Fanfic / Mew Like Me

Go To

Mew Like Me is a Pokemon fanfic by Framented Disillusionment. It's about a Poke Maniac named Lane and his friends who run a club called the Trueobsessing about mythical Pokemon. Lane in particular has always obsessed with Mew, and even dresses like one. While venturing into a restricted area in order to investigate Mew's presence there, Lane comes face to face with Mew herself. However, things do not go as intended and Mew ends up transforming Lane into another of her kind and forcibly adopting him. Things only get more complicated, and weird, from there as Lane and friends are introduced to the weird world of legendary and mythical Pokemon...

It has a sequel called Myths Like Us, which takes place a number of decades after the first story.

Mew Like Me can be read here.

Tropes Relating to Mew Like Mew:

  • Abusive Parent: Korina is practically this. She is not the main character's parent by conventional means, as she effectively kidnaps Lane and turns him into a younger Mew against his will. From there, she forces him to play along with the whole "happy family thing" and let her 'parent' him, such as bathing and having him sleep curled up to her, threatening to erase his memories fully if he does not comply. She also forces him to survive in the jungle alone at one point to 'test' his powers as a Mew and see how he does, although it's implied she stayed hidden nearby to make sure he was safe. She even, more or less gaslighted him into believing he wanted to stay a mew,(although it's a bit ambiguous how much he wanted to at the time, but he does change his mind about wanting to return to being a human later.)
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Lane has shades of this. Lane is obsessed with Mew to the point of creating a Mew hoddie and wearing it all the time. He is ecstatic when finally meets Korina at first. However, he did not seem to intend on actually becoming a Mew. Although its played with later, as he grows more acquainted and okay with his Mew form as the story progresses.
  • Dying Race: The Mews were apparently a species that came from space a long time ago, and overtook the other major legendaries at some point in the past, including Pokemon like Dialga, Palkia, Groodno, Kyorge, and other such heavy hitters. Now, only Korina was left by the start of the story, hiding in a restarted area within a jungle where the Starfall is. This is actually a plot point in the story, as seeing Lane's obsession with Mew gives her the idea to transform Lane into one, sparking her interest in repopulating her species through the use of transforming others. in the ending, Lane takes up this mantle and begins using his club as a means to recruit willing individuals to become Mews, as seen in the sequel.
  • Forced Transformation: The premise of the story is built on this trope. Lane is forcibly transformed into a Mew, against his will. Later, his friends suffer a similar fate by Korina.
  • Gender Bender: Mythical Pokemon like Mew are akin to hermaphrodites, who have the ability to switch genders. The alpha of a colony apparently becomes male in some species. Lane does this throughout the course of the story, being turned female at first but temporarily becoming male again with the Gracidea Flower.
  • I Lied: Korina promises Lane and his friends that they can leave and she will turn Lane back into a human if they can pass a 'trial' of sorts she set up, such as navigating the territory, so long as its what Lane wants. After this 'trial' is done, she goes back on her word despite Lane insisting he wanted to become human again, proclaiming that she felt that was not what is heart really wanted (as she can read minds with her psychic powers) and instead keep him a Mew adn turned Lane's friends into pokemon as well, keeping them as her 'children' in her ship the Starfall.
  • Mama Bear: Downplayed with Korina, but still present. Though she makes threats to Lane to keep him/her in line and forces him into somewhat dangerous situations against wild Pokemon to test his abilities, she is implied to keep a close distance in case Lane needs help. She later turns Lane's friends into Pokemon too since they wanted to take away Lane, who she considers her kitten.
