It was certainly a dickish move and made it easy to hate most of them, but yeah, can't see why the kids are beyond redemption for biting back. Especially since, along with all the abuse and mistrust from Shu's end, Arisa and Souta were pretty much out of their minds by that point (and the latter seemed indecisive about betraying Shu anyway) and the rest have been shown to be swayed easily by mob mentality.
tl;dr I'd say the example should be removed.

I'm still not convinced that the school betraying Shu qualifies as a Moral Event Horizon. Seriously, guys, how is biting back against a brutal, paranoid slaver irredeemably evil? Or do you think that, say, the Rank Fs should have thanked him and gone on their way after he forced them to carry out difficult, hazardous work whilst dying from the Apocalypse Virus, and then refused to help them when they inevitably failed?
