* SuperlativeDubbing: In surprising contrast to what happened to most of the series, XSEED's ''Oath'' release features a lot of ''really'' good voicework for the lead characters (though the extras, [[SoBadItsGood not so much]]). Elena and Chester in particular stand out - which is good, since their speaking roles are by far the largest.
** The English voice work in Ys Book 1 & 2 for the Turbo Grafx CD is widely considered to be one of the first examples of this in a Video game especially considering since it is from 1989. One of the reasons why is that Hudson managed to get known Animation voice talent such as JimCummings, Alan Oppenheimer, Dan Gilvezan and MichaelBell

your mileage may vary can not have examples, only their subtropes can.

* YourMileageMayVary: Mostly on the subject of ''Ys III''. Widely agreed to have the best music and one of the best plots in the series, it's nonetheless often overlooked due to being the ''sole'' sidescrolling entry in the series, a change fans hated so much that the series has never done it again. Up until the release of its vastly superior remake, ''Oath in Felghana'', which used the engine from ''Ark of Napishtim'', opinions were split down the middle as to whether the music and plot of ''III'' made up for the subpar gameplay.
** The truly hilarious clincher to all this is that ''Ys III'' is by far the most-released Ys game in the U.S. - it was released for all of the fourth-gen consoles in the early 90s and was essentially given the role of vanguarding the series' proper U.S. push. That ended about as well as could be expected. Then the PSP version of ''Oath'' got fast-tracked for a U.S. release, ahead of ''Chronicles'' and almost ahead of ''SEVEN''.

*** Even more painful was Feena and Reah sealing the Black Pearl in Toal's route. He's lying wounded and exhausted on the floor, begging them not to do it as they sacrifice their wings to stop Darm. This is made even more painful by the fact that it was implied that he'd found another way to stop the demons earlier but hadn't had the opportunity to explain his plan before the end.

* ClicheStorm: The plots of the various games often face accusations of this. When the series was new, they didn't have as much teeth (since the entire ''medium'' was still newish back then) but most people agree that it got a bit more true with ''Ys V'' and ''VI'', and the older games do suffer a bit now. As for ''Ys SEVEN'', [[spoiler:much like the gameplay is significantly changed up from previous installments, the story deliberately sets up an apparently cliche experience and then proceeds to turn player expectations completely on their ear on just about every front]].

Added DiffLines:

* DemonicSpiders: The enemies in the lower mines in ''I'', especially ''Eternal'', mainly due to their high speed and power coupled with the limited visibility, and the EliteMooks in the upper levels of Darm Tower, which quickly mow you down even if you have the [[InfinityPlusOneSword Infinity Plus 1 equipment]].
** Don't forget the literal spiders in Ys 6 right after the first boss. They do intense damage, swarm at you and stun you into infinity, and the only way to kill them easily is to do a drop attack, leaving you open to getting stunlocked from ones that the drop missed.
*** Bigger versions of those spiders appear later on. They are just as bad.
*** And the higher level versions of the wild boar-type enemies, who attack in packs, deliver massive damage [[RammingAlwaysWorks by ramming]], [[KnockBack knock you down]], and inflict InterfaceScrew StandardStatusEffects.
* EnsembleDarkhorse: Allegedly the reason Dogi went from a guy who busts Adol out of prison to Adol's best friend and travelling partner.

Added DiffLines:

* ShockingSwerve: [[spoiler:''Ys SEVEN'' pulls this off in spades once you reveal the real main villain of the piece... that is to say, '''''Tia'''''. All of a sudden, a lot of people you thought were enemies are now ''victims'', several people you counted as friends are now out to kill you, and even the characters can't believe [[MindScrew what]] [[HeroicBSOD just]] happened.]]

* SeinfeldIsUnfunny: [[http://www.1up.com/do/feature?cId=3133778&did=13 1UP called the original duology one of the most boring games of all time in 2004]]. It isn't hard to see why - it's an "action RPG" where you don't actually actively attack much of the time. Even by 1988 it was getting stale, and the next three games were all about essentially trying to find Ys' footing in a new world with lots of competition. These days, seeing what drew people in at all at first (I.E., the impressive-for-the-era graphics, amazing music and pretty nice customization) can be extremely difficult.

* {{Narm}}: Atlus's translation of the DS game renders the dungeon near the end of ''Ys II'' as the rather [[IncrediblyLamePun fishy-sounding]] Palace of Salmon. * TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot: In addition to breaking the difficulty of the game, Vageux Vadette in the DS version of Ys I missed a perfectly good chance to show the player what happened to Sara. Adol follows her in there and it would have been a great time to show us her fate. Instead, he finds nothing and returns to Minea where the plot picks up as if the whole sequence never happened.
