* MemeticBadass: '''''Slipknot'''''. The promotional material has so heavily implied that he will be a SacrificialLamb that the fandom has gone the other way, treating him as everything from the strongest member of the Squad to the secret seventh member of the Film/JusticeLeague. Ironically, this isn't even the first time Slipknot has gotten this treatment. In the actual Suicide Squad comics, all Slipknot did was fail to strangle some alien robots and end up on the wrong end of Captain Boomerang's ChronicBackstabbingDisorder. Years later, though, some fans noted he'd first appeared tackling the incredibly powerful Firestorm with nothing but a rope, and declared him to be awesome.

** Jai Courtney generally has his fair share of detractors in any movie he's been in, but his performance as Captain Boomerang in the trailer has drawn something of a HeReallyCanAct response. It helps that he also gets some of the funnier moments, and isn't playing a WhiteMaleLead for once.

* FandomRivalry: A pretty big one with the Franchise/{{Arrowverse}}, mainly because this movie more than any other takes so many villains and characters off the table for the [=CW=] shows, [[spoiler: Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Katana, and Amanda Waller]] have all been either killed off or written out thanks to this movie and fans have not been happy. It also made sure that there was little chance of there ever being any new Suicide Squad episodes.

** The decision to cast Creator/WillSmith in an ensemble cast film, given his usual role as a MotorMouth ActionHero archetype. From the trailers he acts the exact same way as the typical Will Smith character, leading many to worry he will steal all the attention from the rest of the cast and turn the film into "Will Smith and the Squad". The fact he's listed first in the cast, and how he talks in every trailer hasn't helped the case.

* AuthorsSavingThrow:
** Judging from this movie's trailers, the film seems to be lighter in tone to ''Film/ManOfSteel'' and ''Film/BatmanVSupermanDawnOfJustice'', even if it is dark comedy. In particular, the posters regularly utilize an eye-catching neon pink and blue color scheme, possibly as a reaction to criticism of ''Man of Steel'''s [[RealIsBrown washed-out color scheme]].
** Ever since the divisive reaction to the Joker's tattooed appearance in the first trailer, every subsequent trailer has been careful to show him with a fully covered torso (wearing a vest, a tuxedo, a purple jacket, etc.), as if to assure fans that his tattoos won't be visible for the entire movie.
** The brief shot of [[spoiler: Harley Quinn aparently having been saved from drowning by Batman]] seems to address the complaint about this version of Batman supposedly killing people and also gives fans a glimpse of a more classical and moral Batman who turns criminals in.

