A man who enjoys violence and carnage, whether he or someone else is the cause of it,, underneath his [[FauxAffablyEvil polite mask]] lies a {{sadist}}ic [[TheSociopath sociopath]] whose cruelty and depravity is matched only by his boss.

* TheyCopiedItSoItSucks: The basic setup and much of the first episode did bear a striking resemblance to ''CodeGeass'', which caused many fans to complain. Episode 2 somewhat quelled these complaints.

** While the official pairing is quite obviously Shu and Inori, many fans actually consider [[{{Tsundere}} Ayase]] or [[NiceGirl Hare]] as better romantic partners. Some also prefer to ship Shu and Mana.
** Fans were also somewhat surprised at the [[ShipTease hints]] of a Tsugumi and Daryl pairing, but quickly embraced it.
*** At the same time though, some fans are disgusted at how forced the Tsugumi/Daryl pairing is.
*** Nonetheless, almost none of the fans was satisfied with the abrupt end they put to the ship.

** Of course, it all becomes moot when it is revealed that GHQ were the ones to trigger the Lost Christmas event in the first place.
*** It seems more because the GHQ leadership is corrupt and have their own ulterior motives. However, Dan is proof that at least some GHQ staff actually believe in GHQ's stated ideals.
*** Not necessarily the leadership, even though Major General Yan is kind of an asshole. The real villains are Souichirou Keido and the [[InterserviceRivalry Antibodies]] who are responsible for the events surrounding the series. See Episode 11, where they were the only ones to suffer no effects from the Apocalypse Virus because of vaccines they had injected themselves with beforehand, and all other GHQ personnel ended up KIA by the Virus because the Antibodies had "conveniently" left them out of the loop.

** Shu and Inori. Some people theorize that the number of {{Ensemble Darkhorse}}s on this show is caused by the fact that people dislike them so much that they leach on everybody else.

* LoveItOrHateIt: One of the biggest ones on the last years. It's ''Guilty Crown'' an excellent anime with gorgeous work and music, or a weird fest of cliches and plot holes?

* BaseBreaker: Ayase is divisive among both the {{Fandom}} and {{Hatedom}}. Some like her for her CharacterDevelopment, status as a HandicappedBadass ActionGirl, and ShipTease with Shu, while others can't forgive her for her harsh personality and rudeness to Shu in the earlier episodes.

Segai doesn't do this because he cares for Shu, he does it so that [[InLoveWithYourCarnage he can see Shu's powers for himself]], claiming it to be "more important that your life" and "beautiful". He later leads an assault on one of the last Funeral Parlor strongholds, just so he can see Shu regain the Power of the Kings and the destruction it creates. He also tries to help Keido accomplish his twisted goals by spreading the Apocalypse Virus through a radio tower, in an attempt to kill millions of people. His last act of malevolence is trying to kill Ayase, a girl who is in a wheelchair, by hitting her with a truck before Shu stops him.

** [[ApocalypseMaiden Mana Ouma]] is what happens when one combines all the worst aspects of a {{Yandere}} and an OmnicidalManiac. She was first shown to be sweet, caring, and gentle, but is revealed to be [[TroublingUnchildlikeBehavior much more disturbing]]. When she was five, she was infected by the Apocalypse Virus, but managed to gain control of it. When her brother, Shu was born three years later, she developed a [[BrotherSisterIncest twisted obsession of him]], claiming he was the "Adam" to her "Eve" of a new race. * LoveItOrHateIt: One of the biggest ones on the last years. It's Guilty Crown an excellent anime with gorgeous work, or a plot-hole rich work that's also stereotypical?

Most agree the premise of the show and several areas of its writing are either awful, CrossesTheLineTwice, or SoBadItsGood, but a lot cannot help but be interested in the show. * EnsembleDarkhorse: Ayase is often considered to be a better or at least more entertaining character than Inori and a lot of fans [[FanPreferredCouple were hoping she´d hook up with Shu]]. The massive levels of ShipTease the pair had in [[YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre episode]] [[BackToBackBadasses 13]] and [[CharacterDevelopment episode]] [[LuminescentBlush 21]] certainly helped.
** Colonel Dan Eagleman, who was one of the only nice members of the otherwise ObviouslyEvil GHQ organization. Many a fan found his [[BenevolentBoss cheerfulness, honesty and giving credit where it was due]] to be very endearing. Just as many were dissapointed that he was killed off not even halfway through the series, only a handful of episodes after being introduced.
