Empire State is a 2013 crime film starring Dwayne Johnson and Liam Hemsworth.

Based on a True Story, the film follows an armored car depot guard (played by Hemsworth) who conspires to rob his workplace, along with the attempts of law enforcement (led by The Rock) attempting to catch/stop him.

Provides examples of:

  • Based on a True Story: An interview with the actual Chris is played over the credits.
  • Caper Rationalization: Chris doesn't think anything of stealing to give his dead partner's family the life insurance insurance that his crooked bosses refused to pay out. Eddie on the other hand doesn't need a rationalization beyond his desire to have the money.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: It doesn't seem like anyone in the movie, including Chris, actually likes Eddie, and we don't see much reason why they should.
  • No Honor Among Thieves: Chris is about the only criminal character who doesn't screw over another criminal he's friends with or is otherwise supposed to be working with (unless you count his less-than-honest bosses at Empire, who are a different kind of criminal.)
  • Title Drop: "Empire State" is the name of the armored truck company, it's not just that the story takes place in New York.
  • With Friends Like These...: Eddie. More or less every bad thing that happens in the movie, from Chris not being able to become a cop, to the fiasco of the final robbery, is caused by Eddie being stupid , careless and self-centered.
