** ''League'' events are often guilty of ArcWelding and using the InvincibleVillain trope, both of which were beloved during ''Burning Tides'' and ''Shadow and Fortune''-- each of which people felt integrated the game's lore seamlessly into the stories they were telling and combined different characters and arcs, said InvincibleVillain being respectively Miss Fortune, an AntiVillain at worst whose planning out ''Burning Tides'' is generally agreed to be a wonderful twist that has huge consequences on the long-running story, and Thresh-- one of the most popular villains in ''League of Legends'' who, while surviving without much of a scratch, also takes his fair share of losses. Both were also confined to Bilgewater, with fairly limited casts. ''None'' of these factors applied to ''Rise of the Sentinels'', which seemingly picked who became a Sentinel or a Ruined champion at random (With accusations of being MerchandiseDriven), never paying enough attention to ''any'' of its characters due to its enormous scope, and which requires contrivances, TheWorfEffect, and out-of-character heroes to achieve Viego's NearVillainVictory, only for it to be reversed in the last moment and ultimately turn out inconsequential. Suffice it to say that while ''Burning Tides'' and ''Shadow and Fortune'' are still well-received, ''Rise of the Sentinels'' brought these issues to people's attention.

* ArchivePanic: The ''League of Legends'' wiki lists ''257'' short stories ''alone''; between the short stories, comics, ''VideoGame/LegendsOfRuneterra'', ''WesternAnimation/{{Arcane}}'', the seasonal cinematics, the ''WebAnimation/TalesOfRuneterra'' shorts, ''Literature/GarenFirstShield'' and ''Literature/{{Ruination}}'', and of course, the game itself, there's a positively ''overwhelming'' amount of content-- much of which contributes to plotlines that are [[ArcFatigue as of yet unresolved]]. It can be hard to get into ''League of Legends'' when there's an absolute mountain of content to get through due to the over-160 champions in ''League'', almost all of which have ''some'' lore, and some of whom have a ''lot''.

Rewritten per this TRS thread: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=14860997890A40152400&page=115#2869. Since Lux does not have a "canon" love interest Fan Preferred Couple only applies to the Star Guardian world.

** Jarvan IV/Shyvana is a very popular couple in the fanbase, despite certain Riot staff stating a preference for J4/Quinn. The ''Lux'' comic runs with this, with Jarvan IV being very reluctant to marry anyone due to already being in love. He later states this someone is not so different from Sylas in terms of magical ability, which rules out this someone being anyone but Shyvana (since most Demacians have to hide their magic or risk exile or death).

Starting around the point of the first Star Guardian event, Jinx/Lux (a.k.a. "Lightcannon") has taken off in popularity due their established bond in that universe. Continuing even further past the releases of ''Wild Rift'' (where they interact again) and ''WesternAnimation/{{Arcane}}'' (which builds on Jinx's backstory), a lot of fic writers have grown attached to their dynamic. Many argue that Lux/Ezreal lacks as compelling a dynamic or stable a foundation as other canon couples, while Lux/Jinx has more parallels that can be drawn between the girls (both being younger sisters to older champs, both having deeply rooted trauma from their nations' oppressive environments, channeling their inner selves through their abilities, etc.). Just for comparison, Lux/Jinx has about ''five times'' the number of works associated with it on Archive of Our Own than Lux/Ezreal.

Fixing the Evil Is Sexy section, which is riddled with Zero Context Examples. Also, as of her VGU, mainline Morgana is firmly an Anti Hero and therefore doesn't count here.

* EvilIsSexy: Evelynn, Katarina, and Morgana are prime female examples, with Jhin and Kayn being the most prominent male examples. Though it's [[AlternativeCharacterInterpretation debatable]] if Morgana's [[AmbiguouslyEvil actually evil]] however, ditto with Katarina due to Noxus' DarkIsNotEvil status.
** Renata Glasc is a ruthless, confident, and endlessly pragmatic businesswoman, and someone that players lost their minds for when she released due to her design. It helps that she's a rare case of an older woman in ''League'', something that not many of the existing champs venture into.

* EvilIsCool: ''League'' has plenty of evil factions and characters, and it's unsurprising that, considering the WorldOfBadass it's set in, many of them radiate awesome.

