Hector's curse explanation in this story sheds some extra light on what happened in Coco, and explains why Miguel's journey was so unique in his world. Since his Idol stole his great-great grandfather's guitar, it's quite likely it was cursed as well. Hence why he got sent to the land of the dead in the original film!
