* UnpleasableFanbase: Most fans wanted Lily to be with Rufus, rather than Bart. When [[McLeaned Robert John Burke left the show]] the fans got their wish. Now, a season later, they are complaining about how dull Lily and Rufus are together, and how Bart was so much better for and with her, and should never have been killed off.
** When Chuck and Blair took a season to get together, the fans complained the build-up was too long and they should be a couple. When they became a couple, the fans complained that they were being toned down and needed to go back to their season 2 dynamic. When they broke up in order to return to that exact dynamic, the fans complained that the writers had ruined everything and should have kept them together forever. And when they inevitably reunite, you can bet the fans will complain that Blair shouldn't have taken him back so soon. AAAHHHHHHH! Poor Josh Schwartz.
*** Although to be fair, that last part might be because of the extremely stupid way the writers went about breaking them up.
*** I don't think C+ B is an example of an unpleasable fanbase, but rather an ignored fanbase. The fans wanted them together long before they did get together, and the fans have always been specific about what they mainly want to see with them together - sexiness and the two scheming their way to the top together. When they got together we got none of that, which is what the fans complained about. It was never about the fans wanting them back to will they/won't they territory.

*** YourMileageMayVary. Especially considering the twitter responses for season 4 so far...

* AdultsAreUseless: With the exception of Rufus Humphrey... Or maybe they just have different standards.
** YourMileageMayVary on that "with the exception of" - sure, compared to the other parents on the show he's pretty stable, but let's not forget how often he blindly tries to force the way things "should" be done onto his kids rather than letting them make their own mistakes - even when that makes him something of a hypocrite (which Jenny actually calls him on during the whole internship/dropping out of school fiasco)

* AnnoyingYoungerSibling: It's debatable on whether this is true of [[YourMileageMayVary Jenny]], but it is completely averted with Eric. He is the wisest, noblest, coolest younger sibling anyone could ask for. Eric's also the only character in the whole show with common sense, as well as the only one who'd actually be liked by real people in the real world.

* DethroningMomentOfSuck: What else? [[spoiler:Chair breaking up thanks to the "''Indecent Proposal''" storyline.]]
** [[spoiler: Chuck sleeping with Jenny.]] That is all.

* MoralEventHorizon: [[{{Your Mileage May Vary}} Many viewers]] feel that "Inglourious Bassterds" is the moment when Chuck Bass crossed the line from {{Magnificent Bastard}} to {{Complete Monster}}.

*** [[YourMileageMayVary Highly debatable]]. It seemed to this troper that she was acting out of concern for Chuck, not wanting him to be conned again like he was by his mother. Eva was hardly the saint Chuck made her out to be - he told her all her darkest secrets and she didn't tell him she was a hooker. Blair was right to be suspicious, and besides, Chuck was the one who ''chose'' to believe Blair over Eva.
* {{Narm}}: The last scene of season three, where [[spoiler:Chuck gets shot]], according to many viewers.

** And people have actually warmed up to them! A lot of fans say that their interactions are the most enjoyable thing on the show right now.
*** Very much a case of YourMileageMayVary. For every fan who has warmed up to Dan and Blair there seems to be one who hates them more with each episode. Some fans are even declaring they'll not watch another episode until they put and end to Dair.

** There also seems to be a great deal of warring between fans who believe Nate belongs with Serena and those who believe he belongs with Jenny, even though [[YourMileageMayVary there hasn't been much]] on the show itself to support the latter pairing.

* WhatAnIdiot: Serena spends months doing everything she can to get her father's attention. Most of it consists of getting paparazzi to take pictures of her partying like crazy, appearing topless and sleeping around. Then when her father does appear she doesn't want him to know about her wild past, and pretends like the craziest thing she's ever done is take part in a coco drinking contest. Only to Serena (and possibly Nate) could that make any logical sense.
* WhyWouldAnyoneTakeHimBack: Even the most die hard [[{{Fan Nickname}} Chair]] fans admit that what Chuck did to Blair in "Inglorious Bassterds" is pretty unforgivable.
** So from a narrative standpoint, the only way to ever credibly revive that relationship was to make Blair do something comparably loathesome to Chuck. Which she did, less than half a season later, in "Touch of Eva."
*** Although [[YourMileageMayVary YMMV]]. A lot of fans don't see Blair's actions in this episode as being all that bad. She does seem to feel bad when she finds out [[spoiler:Eva left]] and her lack of trust regarding her makes perfect sense. The last time Chuck blindly put that much faith in someone he ended up losing everything, and [[spoiler:Eva ''had'' been lying to him all along about her past.]]
* WithFriendsLikeThese: Nate Archibald is definitely a strong candidate for Worst Friend Ever. He calls Chuck his best friend, but these are just some examples of how Nate treats him:
** Chuck sold Victrola in order to loan Nate's mother the money she needed to keep their house. Nate reacted like Chuck had committed a henious crime.
** After Bart's funeral Chuck disappeared for a month and returns suicidal. Instead of checking up on his so called best friend Nate decides to go hang with Vanessa.
** Nate starts dating Blair, knowing full well she's the only girl Chuck has ever loved. Then he goes to Chuck in full woe is me mode, whining about how Blair hasn't changed and how he doesn't like her personality. Then he freaks out whenever Chuck is anywhere near Blair, even though Blair's best friend is Chuck's stepsister so they're bound to run into one another.
** Although he's gotten better in season 3, he still takes every opportunity possible to mention what a horrible person Chuck is and how he "deserves to be alone."
*** [[WhatTheHellHero That's]] [[DethroningMomentOfSuck because]] [[JerkAss he]] [[CharacterDerailment does]].
*** [[YourMileageMayVary Or does he?]]
* YourMileageMayVary: Is Chuck a poor soul with a heart of gold who's been mistreated his whole life, or a depraved sociopatic would-be rapist? Should the assaults on Serena and Jenny in the pilot even be considered canon? Would he have actually raped Jenny if Dan and Serena hadn't shown up, and does it even matter if the answer is no? Fans disagree wildly.
** Also opinions on the series as a whole; it's a LoveItOrHateIt situation.
*** Especially starting with the second half of season two.