** The Shadow Isles produce a number of undead monstrosities such as the sadistic TortureTechnician and manipulator Thresh, the imposing yet cunning EvilOverlord Mordekaiser, the warlike centaur Hecarim, and Viego, a man who nearly pushed Runeterra to its knees in his quest to revive his dead wife.
** The Void produces a number of terrifying EldritchAbomination characters that are nonetheless quite fleshed out, from the inquisitive and disturbing Vel'Koz, the perpetually hungry Cho'Gath and Kog'Maw to the menacing [[ALighterShadeOfBlack yet overall less evil]] Bel'Veth. The Void's influence also created [[EvilSorcerer Malzahar]].
** Shurima produces villainous badasses like the maddened Crocodile demigod Renekton and the incredibly powerful Magus Xerath, each of which has a tragic backstory and an archenemy and the willpower to last centuries.
** Even a good faction like Demacia has evil badasses like the Mageseeker Order, a ruthless organization that nonetheless gets the job done and has awesome outfits, and of course Sylas, a WellIntentionedExtremist who seeks to bring the whole kingdom crashing down as revenge for his and his fellow mages' torment at Demacian hands.
** Ionia may be overall "good," but it still produces champions like the flamboyant SerialKiller Jhin and the shadow-lurking assassin Zed.

Though it's [[AlternativeCharacterInterpretation debatable]] if Morgana's [[AmbiguouslyEvil actually evil]] however, ditto with little wonder many of them are evil.
** Evelynn is a succubus who weaponizes her attractiveness to lure men into her clutches and wears nothing but black mist around her body.
**
Katarina due to Noxus' DarkIsNotEvil status.
** Renata Glasc
is a ruthless, confident, scantily-clad assassin from Noxus who balances her ruthlessness with a gorgeous appearance, her scarred face detracting nothing.
** [=LeBlanc=], head of the Black Rose conspiracy, is evil to the core but also heavily made-up in a gothic style, attractive,

** The ''Rise of the Sentinels'' event's clunky writing mixed with a feeling that the Sentinels were UnintentionallyUnsympathetic left many fans wondering why Viego reviving Isolde was a ''bad'' thing-- while he's a world-conquering destroyer, his [[LoveMakesYouEvil seemingly genuine love for Isolde]] and repeated arguments that he would stop his conquests if the Sentinels just let him

This was pre-emptively cut off in later retellings of the story by making it clear Viego was [[DomesticAbuse a terrible husband]] whose "love" of Isolde is clearly [[LovingAShadow objectification]].

** Noxus is isolated from their typical wars with Demacia and left with its two factions plotting against one another, a plot that has not made progress of any sort with the ultimate goals of Swain and [=LeBlanc=] still completely unrevealed to the audience, with the entire Black Rose plotline pushed on the backburner while simultaneously being the only major story event going on in Noxus at any given time other than Darius' fairly nondescript conquests.
** The Ruination plotline is a lengthy and complicated event, with plot points spread out and one of the messiest continuities in the otherwise mostly coherent ''League'' canon (Riot's official stance is SchrodingersCanon). It primarily focuses on the Sentinels, a group of [[RememberTheNewGuy secretive heroes who've never been seen before]] and Viego, the Ruined King, who quickly became a BaseBreakingCharacter. By the time Viego's conquest had ended, the plotline had taken up a massive amount of time and left relatively little impact on the world, with [[StatusQuoIsGod Viego bound once again in Camavor and the world essentially reverting to normal]] after Viego was defeated by Senna, leaving it a long arc that ultimately accomplished little. Of note is that it also has a ''large'' number of related media (Some of which are just adaptations) by the lore's standards, including ''Rise of the Sentinels'', multiple cinematics, a ''VideoGame/LegendsOfRuneterra'' retelling, the ''Steadfast Heart'' comic, ''VideoGame/RuinedKing'', and the novel ''Ruination'', meaning it sticks around in the lore even after its original plotline finished.

