* JerksAreWorseThanVillains: This version of Denethor, who has undergone AdaptationalJerkass as well, is far more hated than Sauron or Saruman, despite the latter two doing worse crimes. This is mostly because while one is not likely to come across dark lords in real life, there are tons of abusive parents and corrupt jerkass politicans that really do exist.

Misuse

* Misblamed: No, Frodo didn't send Sam away because he thought he was the one that ate all the Lembas. He turned him away because Sam offered to "share the load" and carry the Ring for a while after Gollum convinced Frodo that Sam might try taking the Ring. The fact that Frodo was also under the Ring's influence didn't help, either.

** With the revelation that Gothmog's likeness is based on that of Harvey Weinstein, his menacing attempts to kill Eowyn in the Extended Edition becomes even more disturbing in context.

* CatharsisFactor: It can be pretty satisfying to watch Gollum getting a stone thrown at his head and slashed with a sword courtesy of Sam, due to all the evil shit he did up to that point.

** Having Gandalf knock out a maddened Denethor, who was already forcing a desperate city into even more despair, gave many viewers gratification.

* CompleteMonster:
** The Dark Lord Sauron forged the One Ring in an attempt to conquer Middle-earth, powering it with his own maliciousness. Though slain, Sauron spent many years commanding his Orc armies to slay all in their path in his search for the Ring. With many cities fallen and many lives taken in his quest for power, Sauron's cruelty belies a paranoid warlord who seeks domination over everything.
** Saruman, having aligned with Sauron in his vain pursuit of power, commands Sauron's forces, the Uruk-hai, to acquire the Ring from the Fellowship. When the Uruk-hai attacks lead to the death of Boromir, Saruman has his men attack Rohan and Helm's Deep, even giving them the order to "Leave none alive!"

* EndingFatigue: Common complaint of the end of the movie. It doesn't help that the screen fades out in about five places and really looks as though the film is ending there, only for it to reappear again. Slightly different cinematography and editing may have made this a much less common complaint.

Added DiffLines:

* FanPreferredCutContent: Many feel this way about the death scenes for Saruman, Grima, and Gothmog in the extended edition as there's actual on-screen closure to these characters rather then them being glossed over and forgotten about in the theatrical cut.

* TheScrappy: Denethor, who is viewed in this movie as a complete crazy jerk instead of a complex, sympathetic, Shakespearean AntiVillain, gets a lot of hate due to his Jerkass behaviour.

* AwardSnub: The three films appearing in successive years saw it play with this trope.
** The first two films were beaten out for major awards by the likes of Film/Chicago, Film/ABeautifulMind and Film/ThePianist that were acclaimed but do not have the same long term influence on pop-culture and film making. It is widely believed that the voters viewed the trilogy as such an artistic peak of film craft that they collectively waited until the final instalment to hand out awards for non-technical categories to avoid giving Peter Jackson 9 awards (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay) in 3 years.
** Having waited to the 3rd film to hand out awards, this lead to the view that 2004 Best Picture Oscar and others from that year should have gone to Film/MasterAndCommander, costing Creator/PeterWeir a deserved & long sought after Oscar award before his effective retirement.
