* Bart Thumper from "The Rise and Fall of the Evil Guff" might take the crown; he's the only child in the show to outright commit murder, [[SelfMadeOrphan killing his own parents]] with a powerful fart before threatening to destroy the entire planet.

** Jack Delaunay de Havilland De Trop insists on showing his foot verruca to people instead of getting it treated.

* AdaptationDisplacement: Finding out the CITV cartoon was based on four published books frequently becomes a shock to many of the cartoon's old viewers. Now those books became out of print in the mid-2000s (just as the book series got revived, interestingly), they've essentially become invoked {{Vaporware}}, so the shock and discovery is now more common.

** Chico, from "The Stick Men", is the only child of workaholic parents who [[AbusiveParents care nothing about him]]. Constantly farmed out to nannies who never take him to meet kids of his own age, he creates friends through crayons. His parents and his nanny find it a nuisance and constantly insult him about it. Fortunately, he gets his happy ending when he lives with his friends, [[LaserGuidedKarma and his parents are killed in a helicopter accident]].

** The Shop Owner in ''Sweets'' when he subjects 7 children to a {{And I Must Scream}} fate by turning them into shop dummies while they are still alive and aware of their surroundings.

** Dorothy May, the sadistic prankster from "The Piranha Sisters", who often gets her [[TooDumbToLive sister]] [[TheWoobie Petey]] into trouble with her practical jokes. Hours before the ultimate pranks (on Petey's ''birthday'', no less!) a skeleton spirit vows revenge and warns that "all the jokes will turn on you". Unsurprisingly, Dorothy May ignores him.
** In "Fat Boy with a Trumpet" sadistic Johnny Bullneck and his gang take Timothy's bullying to such torturous extremes (stripping him of his clothes, throwing him to the mud and planning to throw at him heavy balls that would seriously injure him) that it's actually a relief when he is fried.

** Monty's mother in "Monty's Python" only makes an appearance to stop her son from feeding his sister to the pet snake, but seems to be oblivious to her son constantly bullying her before and after this incident, as well as her son making the pet snake eat all the other pets.
** Farmer Tregowan in "The Chipper Chums Go Scrumping" [[spoiler:when he shoots Stinker the dog.]] [[FromBadToWorse It all goes downhill from there]].
** Serena in "Death By Chocolate", when she ate her sister's food in front of her.

* FridgeHorror:
** The implication the lives of many of the parents of these children[[note]]with a few obvious exceptions, like Gwendolyn's parents from "Crocodile Tears", who cry for a decade without stopping when their daughter is eaten by a crocodile[[/note]] are ''much better'' when their children are killed, kidnapped, or mutilated. The mother of tantrum-throwing, mouthy and embarrassing Thomas from "Sweets" ''doesn't even remember he exists'' after he disappeared [[spoiler:(he was turned into a mannequin)]].

* WidgetSeries: Pretty much a wabbit.

* CriticalResearchFailure: Greta Gawky in "The People Potter" is overly clumsy, but the story [[ManipulativeEditing is framed]] to make the reader [[DesignatedVillain despise her]]. Whenever she says that she cannot control her clumsiness, the LiteralistSnarking automatically claims she is lying and/or refusing to take responsibility. However, unexplained clumsiness can be caused by a variety of medical conditions, such as sudden growth spurts,[[note]]Greta is 2 meters tall (roughly 6 foot 7)[[/note]] hearing loss, and there is also a disorder named [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Developmental_coordination_disorder dyspraxia]]. So with her parents, children at school and the story ''itself'' against her, Greta becomes UnintentionallySympathetic.

* SpiritualSuccessor: The CITV cartoon, to ''WesternAnimation/WolvesWitchesAndGiants''.

* WhatDoYouMeanItsForKids: The franchise can get really gruesome at times. Not only is the tone and the subjects pretty dark for a franchise aimed at children, but it features character deaths and doesn't shy away from showing blood. It's incredible the writers were able to get away with it, especially since this is a show aimed for kids.

*** The Chipper Chums themselves, as well as their family members. They all talk in 1950s StockBritishPhrases -- the sort that are parodied nowadays, like "I say!" or use words like "spiffing" and "chaps" -- and are unnaturally polite and enthusiastic all the time. The narm is UpToEleven when they keep their StiffUpperLip as Tregowan is threatening them with a shotgun; [[spoiler:when Tregowan shoots Stinker,]] they chastise him like a misbehaving child.

*** It's such a good parody of a typical children's novel by Creator/EnidBlyton, it's easy to see it as a victim of PoesLaw, from the FoodPorn descriptions of the picnic Aunt Fanny packed the kids, to the {{Nostalgia Goggle|s}}d, [[SugarBowl wholesome]], post-UsefulNotes/SecondWorldWar Britain atmosphere. It would make UsefulNotes/TheHaysCode [[TastesLikeDiabetes vomit]].

