You shouldn't be making excuses for releasing an unfinished game. Just because something might happen in months.

** The initial set of 3 strongholds in the release version of the game were disappointing to say the least. One stronghold is a repeat of a story mission you already played in the campaign, the second is a repeat of the final boss fight, and third simply recycles a boss that you had fought previously in the campaign.

** The [[https://www.ea.com/games/anthem/acts 90-day roadmap]] was not received well by some players. The game at launch was fairly content-bare, but some were willing to give BioWare some slack because the first content drop, Echoes of Reality, was a three-part expansion, starting release in March 2019, according to the general roadmap released before the game. However, when BioWare released the 90-day Roadmap, many players were quite disappointed, as only Part One of Echoes of Reality is coming in March. With part Two in April and Part three in May. On top of that, most of the content seems to just consist of Freeplay Events or stuff like the expanded progression system, guilds, leaderboards, Legendary Missions, and Stronghold Challenges that all feel like they should have been in the game when it launched. All told, the only actual new content in the 90-day roadmap is a single Stronghold coming in April, and the Cataclysm coming in May. For a game that many feel is very light on content already, the fact that the next ninety days hold very little in terms of content is very worrying, and only furthers concerns that the game was rushed out by EA in order to come out before their 2019 fiscal year ended in March. The Cataclysm being released in May is a point of particular contention because many players feel like three months is way too long to wait for the game to release what is supposed to be the Pinnacle Endgame Activity.

You need to wait 6 months after the release as stated on the main Broken Base page. Also Broken Base is for contentions within the fandom of the work, not the general reception.

* BrokenBase: Reception from both fans and critics has been very mixed; some enjoyed the story, others hated it. Some found the gameplay perfect, others not so much. Even those who love the game will generally admit that, yes, Anthem is flawed and needs a lot of love, and that Bioware and/or EA made a mistake with the demo builds that certainly cost them some sales. Major issues include load times (an [=SSD=] is practically mandatory) and number of load screens, a certain poorly-thought out (but now somewhat-fixed) 'roadblock' stage in the main story, general connectivity problems, and poor optimization (subpar [=FPS=] even on very high end rigs) and more. But despite all that, many will also admit there's a lot of potential that Bioware can polish up and probably should have been given far more time to work on. Also see ''Internet Backdraft'', ''Tainted By The Preview'', and ''Win The Crowd'' below for further information.

* ThatOneLevel: The "Tombs of the Legionnaires" quest in particular has been picking up heavy criticism. Rather than following a traditional mission structure, the Tomb quest is instead a set of achievements the player must complete in the Free Play mode in order to unlock four tombs and progress the story. While most of the achievements are easy to complete, there are a few that are incredibly difficult or time consuming to complete. For example, some of the objective require you to kill a legendary enemy or open a chest, except credit only goes to the person who scores the killing shot or actually physically opens the chest. Another objective is to find 10 secret collectibles hidden throughout the game world. Suffice to say, many players were angry at the level of grind needed to complete a '''required story mission''', which brought the pacing of the entire campaign to a screeching halt.

*** Alleviated somewhat with early access players getting their hands on the game. While the pricing of shards at about 100 shard per dollar was accurate, Javelin armor sets have been adjusted to 850 shards (about $8.50), with decals and textures hovering around 300 to 500 shards each. On the other hand, the in-game currency prices were raised across the board. While still a bit early to say for sure, some players have calculated the prices for Javelin skins to break down to about a week's worth of grinding, playing for two to three hours a day. For a number of players, the new prices are much more fair (or at least, much more palatable), while those who are against microtransactions in full price games are still left with a bad taste in their mouths. And then there is the third faction who claim that either EA "leaked" the original screenshots themselves as a decoy & always intended for the final prices to be what they are, or that they'll try to add even more expensive items further down the line.

** Following a news story that Anthem was apparently "Do or Die" for Creator/BioWare, and that if the game fails, the studio "could look very different in the future," many of their fans felt like EA was forcing them into a HeadsIWinTailsYouLose situation with regards to Anthem. If the game succeeds, then Creator/BioWare will support it with continued development and we will get fewer of the single player, story-driven games that the fans expect from them, and if Anthem fails, Creator/BioWare might be dissolved completely and absorbed into EA like so many other studios.
** Furthered in 2018's E3, in which quite a few revelations about the game were made. The fact that the game will not have any companions or romance was particularly badly received considering the fanbase Bioware collected over the years has grown attached to the characters the studio creates and the many romantic sidequests. The many, ''many'' similarities in story and gameplay to ''VideoGame/{{Destiny}}'' also caused some people to complain about the game's lack of originality. The focus on multiplayer also made some people accuse EA and Bioware of being completely out of touch with their own market, due to a general desire of players at the time for single-player, story-driven games.