* BrokenBase:
** DC's higher ups pulling ExecutiveMeddling on ''Series/{{Arrow}}'' over their usage of Deadshot, ComicBook/{{Katana}} and Harley Quinn which resulted in the characters being killed off, PutOnABus and written out of planned scripts respectively (presumably this is true with Captain Boomerang as well, though fans don't seem to mind as the show's Boomer was SoOkayItsAverage and not as interesting or true to the source material as the film's colorful [[LowerClassLout bogan]]). Either you don't watch it so it's OK, or you're annoyed that DC is interfering with a show that's doing extremely well.
** The Joker presence in the movie, primarily because he never has been part of the Squad in the comics. However, a notable amount of fans are excited for Jared Leto and his interpretation of the role, or are just interested in how it'll play out. As it turns out, Joker is not a member of the Squad in the film and will instead be in an antagonistic role.
** The Joker having tattoos. Some like them, some don't mind, and some think they ruin his look. The "Damaged" on his forehead is seen to be particularly too on-the-nose.
** The costumes for the female Squad members have proven divisive due to being more skimpy and significantly less practical than the male characters. Katana has the least split due to her costume for only having a bare midriff, but Harley Quinn and Enchantress wear very little. Harley's costume in particular has gained much controversy especially given her [[MsFanservice sex appeal]]. Some fans weren't too bothered by Harley's outfit since she has worn similar costumes and her movie outfit has been approved by her co-creators Bruce Timm and Paul Dini.
* CrazyAwesome: Whatever possessed the Joker to arrange dozens of knives, bottles, and other items in a sigil-like manner, and then lie on the floor laughing like a kook, [[http://cdn.collider.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/suicide-squad-trailer-image-57.png it makes for a striking image.]]
* CreepyAwesome: This version of Joker is possibly even more unsettling yet just as fascinating as his predecessors.
* EvilIsSexy:
** Harley Quinn as always. Being played by Creator/MargotRobbie definitely [[MsFanservice contributes more to the sexiness factor]].
** The Enchantress as well, though there's a definite element of FanDisservice.
** Even the freakin ''Joker'' of all people is getting this treatment. What really helps is that he is played by PrettyBoy Jared Leto and [[AdaptationalAttractiveness looks more attractive compared to previous incarnations]].
* FandomBerserkButton: In terms of reactions pre-release the fan theory about Jason Todd (the supposedly dead unnamed Robin in ''Batman v Superman'') being this movie's Joker instead of the actual Joker from the comics himself has become this. It started out as a particularly small fan theory that DC fans thought was interesting but no one really took it seriously. Then it [[HypeBacklash spread like wildfire amoungst people who aren't very familiar with the comics, and has become so popular and widespread]] that some people even think [[UpToEleven it's a fact that got leaked by someone working on the movie.]] Batman fans don't like the theory because they feel it ruins Jason's character, Jason's fans dislike it for the same reason, and Suicide Squad fans hate it because it would make this more of a Batman film than a Suicide Squad film. The theory has become so hated it has spawned a minor meme in which believers in the theory will have something [[DisproportionateRetribution comedically horrible]] happen to them the second they begin talking about it.
* HilariousInHindsight: Jai Courtney and the actor playing the ''Series/{{Arrow}}'' version of Captain Boomerang, Nick Tarabay, are both alumnae of the show ''Series/{{Spartacus}}''. Also, the announcement of Courtney's casting happened close to Tarabay's first major appearance on ''Arrow''.
* JustHereForGodzilla: A lot of people are interested in seeing how an anti-hero/villain-led comic book movie will turn out, along with what this means for the DCEU. Others just want to see a live-action version of Harley Quinn, or Leto's interpretation of the Joker, or both.
* MemeticMutation:
** "So that's it then. We're the patsies. We're some kind of [[TitleDrop Suicide Squad]]."
** Looks like Boomerang jumping out of a body bag and punching out the first guy he sees is becoming one too, same with him lifting his eyebrows in amusement.
** "{X} is Jason Todd!" as a way of mocking the absurdity of the aforementioned FandomBerserkButton.
** The use of the word "Vexing" has stepped up in popularity.
* MoralEventHorizon: If murdering Robin - a ''[[WouldHurtAChild minor]]'' - before the events of ''Film/BatmanVSupermanDawnOfJustice'' didn't make Joker enough of a monster already, his treatment of Dr. Harleen Quinzell removes any kind of sympathy to the character.
* NarmCharm:
** Joker's tattoos and wardrobe may be absurd, but that's The Joker for you.
** Many viewers love to playfully point out that many songs from the trailers were also in ''Film/WaynesWorld''.
** Harley's reactions from pouting when lectured by Rick Flagg to expressing excitement at the explosive carnage seem childish and silly in many gritty scenes. Then again, it does make her seem all the funnier and out of touch with the world.
* OneSceneWonder: Batman only gets about 10 minutes of screentime, but par the course with Batman, every second counts.
* ToughActToFollow:
** Like Creator/HeathLedger before him, Creator/JaredLeto has his work cut out for him to establish his own version of the Joker without being seen as too derivative of his predecessor. At the least, Leto has a Academy Award to his name before he got the part (for Best Supporting Actor, the same category where Ledger won posthumously for his Joker performance), so his ability to act isn't so much the question as much as the impact he can leave as the character.
** To a lesser extent, Creator/WillSmith as Deadshot, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang and Karen Fukuhara as Katana following after Michael Rowe, Nick Tarabay and Creator/RilaFukushima, respectively, in ''Series/{{Arrow}}''.
** Creator/MargotRobbie was fortunate enough to avert this in some respects, due to this being the first prominent Live-Action portrayal of the character (although Harley did feature in the short-lived ''Series/BirdsOfPrey'' television series and a cameo in ''Series/{{Arrow}}'') and receiving acclaim in her recent projects.
* WinBackTheCrowd: After concerns over ''Film/BatmanVSupermanDawnOfJustice'' being too dark and serious, many fans are looking forward to the movie's lighter, funnier tone.
* WinTheCrowd:
** Fans who were concerned that Warner Bros. would play it safe by churning out movies starring Superman, Batman, and the Justice League were pleasantly surprised to hear that this was the first project that they would release on after ''Film/BatmanVSupermanDawnOfJustice'' hits theaters. Many fans are also happy that they're trying to do something different with their shared universe.
** The announced cast has also been generally well-received in contrast to the casting of Batman, Wonder Woman, and Lex Luthor, which all proved immediately contentious among fans for various reasons. The casting of Viola Davis as Amanda Waller was particularly praised, even by detractors.
** The second trailer set to Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody." It managed to turn naysayers into fans and had a great effect on the more casual audience at large.
* WTHCastingAgency:
** Downplayed in one case. While most fans were good with the main cast when they were announced, a few were surprised that Will Smith landed the role of Deadshot due to the RaceLift involved. Furthermore, since initial buzz for the film centered on the actors approached while the characters were yet unknown, some expected he was going to play [[CaptainEthnic Black Manta]] or another black supervillain as opposed to a character who has appeared prominently on ''Arrow''. It should be noted that the role was met without controversy, unlike [[Film/FantasticFour2015 Michael B. Jordan being cast as the Human Torch]], but a bit of surprise from fans. Meanwhile, some are just unsure if he can pull off a villainous role that's so heavily against type.
** Largely averted with the rest of the cast, who have been more well-received as a whole than other casts hired for Film/DCExtendedUniverse productions.