* AuthorsSavingThrow:
** Jayce's original lore drew such an outraged outcry from the fanbase (especially fans of Viktor, who was made to look like not only a weakling, but the worst kind of hypocrite) that Riot rushed out a new lore as soon as they could that didn't make Viktor look so bad.
** Xerath's lore after Shurima update drew an outrage that he's reduced to a generic backstabbing CardCarryingVillain, as it was seen from Azir's POV. Eventually, Riot released a series of short stories, one of them from Xerath's POV, and now he's shed that CardCarryingVillain image, and the fandom rejoiced.
** While ''The Burning Tides'' is overall awesome, some fans feel rather justifiably unnerved with the change of Miss Fortune into a vengeance-filled woman who looked like she'll give no shit to anything if it means getting to kill Gangplank and erase his existence. ''Shadow and Fortune'' could serve as such saving throw, depicting Miss Fortune as someone who truly cared for her crews, have more than vengeance in about getting rid of Gangplank (wanting to make Bilgewater strong on its own without latching on Gangplank's authority) and starting to question if it's really worth throwing Bilgewater to chaos and destruction for her vengeance when the Harrowing came...
** After the [[https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-J9NPVR-1Ug4/VwRukcn588I/AAAAAAAA5iE/lnfrsT49WOwtDZ6_WqKbp1t5kUlC2qSNA/s1600/slim.jpg SKT T1 skins to commemorate the team's 2015 World Championship victory were initially announced]], many fans were disappointed by the low-quality designs, the lack of inspiration from the players themselves (similar to how SSW Twitch and Thresh got custom recalls inspired by SSW Imp and Mata), lack of representation of Easyhoon, a major SKT sub, [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking and giving Ryze yet]] ''[[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking another]]'' [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking skin.]] At first, [[https://www.reddit.com/r/leagueoflegends/comments/4djtby/riot_kateykhaos_response_to_skt_skins_being_all/d1rrt19 Riot attempted to defend themselves]], but [[http://boards.pbe.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/general-pbe-feedback/Miavcl5e-so-about-those-skt-skins they soon officially apologized and decided to delay the skins in order to improve them, and even produce an extra Azir skin to represent Easyhoon.]] And by god, did they deliver, [[http://www.surrenderat20.net/2016/07/725-pbe-update.html#newskins updating their aesthetics to properly represent the team]] [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWc_TFWq91g as well as giving them unique recall animations directly inspired by the players themselves.]]
** Similarly, in December of 2015, Riot produced an Ahri short story to coincide with sales of a PVC statue of her. The poor quality of the design and anatomy (her neck was ridiculously long and her face was nearly hideous to look at) caused an almost-immediate backlash. Riot quickly cancelled the sales, saying they would try to improve the quality of the statues.
** After the highly-contentious introduction of [[ScrappyMechanic Dynamic Queue]] in Season 6 (see [[BrokenBase/LeagueOfLegends the Broken Base page]] for more), [[https://euw.leagueoflegends.com/en/news/game-updates/competitive/riot-pls-ranked-pls Riot announced that after Season 2016, Solo/Duo Queue will return]], considering Dynamic Queue a misstep in their direction.
** Within a span of a week nearing the end of Season 6, Riot made announcements that 2 of the most-requested features would be finally implemented in the game: Replays coming during the pre-season (which has been in on-and-off DevelopmentHell for years now), and even more shockingly, a sandbox-esque Practice Tool confirmed to be coming out in the near future. The latter is especially surprising, given Riot's previous stance on the subject, making them seem like doing a complete 180 (Even [[http://euw.leagueoflegends.com/en/news/game-updates/features/road-pre-season-practice-tool-works the first line of the announcement was]] "Wait, what?"), but not unwelcome by fans in the slightest.
** In 2018, the game's much-hyped and highly anticipated Clash tournament mode was hit with all sorts of brutal [[GameBreakingBug game-breaking bugs]] at launch that forced Riot to cancel it at the last minute. They were, however, very quick to make up for this by instead enabling ARURF for the weekend, [[https://euw.leagueoflegends.com/en/news/riot-games/announcements/whats-next-clash offering refunds to those who had earned Clash tickets]] (something Riot ''very'' rarely does), as well as bonus loot for their troubles as they continued working for a better launch at a later date.
** Pantheon's first post-ContinuityReboot lore was controversial for the decision to introduce the ideas of [[PhysicalGod Aspects]] [[SharingABody cohabiting]] [[EmpoweredBadassNormal mortal vessels]], but then had The Aspect of War in particular [[DeathOfPersonality obliterate the mortal Atreus' original personality]], which fans interpreted as [[TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter a waste of a character]] [[TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot with a compelling backstory]] [[ShootTheShaggyDog that was rendered moot]]. With his 2019 relaunch, Riot took the opportunity to flip the entire dynamic in Atreus' favor -- rather than being anticlimactically snuffed out by a nondescript Aspect, it was ''the Aspect'' that bit the dust [[{{Determinator}} as Atreus proved himself to be even stronger]] and ascending to divinity, a plot which was far more universally loved.
** Also from Targon, the 2016 reboots of Leona and Diana's lores were criticized for removing the fact [[WeUsedToBeFriends the two were friends-turned-enemies]] in favor of highlighting them being [[DeityOfHumanOrigin divinely chosen as Aspects]], a decision which many (especially [[DieForOurShip shippers]]) argued took away much of the interpersonal punch of their rivalry, boiling it down to a mundane SolarAndLunar conflict. Their 2020 rewrites[[note]]Which were mainly done to remove excess, now-undone lore, including Leona's relationship to Atreus/Pantheon due to the above change[[/note]] decided to add their longstanding friendship back into their lore, making it a bigger dynamic of conflict between them again, and shippers rejoiced.
