Fridge / I Dream of Jeannie

Go To

  • Fridge Horror: At times, Tony's behavior towards Jeannie can seem apathetic or mean-spirited. However bear in mind he is dealing with a genie- in other words, a being that can warp reality by simply thinking about it. While the genies overall are not shown to be as powerful as entities such as the Q from Star Trek, they are fairly close. They could be considered on par with beings that the SCP Foundation deals with on a daily basis. Genies do have a few rules that severely limit them- usually- namely that they often bind to a "master" which they have to obey and that they usually understand that excessive or grand-scale use of their powers could have severe consequences. They're controlled largely by their self-imposed rules. Jeannie usually has good intentions but being sealed away leaves her naive to how the modern world works, with much of the trouble she causes being because she's still thinking in terms of how her society from back then worked. On the other hand, the Blue Djinn was only beaten because his own naivety allowed Tony to outwit a being that could have easily killed him(and was trying to). Jeannie II is fairly uncontrolled and malicious with no master to bind her. Should any genie become sufficiently angry and choose to ignore their own rules, they could be extremely dangerous- Jeannie's own habit of occasionally throwing tantrums becomes a little scarier when realizing what she could do if provoked. Really, poor Tony is trying his best to keep Jeannie under control while also trying to live a normal life with a reality warper glued to his side. Which is doubly important because it's stated that Tony freed Jeannie after his rescue. Meaning she is under no obligation to follow his commands or wishes and keeping her happy is also the best way of keeping her from creating total chaos.
    • Yes, they do seem susceptible to physical injury(Jeannie was sent to a hospital with amnesia after being bumped by an opening door, and she did get drunk off moonshine at one point) but good luck trying to hurt a being that can literally blink you to the other side of the planet if you don't have the element of surprise.
    • Star Trek: The Next Generation's season 3 episode "The Survivors" features an entity that is easily on par with a genie, which wiped out an entire species because it became enraged. This comparison also highlights the fact that, for all their powers, they may actually be unable to simply undo the damage they cause when they lose control.
  • Genies are shown to be able to bring individuals from the past to the present. What happens if they aren't sent back properly, or worse, die while being time-shifted? It's a very risky thing to do, especially since genies do not have the ability to bring the dead back.
