* ContestedSequel: To some, it's a mild improvement on ''Shrek The Third'' but still not a very good movie. To others, it's a huge improvement with an interesting plot, tons of ContinuityPorn and [[LoveToHate a great villain]], and indicative of Creator/DreamWorksAnimation's [[GrowingTheBeard beard-growing]]. While to others its worse than ''Shrek The Third'', completely abandoning the actual characters and a waste of time.

* UnintentionallySympathetic: While Shrek smashing his own kids' birthday cake and storming out of the party isn't exactly a good thing, he was going through ''tons'' of stress at the time, with everyone ''demanding'' things of him, the pigs having ate the first cake, and nobody letting him have a moment of rest. With these factors in mind, Shrek losing his temper is a lot more justified.
