* UnintentionallyUnsympathic: Kayla can come off as this for some people, mainly due to her StarlightStealingSquad character. What also doesn't help is in her ''very first'' scene, she tricks someone into leaving her resume behind so that she can steal it and use it to get a job at the hotel.

* TheWoobie: Tom is still [[TheChewToy the victim of about 90% of the slapstick violence]] caused by everything around him. And unlike the cartoons, it's not limited to Jerry, [[BullyBulldog Spike]], and the other alley cats. Fortunately, the writing gives him equal footing with Jerry. For the most part.

* TheScrappy: Whatever you think of the other human characters of the movie, hardly anyone is fond of Preeta and Ben for being major a SpotlightStealingSquad that [[FlatCharacter lack of any interesting traits to make up for it]], despite the movie [[CharacterShilling constantly mentioning how awesome they are]]. Not helped by the third act being focused on fixing their SecondActBreakup over Tom and Jerry's antics or even Kayla's arc.

* UnintentionallyUnsympathetic: Kayla Forester tricking another job-hunter and takes her extensive resume for herself after being provoked by her was seen to be a rough start for her plotline. As someone supposedly relatable, however, she and the cat and mouse [[CharacterDevelopment all learn that their actions can have consequences]] [[spoiler:and earns a proper place at the hotel]] over the course of the film.

* AuthorsSavingThrow:
** The fact that Tom and Jerry do not talk in the movie, unlike [[WesternAnimation/TomAndJerryTheMovie the 1992 film]] which received negative criticism for having them talk almost the entire time, left the fanbase relieved.
** Many also were quite pleased that the movie didn't go the full CGI-route on the titular characters as feared that befell other adaptations, instead opting for a more stylized look that kept to the original design.

* WereStillRelevantDammit: A major criticism is the film’s few attempts to be hip. Examples include the film opening with a pigeon lip-syncing to [[Music/ATribeCalledQuest "Can I Kick It?"]], some use of modern slang (the British elephants saying “LOL” and “OMG”), and Tom [[VideoGame/{{Fortnite}} flossing]] in one scene.

In other words, the general consensus is it's not bad and animation buffs have cited it's better than the '92 movie ([[DamnedByFaintPraise not that that's saying much]]) as the story is at least built around Tom and Jerry's antics, with praise given for the models being true to the source, cameos of fellow characters from Tom and Jerry lore, and consistency of the animals being [[RogerRabbitEffect traditionally animated]] instead of being realistically [[AllCGICartoon computer-generated]]. Others, however, dislike her UnintentionallyUnsympathetic status (see below) and the fact that much of the focus and screentime is primarily devoted to her, essentially reducing [[JustHereForGodzilla Tom and Jerry]] to side characters in their own film. There's also the matter of Creator/ChloeGraceMoretz's performance, which is either seen as engaging or terrible. A third camp would see nothing necessarily wrong with her performance, but feel like it belonged in an entirely different film.

* ItsTheSameNowItSucks: Quite a few of the gags with Tom and Jerry are lifted directly from the original MGM cartoons, to the point where it can feel more like a ripoff than a homage.

** Ironically, Tom and Jerry themselves. Despite essentially being secondary characters, the scenes exclusively involving them fighting each other are widely hailed as the best parts of the movie for their [[SugarWiki/VisualEffectsOfAwesome well-done slapstick]].

* SpecialEffectFailure: As novel as it is that this movie actually shows us what happens inside a BigBallOfViolence, it’s somewhat sullied by the fact that while Tom, Jerry and Spike are running around faster than the speed of light, Creator/MichaelPena, who's on the other end of Spike's leash, is just being dragged slowly across the floor. Likewise, while the effort of making the characters animate like they do in the shorts is admirable, the interactions and integration of the animation and live-action elements can come off as incredibly poor in some scenes.

* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter: Tom and Jerry are the stars of the film, and Spike and Toots get some minor scenes to interact with them. Butch and his gang of cats, however, only appear at the beginning of the film and at the pound later on, never even stepping foot in the hotel. Their AdaptationalJerkass upgrade could have let them be minor antagonists, but they don't have any relevance to the main plot and only serve to bully Tom and Jerry for a bit.
* UncannyValley: While many were relieved that Tom and Jerry and the other animated characters in the movie would not be rendered in a realistic art style a la ''Film/AlvinAndTheChipmunks'', some found [[RogerRabbitEffect the juxtaposition of the CGI MGM-style toons with the live-action humans and environments]] odd-looking and wondered why the movie wasn't just fully animated (which, according to the film's long production, was originally going to be the case). This isn't helped by how the animators went a little too far in replicating the style and not giving the characters any [[SpecialEffectFailure proper two-tone shading on the models]], making them look rather cheap. Nor by how the classic 2D style is only used for the actual slapstick and exaggerated poses while the rest of the animation moves like most other CGI. Which looks incredibly out of place with the designs.

* UnintentionallyUnsympathetic: Kayla Forester is meant to be sympathetic for her desire to get a stable job, but it can be hard to root for her at the beginning when she tricks another job-hunter and takes her extensive resume for herself to get an undeserved job at the hotel. It's necessary to establish her as someone who is scheming and desperate enough to get involved with Tom and Jerry in the first place, and she [[CharacterDevelopment becomes a better person]] [[spoiler:and earns a proper place at the hotel]] over the course of the film, but it's understandably a rough start for her plotline.
* SugarWiki/VisualEffectsOfAwesome: Regardless of the UncannyValley entry above, the cel-shaded CGI animation is very fluid and expressive, and it captures the animation stylings of the classic cartoons very well.
* WereStillRelevantDammit: A major criticism is the film’s attempts to appear hip are seen as embarrassing. While the songs in the soundtrack are well-liked, their incorporation into the film itself felt very desperate: the film opens with pigeons rapping [[Music/ATribeCalledQuest "Can I Kick It?"]], most of the supporting voice cast are hip hop artists, heavy usage of modern slang (the elephants saying “LOL” and “OMG”), and Tom's use of [[VideoGame/{{Fortnite}} the Floss dance]] are all reviled. It should be noted that director Creator/TimStory got his start with directing rap and hip hop videos, which many assert is his primary motive behind the usage of these genres.
