* AuthorsSavingThrow: In the anime Ilulu is drawn to look somewhat older than she appears in the manga, to alleviate some of the {{Squick}} factor that comes from sexualizing such a young-looking character.

** Tohru states that the recognition inhibition spell was invented by a man named Emrys. She's most likely referring to Emrys Wledig, a 5th century Romano-British war leader who was the inspiration for [[Myth/KingArthur Merlin]].

* AndYouThoughtItWouldFail: Before airing, a lot of people wrote it off as one of Kyoto Animation's B-projects, especially because the {{yuri fan}}dom saw the series as an example of {{yuri|Genre}}, and Kyoto Animation is infamous for [[UpToEleven massively increasing]] LesYay but then [[BaitAndSwitchLesbians throwing it away]]. Then the first few episodes aired and surprised people with how funny and heartwarming it really was, and the series became so popular that it might be one of the most recognizable anime of the last years. Its success came to the point that ''Franchise/YuGiOh'' of all things would create a line of monster cards named [[https://yugioh.fandom.com/wiki/Dragonmaid Dragonmaid]] that was officially approved by Creator/CoolKyouShinsha himself, and later Kyoto Animation choose the series' second season as their great return project after the fire that damaged their studio in Summer 2019.

* TastesLikeDiabetes: Kanna in general often gets this reaction, since she's an adorable little girl with the majority of the show's cutesy moments coming from her.

* {{Narm}}: For Latin American viewers, the use of Japanese honorifics in the Spanish dub is seem by many non-hardcore fans as this, especially when Mexican media is well-known for normally avoiding this like a plague, outside offensive racial comedy. To make the situation even worse, some characters, like Lucoa, pronouce the honorifics as part of their names rather than being pronounced in a separated cluster (e.g Japanese "Tohru-kun" vs Latin American "Tohrukun"), and that without mentioning the fact other characters, like Kanna, somehow use the ''wrong'' ones in the dub.[[note]]Kanna address Tohru as "Tohru-san" in the Spanish dub, while in Japanese she address her as with the "-sama" honorific instead.[[/note]]

** Ilulu. Having to be forced to grow up after losing her parents and taken in by the more radical elements of the Chaos faction, she had to abandon the few human friends and attachments she had and believe her only purpose in life was to bring destruction. When Kobayashi repeatedly challenges this it causes Ilulu to break down and admit she doesn't want the life that was forced upon her and just wants to be a kid again.

* VanillaProtagonist:
** Compared to the dragons, there's not a lot to Kobayashi. However, this ends up being a possible InvokedTrope since the series is all about the extraordinary meeting the ordinary.
** In a meta sense, this is a lot more downplayed as Kobayashi is rather unusual for a female protagonist: she's slightly older than the average, stoic, work-focused, almost always seen wearing sober, mostly unisex outfits (she rarely wears skirts and often wears a tie), has a taste for beer and maids and is a big DeadpanSnarker. Had Kobayashi been a male character, she and Tohru would be one among the many anime examples of SavvyGuyEnergeticGirl. Being female though, she does make anime viewers give her a second look, even if in the anime itself her normality has a point of working as a foil to the other more fantastic characters.

* CrossoverShip: For whatever reason, certain fans on 4chan have taken to shipping Elma with Jack from Manga/BakiTheGrappler. Presumably, it's because of Elma actually being a badass dragon who could take Jack in a fight.

** It'll be Uzaki all over again. [[labelnote:Explanation]]Once it was confirmed that Ilulu would be in the second season, quite a few fans began to dread (or look forward to) the inevitable complaints about [[GagBoobs her character design]] on social media, comparing it to [[OvershadowedByControversy what happened]] when ''Manga/UzakiChanWantsToHangOut'' aired.[[/labelnote]]

* {{Fanon}}: Fafnir being a fan of ''VideoGame/DarkSouls''. It's never stated in the actual series just what game he's playing in certain scenes, but in the anime, Fafnir became interested in video games due to Takiya playing a blatant expy of Dark Souls during his introduction. Try finding a fan work that doesn't have him referencing the ''Souls'' games at least once.

But since ''Metsuko'' ended almost seven years before the episode aired and was never officially translated into English, most viewers would have no way of knowing who she was ahead of time.

* WhatDoYouMeanItsNotForKids: Despite the cute artwork and SliceOfLife setting, the series is actually {{Seinen}} and has quite a bit of {{Fanservice}} (especially from [[ShamelessFanserviceGirl Lucoa]], who's also portrayed as a ComedicShotacon). Creator/SevenSeasEntertainment rated their translation of the first volume of the manga as an all-ages title despite all the fanservice and other content present even in the first volume, and their translation didn't censor any of it, either. This is fixed in the later volumes with a more appropriate Teen rating, and later printings of the first volume are also rated Teen. While the anime is TamerAndChaster than the manga and focuses more on the found family theme, it still has some fanservice.

** Kanna is basically the living embodiment of huggable adorableness, being a sweet and precious dragon-child with heavy TheWoobie qualities that inspires a strong desire to cuddle her and give her the attention she craves.

** Kanna is easily the most adorable character in the series, and she's even more adorable in the anime.
** Tohru is also ''very'' adorable and huggable (especially when she was a baby dragon).
** Elma is as well, in an {{Adorkable}} sort of way.

* HarsherInHindsight: In a chapter of the manga and episode of the anime, Kobayashi catches a cold. It's played fairly humourously as Tohru tries to figure out what to do for a cold, but as the day wears on she thinks more and more about plagues from her world and their effects. Now imagine how she'd react to the pandemic ... and also remember they're physically closer to where it originated.

** Ravioli Ravioli, don't lewd the dragon loli. [[labelnote:Explanation]]A modified WesternAnimation/{{Spongebob|Squarepants}} meme used whenever there are implications of perverted things being done by or towards Kanna.[[/labelnote]]

** "Maid with Dragons❤︎", the ED for season 2, sounds just like ""Bon Appétit♡S", the opening theme for ''Manga/BlendS''.
