* OnceOriginalNowCommon: Though the original game was a groundbreaking RTS in 1997, the release of the ''Definitive Edition'' in 2018 helped to expose just how much it had been surpassed by ''Age of Empires II'', to say nothing of the several other games that had since iterated and expanded upon or diverged from the formula in the two decades since the original came out. Tellingly, a Definitive Edition of ''[=AoEII=]'' released a year later would do much better both critically and commercially, remaining supported for several years beyond with several expansion packs, including "Return to Rome" [[EmbeddedPrecursor incorporating all the content]] from the first game's Definitive Edition.

* SeinfeldIsUnfunny: A common refrain from critics upon the 2018 release of the ''Definitive Edition'' is that while ''AOE I'' was groundbreaking in 1997, it ''really'' doesn't hold up to modern scrutiny due to its EarlyInstallmentWeirdness. ** Eventually, the developers tried again with the ''Return of Rome'' expansion for ''AOE II'', combining the original game's civilizations and units with the engine and gameplay of the sequel, and added features such as unit garrisoning, alarm bells, market resource exchange, gates, and unit formations, plus a plethora of balancing changes. Three new campaigns also showcased what the original game's campaigns would look like with in-mission scripting and voice acting.

* ScrappyMechanic: The pathfinding is utterly atrocious. Your units will happily march the opposite way you ordered them to, often right into an enemy tower or catapult. Large units like elephants or catapults will get caught up on each other constantly, sometimes causing a full-on pileup that makes you stop and sort it out. Units will clip into inaccessible terrain and get stuck. Units ordered to attack will walk right past their target, then turn around and chase after it. This would be forgivable in a game released in 1997, but the ''Definitive Edition'' still has these problems.

* SugarWiki/FunnyMoments: The ''Definitive Edition'' added defeat messages for the original base game's scenarios much in the same vein as what's included in the ''Rise of Rome''.
** If you fail the "Hunting" mission in the Egyptian learning campaign (which simply involves gathering enough food):
-->When a herd of gazelles saw your approach, they stampeded you to death. [[EpicFail Killed by small antelopes]]. Better luck next time.
** The failure message for the 6th mission of the Yamato campaign, "Coup":
-->The Soga find your attempt at keeping your mother in power cute. They call you "mama's boy."