The reveal that there would be no companions or romance in this game -- two things that have been a staple for Bioware and one of the fans favorite mechanics -- resulted in fans deciding that Bioware has lost contact with fans and don't know what they want anymore, while gameplay footage caused the game to be accused of being a ''VideoGame/{{Destiny}}'' knock-off.
** Unfortunately, any hype for the game has been hampered due to the performance of past Bioware and EA games. For example, the SoAverageItsOkay but fairly disappointing ''VideoGame/MassEffectAndromeda'' tarnished the Bioware brand name in the eyes of many fans, even though the game was technically developed by their less-competent Montreal branch. The lootbox debacle over ''VideoGame/StarWarsBattlefrontII2017'' has led many fans to cynically predict EA will find a way to ruin ''Anthem'' with lootboxes and microtransactions.
** The VIP Demo. While most people who played it agreed that the mechanics were quite solid and fun, quite a few were put off by the bugs and glitches in the demo, as well as subpar performance, and major server issues that prevented a significant number of people from logging in for quite some time. The fact that it was advertised as a demo of the finished game and not an in-progress beta made many people concerned, as the game was scheduled for release not even a month later, that the game would face a rough launch. [=BioWare=] assured people that the Demo build was six weeks out of date and missing quite a few of the bug fixes (and even features) that are present in the final game, but some still remain unconvinced.
** [[InvertedTrope Inverted]] with the absence of PvP. From the get-go, Bioware and EA have confirmed the game will not have competitive multiplayer at launch or in immediate post-launch content. Normally this announcement would elicit outrage, yet many fans are actually glad that there isn't competitive multiplayer since this means that the game could focus more on story and endgame content, which was a major problem for ''VideoGame/StarWarsTheOldRepublic'' and ''VideoGame/{{Destiny}}''. It helps that the game was never advertised with such a mode, making the developers come off as honest instead of misleading.
* SugarWiki/VisualEffectsOfAwesome: The Gameplay footage shown in the reveal looks absolutely ''stunning,'' to the point that many people are anticipating a graphical downgrade of some kind before the game comes out.
* WinTheCrowd:
** While the jury is still out on if the game will be any good or not, many fans are pleased with the amount of open communication between the developers and fans on the official ''Anthem'' subreddit, especially after Creator/{{Bungie}}'s famous (and much maligned) silence and lack of transparency with ''Destiny 2.''
** The Announcement that ''Battlefield V'' wouldn't contain any lootboxes, all microtransactions would be direct-purchase, strictly cosmetic and earnable through gameplay; coupled with the announcement that all of its future DLC would be free made quite a few people optimistic that ''Anthem'' would follow a similar monetization model.
*** Mark Darrah seemingly confirmed this at EA's 2018 E3 show, claiming there will be cosmetic items for sale and the players will always know what they're getting before they buy it. He flat-out said there will be no loot boxes for sale, neither will there be anything that provides advantages in combat. He also confirmed through Twitter that there would be no paid story expansions. He didn't rule out paid DLC entirely but did say that any story expansions would be made free to everyone.
** The 2018 Game Awards trailer showcased the world of Anthem, personal stakes, and the main villain's motivation and goals. For many fans, the trailer's emphasis on story is a reassurance that Bioware hasn't forgotten its roots.
** The [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhNaLyycPN0 Loot System Livestream]] enticed a lot of people who are looking for a loot system with more depth and complexity compared to something like Destiny.
** In response to some complaints (and issues) in the [=VIP=] Demo, all players who played the demo will be issued an additional promotional 'vinyl' pattern for customization when the full game goes live, and the ability to unlock all three alternate Javelins in the demo as an immediate benefit. The latter was largely due to a rather serious bug (or combination of bugs) which also prevented players from unlocking their ''first'' alternate Javelin, but is also obviously aimed at those who wanted to try all four.
** Comments from developers also suggest that most of the material types for Javelins have been made so that they're unlocked purely via progression, with no microtransactions involved.