* MindGameShip: Chuck and Blair spend a better part of the second season competing over who could invoke this trope the most.
** This trope is also the reason for Chuck and Blair's season 3 break up.

Added DiffLines:

* NoSuchThingAsBadPublicity: Played straight and subverted.
** Played straight when Chuck has the cops raid his own pub opening. Also in the next episode, with this comment:
-->'''Chuck''': Do you think people go to the Mercer for the maid service? They go to see Russel Crowe throw a hissy.
** Subverted later in season three when Chuck is accused of sexual harassment and ends up having to sign over his hotel to save it from the bad PR.
** Played straight by the show itself. When a reviewer called the show: "A parent's worst nightmare" the publicity department put that quote up on huge posters and used it for advertisement.

Added DiffLines:

** Gossip Girl herself likes to call them Waldass. Never caught on with the fans.
** Other examples include Darena (Dan/Serena) and Nair or Blate (Nate/Blair).
** Serenate (Serena/Nate).
** The Dan/Blair pairing is a rather fun example. Those who ship them tend to call them Dair (as in "we dare to dream") while those who dislike them together tend to call then Blan (as in "they're bland together").
** Not a romantic portmanteau, but the extended Van der Woodsen/Bass/Humphrey family, with Lily's marriages to first Bart and then Rufus, has become the Van der Bassphrey family.

** Serena and Nate. A carefree, BrainlessBeauty duo, both fickle and free-spirited and neither with any real ability to come up with a cunning plan or with any real drive in their lives. Often compared to a pair of golden retrievers (with Chuck and Blair being their masters).

Removed the bit about Dan and Blair having much more in common than Chuck and Blair. The show has spent three seasons showing us how much Chuck and Blair have in common so I think it\'s safe to say she has a lot in common with both boys.

** As per BaseBreaker, some have jumped to Dan/Blair, as it's free from the whole stepsiblings issues that the Dan/Serena ship has, and well, Dan hasn't whored out Blair yet. They also seem to have a lot more in common with each other than Chuck and Blair. Well, except scheming and plotting, but that isn't exactly healthy behaviour.

*** Also kudos to the writers for actually developing the relationship organically over an arc compared to their usual method of just throwing people together. The start of as allies to find Juliet, spend time together because there is literally no one else, begin to bond, actually become good friends (not that they would admit it) and you can actually see how they could start dating. Similarly the two are shown to have similar interests that they get along over, like a shared taste in classic movies as opposed to a pairing like Dan and Serena who seem to have nothing in common.

** Many fans still seem to be die hard on board the ship. I think the jury's still out on this one, but the writers sure are taking a gamble.
** As of the season three finale, Chuck did nothing to try to win Blair back except give her an ultimatum, slept with Jenny, tried to keep it from Blair and thought it was completely appropriate to try to propose to Blair in that very same night. Yup, the Chair ship is sinking and showing no signs of bouncing back.
*** YourMileageMayVary. Especially considering the twitter responses for season 4 so far...
*** It's pretty much a BrokenBase at this point. A large number of fans hate what they have done with the pairing and feel like Chair have lost their appeal. An equally large amount of fans are as passionate as ever, refusing to give up on the couple no matter what the writers come up with. ** Some also feel that Ed Westwick was incredibly hammy in the episodes dealing with the aftermath of Bart's death. Others think it's his best work yet.

** Not so much anymore. While what [[spoiler:she]] did was very much beyond the MoralEventHorizon, [[spoiler:her]] motive now puts her squarely in KnightTemplar territory: [[spoiler:avenging her brother in prison who was Serena's teacher in boarding school who was put away after the school got a complaint from Serena claiming statutory rape.
