* Narm: Episode 20 ("A Critical Moment for the Science Ninja Team") is infamously known in the fandom as "the puppy episode" and considered laughably bad, for the plot of Joe winding up with shrapnel in his head (after saving a puppy), which Dr. Nambu tries to remove- via spinning Joe around in a centrifuge.
** Joe's obsession with the cyborg girl Kathy in Gatchaman II is also regarded as rather silly, considering that he only knew her for about a day yet displayed an incredibly melodramatic reaction to her death that he hadn't previously shown for anyone else.

** Ken punching a young girl in the stomach in an early episode did not earn him too many favors in Western fandom. Neither did him slapping the same girl later in the episode, or him slapping Jun in episode 40. These can definitely be chalked up to different standards of the era and culture, though it can still be jarring to see.

*** [[spoiler:Note that said event will soon affect Joe towardsheroic sacrifice at the end of the first part series. At the edge of the trilogy.death, with just a week of life, Joe goes on a suicide mission to bring down Galactor once. He survives a horrific torture at the hands of Berg Katse and ends up, before dying, throwing his feather knife into the doomsday machine Berg is using to use to destroy the Earth, stopping it right when the countdown reaches his number "2".]]
**The ADV Films dub has ADV Films announcing AND releasing ALL 105 episodes also counts, given the fact that countless fans were fearful that the company would abort the project before it reached the final 20 episodes, which had never ever been decried by parts of the fanbase for its usage of slang and corny puns, some considering it to be a mockery of the seriousness of the original. One notable example is Joe saying that team work "makes for dream work". Or, from "Murder Music", there's both a BattleOfThePlanets reference and:
--->Berg Katse: Turn it up to 11! Kill them all!dubbed before.
** These events take up the entire first half of the episode, in the second half we are told that Joe is most likely going to die. He is saved in the last 5 minutes of the episode by bird missile shock-wave dislodging the shrapnel, rendering the over-dramatic first half of the episode entirely pointless.

* RealWomenNeverWearDresses: Many people think Jun is just a useless Chick and not as "strong" as modern heroines. Thing is, considering that the series was written in TheSeventies, Jun's character was actually revolutionary by that time's standards, and she and other girls like Cyborg 009 Francoise/003 and Sayaka Yumi were among the first Action Girls of oldschool anime, setting the precedent for many other more action-oriented ladies in anime/manga as a whole. Not to mention her Nakama treated her with respect and care (with the exception of Junpei, and he still didn't go that far) and they stuck by her side whenever she needed it.

* WallBanger: The damn centrifuge. Granted, Dr. Nambu probably figured that an operation would mean recovery time, meaning Joe out of commission and the God Phoenix unable to launch (it needs all 5 of their personal vehicles). But still, Nambu is repeatedly shown to be incredibly brilliant, so why couldn't he have come up with a better solution before resorting to that?
