The Doctor and Jamie decide that the beam that nearly hypnotized the latter must not really be intended as a Hypno Trinket because as Jamie says, "What would the Cybermen want with a hypnotising machine?" Except there's an obvious use Cybermen would have for a hypnotising machine: to make people compliant with cybernisation. The Cybus Cybermen in "Rise of the Cybermen"/"The Age of Steel" will later do exactly that.