** The longer the book series went on, a lot of characters were learning similar lessons to the last (i.e. "The Spaghetti Man" and "The Fruit Bat" are about eating what your parents gave you, and too many spoilt children stories to list). Part of this made it seem like Jamie Rix was struggling for inspiration, but in his defense: many stories overlapped in how terribly the protagonists behaved, the CITV cartoon adaptation started out-living the books, and there was no harm in repeating morals to children. What didn't help was some of the appropriately lengthened stories didn't get adapted for the cartoons ("The Well", "Guilt Ghost") yet were unique, in comparison.

* TooBleakStoppedCaring: The franchise overall is very dark and cynical, especially for kids. The characters tend to be very selfish and amoral, and stories almost always end on a [[DownerEnding downer]], however that thankfully doesn't stop it from being entertaining, unlike other examples.

** AdultFear intensifies for the adult readers as a warning to them for not disciplining children.

* HilariousInHindsight: Dolores, from Silence is Golden, is a girl who loves to shout. Years later, Disney would release a film with another Dolores who can hear a pin drop and for whom shouting would probably be painful

** "Burgerskip"/"Burgers" is about a greedy fast-food chain CEO wanting to bulldoze the Amazon rainforest to build more restaurants, which later mirrors the 2019 Amazon rainforest fires which have been accused of being started from a variety of things, from lack of rainfall to illegal arson.

* WidgetSeries: Pretty much a wabbit.

* CommonKnowledge: It's often joked the franchise exists as a thinly veiled WouldHurtAChild fantasy, but some actually believe this. Jamie Rix later revealed he was inspired by ''Literature/ShockheadedPeter'' and when [[LiesToChildren making up The Spaghetti Man to scare his eldest son into eating foreign cuisine]] when they vacationed in France worked.

** "Guilt Ghost"'s plot of a man refusing to tell the police that he accidentally killed someone after punching them in the face, which made them fall to their death, is a lot more disturbing when British newspapers and TV documentaries have reported about the [[https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-38992393 rising]] [[https://www.scotland.police.uk/keep-safe/personal-safety/one-punch crime]] of "one-punch deaths" throughout the 2010s.

** Nickelodeon's change from claymation to 3D and setting the {{Bookends}} from the Scream Squeam cinema to the [=HotHell=] Darkness.

* UnintentionalPeriodPiece: The story "The Dumb Clucks" ends with the two antagonists agreeing to visit Bombay. By the time ''Fearsome Tales for Fiendish Kids'' was published (1996), the Indian city had officially changed its name back to Mumbai[[note]]Bombay was its name during the British Empire[[/note]] in November 1995.

** Pylon from "Superstitious Nonsense" could have a mental health issue (OCD, for example) that causes her extreme paranoia.

* FridgeHorror: The implication that the lives of many of the parents of these children[[note]]with a few obvious exceptions, like Gwendolyn's parents from "Crocodile Tears", who cry for a decade without stopping when their daughter is eaten by a crocodile[[/note]] are ''much better'' when their children are killed, kidnapped, or mutilated. ** "[[YouLookFamiliar Hey, it's X from Y!]]"[[labelnote:Explanation]]Because of the UniversalAdaptorCast and a certain amount of character models in the original series, quite a lot of familiar faces return in different stories whether as another character or as an extra in the background of a crowd. The one that's picked up the most by commenters on social media is Dorothy May Piranha ("The Piranha Sisters"), who is also Savannah Slumberson ("The Grub-A-Blub-Blub"), but you've also got Ginger ("Knock Down Ginger") and Ginger ("The Chipper Chums Go Scrumping"), and [[https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/grizzlytales/images/f/fe/7134FD8E-0DC4-4DEA-B80E-32FE441139A9.jpeg/revision/latest?cb=20180822195333 Mr. Clucks/Mr. Klutz]] and many trading background characters, such as the plumber from "The Watermelon Babies".[[/labelnote]]

* PeripheryDemographic: Adults are the second-biggest fan demographic of the franchise. Some parents, others respect and claim the franchise could easily rival adult horror.
* ReplacementScrappy: The Night Night Porter, and the [=HotHell=] as well, especially for the audience that grew up with the Uncle Grizzly and his Squeam Screen cinema.
* RootingForTheEmpire: Many of the obnoxious behaviours the characters have is enough to make the audience cheer when the supernatural even occurs.
* SpiritualSuccessor: The TV show, to ''WesternAnimation/WolvesWitchesAndGiants''.

** Father Tregowan [[spoiler:shooting Stinker]] in "The Chipper Chums Go Scrumping" might be a violent overreaction but he ''did'' order the children to control him as "he sprang for [Tregowan's] throat".

** Nickelodeon's change from claymation to 3D and setting the {{Bookends}} from the Scream Squeam cinema to the [=HotHell=].

* CompleteMonster ("The Black Knight"): [[TheEvilPrince Prince Egor]] is an [[BlackKnight evil knight]] known for his evil deeds in battle. When he hears that its king is dead, he invades the country of {{Ruritania}}, [[TyrantTakesTheHelm steals the crown]], and subjects its people to endless misery. He steals all of his new subjects' wealth and possessions, [[AGodAmI forces everyone to worship him]], kills all the animals and burns all the crops, leaving his subjects with nothing to eat and beheads anyone who speaks out against him. Not even children are safe, as they are put in service of the Black Knight.