** While the ''Lux'' comic miniseries was generally well-received, one prominent criticism was the somewhat [[AntiClimax anticlimactic ending]] where despite [[WhamEpisode changes]] like the death of Jarvan III and Garen's acceptance of Lux's magehood, the already-established status quo of Sylas being an enemy leading a mage rebellion against Demacia [[StatusQuoIsGod was left intact.]] Concerns were quelled with "The Shackles of Belief", showing Sylas making new allies from ''The Freljord'' and thus introducing much potential conflict between the two, formerly pretty non-interacting factions.
** Seraphine's lore on initial reveal triggered a massive backlash as it gave off the impression that she was aware of the souls of Skarner's ancestors trapped inside of the crystals, but continued to use them anyway, a trait that made her seem [[UnintentionallyUnsympathetic majorly unsympathetic.]] By the time she was properly released, [[https://twitter.com/JeevunSidhu/status/1321936795597066241 Riot definitively stated that this interpretation was not what they intended]] -- she was supposed to be just as ignorant as everyone who utilizes the crystals are -- and her lore was tweaked and a few lines of unflattering dialogue highlighting this aspect (which were [[https://twitter.com/JeevunSidhu/status/1321939928255623168 reportedly]] DummiedOut early draft recordings) were removed.
** After the negative reception to the ''Rise of the Sentinels'' event, which was meant to be part of the greater Ruination event of 2021, while Riot staff initially claimed the event was canon, [[CanonDiscontinuity they later decided to scrap the whole idea and claimed that the event was not canon]], only suggesting that some version of it happened in BroadStrokes but not as the visual novel associated with the event portrayed it, jettisoning the out-of-character and comedic portrayals of the Sentinels and Ruined champions in question.
*** ''VideoGame/RuinedKing'' -- orignally meant as a preamble to the whole event until development complications ended up shunting it to way after it -- ended up leaving fans on a higher note regarding the whole Ruined King Saga, presenting a much different, but well-received approach to the fight against Viego, with [[TruerToTheText more faithful]] and engaging [[CharacterDevelopment character-advancing]] lore. [[spoiler:The game also concludes with [[TheEndingChangesEverything a radically different ending than expected]] where [[NotHisSled the new team successfully defeat Viego and stop the Ruination right then and there]] -- with ''Ruined King'' [[https://twitter.com/RiotL4T3NCY/status/1460656443065974784 being considered canon]], a lot of people interpreted this as Riot and Airship Syndicate [[CanonDiscontinuity presenting a means to further ignore the]] ''[[CanonDiscontinuity Sentinels]]'' [[CanonDiscontinuity event]].]]
** People were not too pleased with Unbound Thresh during the ''Rise of the Sentinels'' event, due to turning Thresh into another PrettyBoy champion, having it be his only look in ''Wild Rift'' and having little explanation in the event itself. A lot of this changed when Riot released the "Thresh Unbound: A Night At The Inn" cinematic, showing him [[AFormYouAreComfortableWith making conscious use of his pleasing appearance]] to expand on [[ManipulativeBastard a dastardly, manipulative side of his character]] that was sorely missed from ''Rise of the Sentinels''. The high-fidelity animation also helped illustrate that the face itself is much closer to that of [[EvilOldFolks an aging elder]] rather than [[OlderThanTheyLook the almost youthful depiction seen in his splash art and in-game models at the time]], which at least makes more sense for Thresh's backstory. While the entire concept of making Thresh more human-like remains a contentious one, [[WinBackTheCrowd audiences at the very least considered this an improvement]], and Riot further made changes to Unbound Thresh's assets to make him look more wrinkled, aged, and more in line with his appearance in the short.
** For those who were disappointed of Atreus/Pantheon getting [[TheWorfEffect worfed]] during the ''Rise of Sentinels'', Riot manages to at least turn it around with the short story ''In Battle, Broken'', where it shows what exactly happens to Atreus post-event: [[BreakTheBadass He's broken]] and [[DespairEventHorizon hit rock bottom]] to the point of being rejected by his close friend for giving up, surprisingly making him a lot more human and relatable than he was before. Not content with this, Riot made Atreus/Pantheon feature heavily in [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDYqT0_9VR4 Season 2022 Cinematic, The Call]] where despite hitting rock bottom as before, he's still shown to be re-climbing Mt. Targon, fought the Solari without his spear, fought Sun Aspect!Leona without his celestial powers and holding still, and after getting knocked down from the cliff by a mysterious comet, [[HesBack he gets back up with new determination and regaining his celestial powers to jump straight at the sky, representing "Those who will rise again" of the song lyrics.]] Many naysayers of the ''Rise of Sentinels'' and fans of Pantheon come to admit that the event improves Pantheon's characterization instead of irreversibly humiliating him and agree to not count his time under Viego's thrall as FanonDiscontinuity, he's ''still'' the [[FanNickname Mantheon]] everyone admired.
** The HomoeroticSubtext between Graves and Twisted Fate was the subject of controversy for a few years after a former Riot writer called out the company for repeatedly playing up the ''idea'' of them being a gay couple, [[BaitAndSwitchLesbians but refusing to walk the walk]], [[ExecutiveMeddling having previously vetoed the originally-proposed idea of the two being married]]. Riot sought to rectify a great deal of this in 2022, not only making the two their unofficial mascots of the year's Pride Month (providing much more artwork of them ''greatly'' heightening them being gay lovers), but releasing the story "The Boys and the Bombolini", which explicitly describes them as gay (confirming that Graves had been gay "for the better part of four decades") and in a full-blown romantic partnership. It also briefly addresses the case of PlatonicWritingRomanticReading regarding Graves and Vayne from the ''Rise of the Sentinels'' event (stoking concerns that Riot was trying to [[HideYourLesbians wedge apart Graves and TF's implicitly gay relationship for an explicit heterosexual one]]), with Graves confirming that he saw her as a respectable (and terrifying) ''friend'', [[MistakenForRomance nothing more]].

