An animated ChristmasSpecial based upon Creator/DrSeuss' [[Literature/HowTheGrinchStoleChristmas book of the same name]]. It was directed by Creator/ChuckJones, with Creator/BorisKarloff providing the voice of both the eponymous Grinch and the narrator, Creator/JuneForay voicing Cindy Lou Who, and Creator/ThurlRavenscroft performing the classic tune "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch". The special, which follows the plot of the original book closely, was originally broadcast on Creator/{{CBS}} on December 18, 1966, and since then has come to be regarded as one of the all-time classic TV Christmas specials.

* PsychoticSmirk: Played UpToEleven when the Grinch [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihINnlOG6Qk gets the idea of ruining Christmas]], with his enormous evil grin taking just under ''ten seconds'' to spread across his whole face while glaring directly at the viewers.

* UpToEleven: Inverted in the beginning as the Grinch's heart is two sizes smaller than what a normal one should be. Played straight by the end, as it's not only grown to a normal size, but ''one size farther!''

* {{Mondegreen}}: "Trim Up the Tree" ends with the lyrics, "Trim up your uncle and your aunt / With yards of whofut flant." Some have misheard "With yards of whofut flant" as the far more disturbing "And join the UsefulNotes/KuKluxKlan."

* AdaptationalUgliness: The Grinch of the books (and most other adaptations) is basically a furrier, more mischievous looking version of the Whos. Jones' redesign is much more disheveled and sinister looking (and lacks Seuss' trademark overbite), separating him greatly from their cutesy aesthetics.

* HelpImStuck: Subverted. The Grinch gets "stuck only once, for a moment or two" in the first chimney he enters.

** It's even worse in that the red coat and hat were made out of drapes from the Grinch's lair. Let's hope that "[[Film/TheAvengers2012 his mother doth not know about his weareth her drapes.]]"

* ActorAllusion: Boris Karloff voices [[Film/{{Frankenstein 1931}} a green monster]].
