* MoneyDearBoy: Many questioned why Pixar would make a sequel to it's worst rated (though still good) movie. Put simply: the original had merchandising success on the level of '''[[StarWars STAR WARS]]'''. Making a sequel not only helps Pixar's bottom line, it likely helped other movies get produced.

** 'Be Yourself' is a perfectly reasonable aesop, but should it really still be applied when that means you're humiliating yourself and your friends at parties, and ignoring other people's cultures? It seems that being yourself is so important, you must never change even if it makes you and your friends look like idiots.

** 'Be Yourself' Mater completely embarrasses Lightning and himself multiple times. Lightning is made to look like a perfectly reasonable aesop, but should it really still jerk for scolding him for it. Should 'be yourself' ''really'' be applied the Aesop when that means you're humiliating making yourself and your friends at parties, and ignoring other people's cultures? It seems that being yourself is so important, you must never change even if it makes you and your friends look like idiots.fools? How about if you're blithely ignoring the cultures of other people?

Parvum Opus is being cut, per TRS thread.

* ParvumOpus: Interestingly enough, the original ''Cars'' was considered Pixar's weakest movie... until they made ''Cars 2'', which holds a 39% rotten score on Rotten Tomatoes. This did not go unnoticed by online snarkers.

* NightmareFuel: Some of the FamilyUnfriendlyDeath in the second movie. Special mention must go to the death of Rod "Torque" Redline, who gets tortured for information by the villains, and then blown up. While his actual death is partially obscured as a reflection on a screen that's showing a picture of Mater, we get to see the explosion and the flames rising from his body. Not helped by the fact that it underscores an aversion of NeverSayDie.

* CriticalDissonance: The sequel has been not very well received by critics, yet loved by its target audience.
* EarWorm: Music/{{Weezer}}'s "You Might Think" from ''Cars 2'' is upbeat, and very catchy. It's actually a {{cover|ed up}} of a song by... wait for it, Music/TheCars.
* FamilyUnfriendlyAesop:
** To more conservative viewers, the sequel's [[spoiler:"once big oil, always big oil"]] message might come across as one.
** Something to dislike on both sides of the spectrum as the Aesop can also be viewed as [[spoiler: alternative fuel is an evil scam.]]
** In addition, as far as the friendship between Lightning and Mater goes, ''Cars 2'' can come off as, "Be yourself, even if your true self is a jerk who constantly embarrasses everyone around you and creates big setbacks for your friends."
* HarsherInHindsight: Narrowly averted in ''Cars 2'': The weakness/trigger of the new fuel was supposed to be radiation but after the nuclear power plant meltdown in Japan they changed it to radio waves (as of John Lasseter's "Day in the Life" documentary).
* HilariousInHindsight:
** Turns out ''Cars 2'' [[Film/ShanghaiNoon isn't the first sequel starring Owen Wilson to end with a knighting in England.]]
** A year after ''Cars 2'', Film/JamesBond would have to deal with his age in a [[Film/{{Skyfall}} similar manner]] as Finn [=McMissile=], right down to the Aston Martin.
* HoYay: Mater puts together quite a day out for his best friend when he comes home, and even tries to infiltrate Lightning's date with Sally. They have a secret handshake that a bystander notices gets longer every time they do it. If that's not bad enough, at one point Lightning chases after Mater repeatedly yelling "You're the bomb." Yeah...
* InternetBackdraft:
** Lots regarding the sequel, going from diehards saying that the film only seems bad in comparison to the rest of Pixar's work (and calling any and all critics of the movie "haters" who are gleeful that Pixar has finally produced a genuinely bad film) to persons who actually are gleeful that Pixar has finally produced a genuinely bad film (and wasted no time in rubbing it in the noses of said diehards).
** Quite a few Pixar fan's reaction to the dual announcement of ''The Incredibles 2'' and ''Cars 3'' was "YES! Incredibles 2! But WHY THE HELL are they making another Cars movie?!"

Not helped by the fact that it underscores an aversion of NeverSayDie.
* TooCoolToLive: [[spoiler:Why would anyone cast Creator/BruceCampbell as a superspy just to kill him off? Not to mention that poor British spy crushed into a cube in the [[ActionPrologue beginning]]...]]
* ToughActToFollow: Even if the second movie was more positively received, it still would have been considered very underwhelming compared to ''WesternAnimation/{{Up}}'' and especially ''WesternAnimation/ToyStory3'' before it.
* UncannyValley:
** In Paris, Mater comes across a car that has its eyes in its headlights instead of on the windshield (a possible TakeThat toward previous depictions of anthropomorphized cars). Mater ([[NightmareFuel and the audience]]) are suitably horrified.
** It does, however, bring back memories of the cars in ''WesternAnimation/TheBraveLittleToaster'', which John Lasseter worked on.
** Also, RC, a remote-control dune buggy from the ''WesternAnimation/ToyStory'' series films appears to have headlights for eyes.
* UnfortunateImplications:
** Stephen Krosecz of ''WebVideo/AnimatedAnalysis'' [[http://blip.tv/sketchdcomedy/animated-analysis-202-cars-2-5934433 argues]] that the heroes of the second film are [[FantasticRacism prejudiced against the lemon cars]], that the film doesn't seem to treat this as a bad thing, and that one could interpret this as an [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ableist ableist]] message.
* ViewerGenderConfusion: Two race cars, one pink, one blue. One's a boy, and the others a girl. And it's not the ones you're probably thinking of. ''WesternAnimation/FamilyGuy'' did do this gag years before, but it was a parody of the Chevron claymation car commercials that aired in the late 1990s.