** Seraphine's default outfit caught a lot of controversy upon reveal, with the biggest criticism being that her bright, IdolSinger-influenced design didn't fit the style of ''League'' and is more like a [[MagicalGirlAU Star Guardian]] outfit than something that would fit in base Runeterra. [[OlderThanTheyThink While modern-skewing aesthetics have previously found their way into the game's canon, especially in Piltover and Zaun]] (''VideoGame/LegendsOfRuneterra'' has the [[https://leagueoflegends.fandom.com/wiki/Chempunk_Shredder_(Legends_of_Runeterra) Chempunk Shredder]], a full-blown rockstar), Seraphine's {{kawaiiko}}-inspired aesthetic combined with her bright pink colored hair doesn't quite gel with the ArtDeco and SteamPunk stylings Piltover is known for, making her stick out like a sore thumb to many. [[OlderThanTheyThink While modern-skewing aesthetics have previously found their way into the game's canon, especially in Piltover and Zaun]] (''VideoGame/LegendsOfRuneterra'' has the [[https://leagueoflegends.fandom.com/wiki/Chempunk_Shredder_(Legends_of_Runeterra) Chempunk Shredder]], a full-blown rockstar), Seraphine's {{kawaiiko}}-inspired aesthetic combined with her bright pink colored hair doesn't quite gel with the ArtDeco and SteamPunk stylings Piltover is known for, making her stick out like a sore thumb thumb, perhaps not even in a verisimilitudinous way (where even if she's ''supposed'' to many. be flashy in-universe, it still looks implausible within the aesthetics of Piltover and Zaun). ** Lucian in the ''Rise of the Sentinels'' event came off as a major {{Jerkass}}. He constantly berates, yells at, and insults the rest of the cast, including the Rookie, the player character, and Senna, the love of his life, in a way that some believed to be approaching FetishizedAbuser territory, and attempts to deny her agency several times throughout the story despite her being a more powerful Sentinel than he is. Lucian also conspires with ''Thresh'', his mortal enemy, in a particularly stupid way that leads to Thresh escaping the Shadow Isles, free to torture and abuse others in the same way that Lucian had fought so hard to free Senna from in the first place. Fans quickly called foul on this, calling it an IdiotBall at best and OutOfCharacter at worst, given how adamant Lucian was to destroy Thresh before this. The writers stated that Lucian [[OOCIsSeriousBusiness was meant to be bad-tempered due to the stress he was under]], but acknowledged he was not given enough kind moments to not come across as an asshole 24/7.

* TransAudienceInterpretation: One oft-discussed aspect of Taliyah during her development is that [[WhatCouldHaveBeen her lead writer and creative team originally drafted her as being a transgender woman]], and while this was left out of the final product, they and many of her fans still hold onto this as a personal headcanon. The fact that much of the core of her story -- a young girl who wants to accept herself and her powers, as well as be accepted by a loving tribe -- is still intact makes it fairly easy for audiences to interpret as a transgender parallel.

Hints are also found elsewhere, such as the Riot Games Music twitter account [[https://twitter.com/riotgamesmusic/status/1548714149009506305 posting art]] of a series of doodles by Taliyah, including triangle shapes colored in pink, blue, and white, the colors of the transgender pride flag.
