The Terrible Surprise Episode

The first thing that stands out in this episode is a game that is only shown as an interstitial, and is not identified until the Montage at the end of the ep. It is Ganbare (Perservere) Neo Poke-kun, for the nigh-forgotten Neo Geo Pocket Color handheld.

It appears to be a game about a strange, vaguely buglike critter named Poke-kun, who plays games like a Breakout clone, a vertically scrolling shooter, and a game where he collects fruit while avoiding rocks falling from the sky. He lives in a crummy apartment, and bizarre little animations play in there, showing what happens outside of the games. He tries to work out, clean his floor, and is accosted by a series of invaders visitors, including a blond man in a tux that pats his crotch, an alligator, and a giant nose that is really in need of a trim.

That is what I was able to gather from this episode alone. If you're curious, then check out Hardcore Gaming 101 (a great website for any gamer) to learn more about the concept and how the game plays.

Timecode: 1.00: A somewhat infamous arcade game: Miss World '96 Nude. Why is it infamous? It's a puzzle game like Qix where you "draw out" parts of a picture to see what's underneath, and the only pictures in this game are of partially-naked-to-clothed women. If you look at the women too closely, you might get a bad feeling in your gut about this game and its agenda, because several of the women have grotesquely Photoshopped features.

In the actual game, you draw over the pictures with a too-happy happy face cursor, and try to avoid some pretty gross monsters. There is another wrinkle; if you go too fast or too slow, then a little Japanese girl's cartoony head appears onscreen, only to turn into a vampire. And then, all hell breaks loose: the nekkid woman that you were trying to uncover turns into something much harder to look at, up to and including demented-looking Pinhead clones, and a snarling monster head with smaller demon heads growing out of it. Yeah.

My first exposure to this game was when Electronic Gaming Monthly attempted to do a SFW version of Seanbaby's article of the 10 naughtiest games ever made. Miss World was originally number one, but another game actually placed above it that was so nasty, it couldn't actually be in the top ten. If you really want to learn more, then you can find the game under the Surprise Creepy page. Another website called "Bogleech" has a feature on the game's predecessor.

2:03: The original broadcast ad for Sweet Home, Capcom's fascinating artifact from the NES era, based on the horror movie of the same name. The ad also shows scenes from the movie. Given the rarity of the film itself, this must have been quite the find.

Sweet Home is available in emulation circles in its original Japanese form, and in its English-patched form. Keep in mind that, if you're going to emulate it, you should be sure that you're getting the English-patched ROM, unless you can read Japanese.

Reviews brought me to Sweet Home years after I heard about it in EGM, but spoiler-laden features do not do it justice. If you're going to play it at all, resist the urge to look it up online - even on TV Tropes.

6:15: Hot Pinball, a... pinball game with tables featuring nude pinups. The tables are so heavily airbrushed that the women look like dolls. Also features Engrish: "JUST A MOMENT... FANTASTIC SEXY GIRL WAIT FOR YOU AS YOUR LEVEL"

Hot Pinball was developed by Conrad, the same company that brought you... Miss World '96 Nude. OH SHI-

13: 55: Streaking! An old arcade maze game, where you play a streaker trying to outrun the cops. The graphics are too old and cartoony to show any real nudity. Developed by Shoei.

18: 17: The old, old Spider-Man PS 2 game developed by Treyarch, based on the first movie. Why did they show it? Probably because Treyarch went a little crazy with the alternate costumes. One code, "GIRLNEXTDOOR", let you play as Mary Jane in her Chinese dress, which (possibly unintentionally) created a scene of Screw Yourself at the end of the game, where MJ kisses Spidey. This code was removed in later pressings of the games, which may be Unfortunate Implications.

Aside from that, the graphics are laughably outdated, the animations flimsy, and the voiceovers phoned in.

Next: A game that you must never speak of.

That monster head? It's Freddy Krueger. Have fun with that. : D

Also, yeah - removing the code was pretty much a bad move on Treyarch's part... and yet many years later they're still dealing with controversy thanks to the Modern Warfare series, which they willingly put in the story.

Hypocrisy much?

Really?! I didn't know. I always thought it was just some random monster head that they put in there... then again, I never really watched those movies too closely.

There's also the torture sequence with the windows in Black Ops. I didn't hear anyone complain about that, unlike "No Russian".
