Chapter 3: Mob Murder

The title character is played by the lovely Linda Sterling, by the way. Please do comment if you're reading, it gets lonely here.

Chapter Three: Mob Murder

Recap has no new info.

Flashback to the fistfight in Hammond's office. All goes as before until moments before the explosive goes off. Evidently, this is a two-part vault, with an extra iron door for the stuff that needs extra security. The Black Whip closes that door, which muffles the explosion enough for her to survive.

The Black Whip pauses just long enough in the smoke-filled outer office to confirm Vic Gordon is still alive. (He probably didn't get a good look at her.) She leaves, and Vic soon follows suit.

In his private office, Hammond bangs on the door with his feet, attracting the attention of the town marshal. The marshal frees Hammond, and Vic's marched back into the office by several irate citizens.

Vic explains that he was after the thieves, but he was the only one seen running from the crime scene. And Hammond is only too happy to go along with this.

Vic mentions the phone call that lured him out of town. It turns out Ten-Point's last name is "Jackson." The banker suspects that call was just to set up an alibi. With Hammond non-commitally saying that he might have heard Vic's voice during the robbery, the marshal arrests Vic.

The next morning, Barbara Meredith shows up at the jail. She requests an interview with Vic, alone, to which the Marshal agrees. Vic could clear up matters by proving he's a government agent, but that would blow his cover. Barbara needs to find a way of proving his alibi.

Vic remembers that the Black Whip saved him from the ambush—he could back up the truth! Barbara agrees to try and contact the masked rider via her newspaper.

At the Herald office, Ten-Point puts what appears to be a whiskey bottle back on the shelf and reports to Barbara that there's a lynching party brewing down at the saloon. Barbara's all for putting a stop to this, but Ten-Point advises there are too many for a woman or feeble old man to deal with.

Barbara decides to ride out to where she lost the robbers' trail last night. If she can retrieve the money, the lynch mob will be demotivated. Ten-Point protests ineffectually.

Hammond talks to Saxon. They can't take chances on Vic Gordon coming to trial, him being innocent and all. So Hammond has had a "Wagner" bring in some rowdies to stir up that lynch mob.

Saxon would like to help, but is too well known. Hammond instructs him to leave town and lie low while Harris takes the stolen money to Capital City for safekeeping.

Barbara suits up as the Black Whip. Both she and Saxon ride out of town.

Wagner wears a black hat and black shirt as he stirs up the mob. Hammond gloats to his Clerk that this will surely finish Gordon. (Didn't work for Emperor Ming, won't work for Hammond.)

Somehow, the Black Whip has managed to spot Saxon and has trailed him to a barn. She uses her whip to sneak up to the hayloft.

Inside, Harris abandons his solitaire game when Saxon explains the plan. The money-filled saddlebags are concealed by a trapdoor underneath a hay bale.

It's at this point that the Black Whip attacks. There's some hand to hand, but the Black Whip is careful not to get in a position where her opponents' greater mass and strength could pin her. (Mind, it's only the fact that Saxon and Harris would never think of a woman being the Black Whip that prevents them from realizing who they're fighting.)

Harris accidentally knocks Saxon out with a shovel, allowing the Black Whip to get up on the roof. He apparently wings her with a shot, but it turns out she was just Playing Possum and rolling down the roof to gain access to her horse.

Harris loses precious moments getting to his own horse.

The lynch mob pounds on the jail door. The marshal insists that Vic must have a fair trial before being hanged. The marshal piles furniture against the door as Wagner's mob prepares to batter it down.

The Black Whip rides towards town, Harris in hot pursuit.

One of the mob throws a large rock through the jail window, knocking the marshal out. Shortly after, the door is bashed open and the mob rushes in.

Harris continues chasing the Black Whip.

The mob hustles Vic into the street. Hammond cleverly cements his "good citizen" reputation with a feeble attempt at Shaming the Mob.

The Black Whip is knocked off her horse by a low-hanging branch. Harris' shots are getting closer...when he finally gets the range, she'll be doomed!
