[[WMG: The movie's Ivory Tower design]]
In the movie, the Ivory Towers top is designed to look like a flower. Flowers are where seeds come from, and what does the Childlike Empress give the hero at the end?

[[WMG: The deterioration in Fantasia, the character derailment, bad pop culture references and a lot of the other "quirks" in the 3rd movie are a result of TV rotting Bastion's imagination]]
It makes sense. The world becomes less vivid and cohesive, everyone becomes more shallow and changes in nonsensical ways, and Bastion can no longer think with as much imagination as before. The Childlike Empress arbitrarily restricts his wish, because that's what they do in FairyOddParents

Because Bastion stole the book while Mr. Coriander was in the middle of reading it, Fantastica had to go through a "reset" sequence before the normal story could take place. This is because a new reader would require a new story to draw them into Fantastica. But because cause and effect tend to run back on each other (not unlike the double-Ouroboros emblem), the reset sequence becomes a critical part of Bastian's story.

Imagination gives life to the world of fiction, but the more wishes are fulfilled the more empty a character ultimately becomes. Bastian strives to become an idealised version of himself, but instead comes close to becoming an inhuman abomination.

[[WMG: Connections between TheNeverendingStory and [[Literature/Momo]].]]
The Manipulators are [[Literature/Momo TheGreyMen]]:
* Gmork says that the Manipulators tell lies to humans to gain power over them - By stealing a human's time, the Grey Men gain absolute power over them, as Master Hora explains. And of course they gain that power by telling lies that seem true enough
* When falling victim to the manipulation, the people in The Neverending Story just as the citizens of the unnamed city in Momo have lost their ability to dream and their happiness.
* The Grey Men state children are their greatest enemy - The Chillike Empress knows the human rescuing her will be a child.
* When Fantasians fall victim to The Nothing, they turn from dreams into lie - Gigi looses his ability to dream and instead begins to lie, when the Grey Men make him a TV star and he is kept under constant stress and pressure to succeed as a consequence

[[WMG: Bastian's father is abusive]]]
and probably caused his wife's death, somehow. Bastian is a lot like his mother, so he gets a lot of abuse from his father. He reads books to escape thinking about it. Fantasia represents his childhood, memories of his mother, the things he likes in books, The Nothing is anxieties and fears, especially about growing up and living without his mother.

* This may be a typical result, as it can be expected that most people do not finish reading [[{{Doorstopper}} the book]].

[[WMG: Mr. Coriander is re-reading his own adventures]]
Quite simply, once you have gone through The Neverending Story you can never go back, but only re-read about your past adventure there. In the same way that a book is always new and unexpected the first time you read it, but doesn't change for the second reading.
* However, re-reading it after somebody else has gone through it may then populate the book with a new story. One might even say that the story in this book never ends.

[[WMG: Bastian caused the Nothing by stealing the book from Mr. Coriander]]
* The Nothing, then, is analogous to pages in the book being made blank for the new reader. No matter how much you try to stare at a blank page, you will never be able to make sense of the story written on it (because there is nothing there to read).

Uurgh. Okay, I\'m the one who wrote those two theories, once upon a time, and I\'m kinda embarassed by them, now. I\'m only deleting them because I wrote them. I figure I have only the authority to delee the theories that \'\'I\'\' wrote.

[[WMG:The Childlike Empress is HaruhiSuzumiya.]]
Look at the facts.
* The Childlike Empress has the form of a young woman.
* The Childlike Empress is a goddess in Fantastica.
* When the Childlike Empress does not have a good name, she falls ill (one might say a state of desperate ''melancholy'') and spaces of nothingness begin to envelop the world
* The power of AURYN allows humans to make wishes that change reality so that it has always been so.
* Haruhi has made other universes before according to Itsuki (Koizumi)

All of this sounds like Haruhi. AURYN's power functions a lot like Haruhi's power (a wish is made, but by the time it's fulfilled, it has always been so), the Nothing is a lot like Closed Space in that it's a horrible dead zone that spreads when there is something wrong with the godddess, and she's a young girl. Also, she is quite GenreSavvy. She flat-out tells Atreyu that his journey was specifically planned to be a traditional form of TheHerosJourney in order to draw Bastian in. Once he is drawn in, she has a new name, exciting things start to happen in Fantastica, and the Nothing vanishes. Note that the scene where Bastian begins wishing is in a gray dark place that vanishes when Bastian does something interesting (makes his first wish), similar to how Kyon stopped Haruhi causing the end of the world. Her invisible "powers" could be her version of the S.O.S. brigade.

[[WMG: The Old Man of Wandering Mountain is Kyon.]]
A part of the above theory: if the Childlike Empress is Haruhi, then her opposite number must be Kyon.
Much like Kyon, the Old Man does not approve of the Empress' attitude or behavior. He is quick to point out problems in the Empress' reasoning, and he has the air of a long-suffering observer of the craziness that goes on in Fantastica.
But more importantly, he writes the book, making him the narrator, just like Kyon.

*** "Z" is not that difficult in German, being much more common than in English, so Ende didn't have to work for that one (the word that starts the chapter in German is "zögernd" - "hesitatingly"). "Q", "X" and "Y", on the other hand, are very probably cases of characters invented for the sake of having appropriate words to start the chapters. There are a few other chapters that start with characters' names where that doesn't apply, though ("C" and "F", for instance).
