.
  • White and Red and Eerie All Over: Doctor Order has a white and red color scheme that is emphasized in fanart.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: Ryan namedrops this trope in the match between Sephiroth and Geico Gecko, after Geico seemed to be scared and injured but managed to take Sephiroth out in round 2.

Tropes in the Non-Canon Curiosity Tournaments
  • All Just a Dream: Revealed at the end of NCCT1. The dream continues to be a framing device for the rest of the NCCTs.
  • Another Dimension: Made even more complicated than in CPUK proper, with the addition of the universe Cosmic Love is from (often referred to as the “Neraverse”) and the dimension Prism created for The Majestic Kerfuffle.
  • Audience Participation: Taken up to an eleven from CPUK proper, since the NCCTs were run over Discord. Starting with NCCT 2, the audience is able to interact with characters directly via a statue of Nelson the Hedgehog.
  • Dream Land: The NCCTs take place in a “shared dream” variety of this, created by Prism.
  • Ironic Last Words: When The End asked Nelson who they would want Ended first, they chose Winston Overwatch. Soon after, Winston picked up the Nelson to say something…
Winston: Excuse me for... dropping in. I simply wished to say hello and tell you how much I enjoy being alive.
  • Medium Awareness: Certain characters (notably Prism, Discord Jack, and Hackerman J0hn) are shown to have this to some extent, being able to perceive the text of the narration and dialogue.
  • Painting the Medium: Prism’s Rewriting Reality is indicated by it being italicized with a smiley face :). The archive takes this a step further by making her text colored white or rainbow.
  • Rewriting Reality: With the ability having been briefly showcased in Kerfuffle #33 when she changed the outcome of Google and Captain Quadratic’s fight, Prism is able to more literally rewrite dialogue and narration in the NCCTs.
  • Secret Art: “The Technique,” which Bing learns how to successfully do in NCCT4, allows him to slice open a portal between dimensions with his sword.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Mashed potatoes for Nelson.
