Doki Doki Plus adds the option for the player to have warnings pop up before triggering scenes.

* DisguisedHorrorStory: The game is initially presented as a cute RomanceGame where you romance the girls using poems they would like, but things get a little darker when serious subjects like depression and suicide come up. Then, when you replay the game after Sayori's suicide, things start to get even more disturbing, like obvious glitching, Yuri's SanitySlippage, and Monika's true nature.

to:

* ExcitedShowTitle: The title has an exclamation point. [[SarcasmMode You know, because it's such]] point, referencing this trope's prevalence in Japanese media and tying in with the game's nature as a [[CosmicHorrorStory bubbly]] [[TheFourthWallWillNotProtectYou and]] [[SurpriseCreepy cheery]] game!DisguisedHorrorStory.

* SpiritualSuccessor:
** Some have placed it in the same category as ''VideoGame/{{Undertale}}'' and ''VideoGame/PonyIsland'' as a SurpriseCreepy piece of {{metafiction}} dedicated to dissecting the tropes of a particular game genre. And like Undertale, both encourage going for the best ending and then never playing them ever again, Undertale by virtue of calling you out for trying to start a new game, this one by flat-out making it unreplayable.
** The game shares some similarities with a story from another medium: the ''Manga/SchoolLive'' manga. Both feature four stereotypical moe anime girls in a bright and cheery school environment, which is actually just a facade for the unending nightmare they live in. And, while their personalities are quite different, both groups of girls share the same hair colors (light brown, hazel, pink and purple).
** Some have compared it to ''VisualNovel/RedactedLife'', a free 2016 visual novel about a character who realises that they're in a game and try to find a way to escape it.
** The game has a few points in common with ''VideoGame/SpookysJumpScareMansion'', in that they're both games with a cute animesque aesthetic that however openly and deliberately sell themselves as horror games and have a female character that talks directly to the player. And in both games the SurpriseCreepy is likely not what the players think at first, playing on their expectations and lulling them in a false sense of security.
** A few fans have even [[{{Foil}} compared]] Monika to the villain of ''WesternAnimation/WreckItRalph'', Turbo. [[labelnote: Spoilers regarding both DDLC and Wreck-it Ralph ahead]] Both are the face of their games (Turbo-Time for Turbo, the Literature Club for Monika), tried screwing with outside forces with [[AttentionWhore attention as their motive]], and are not [[UnPerson afraid of killing others or sabotaging games to get what they want]]. Both their initial actions also involve messing up a game so much to the point of disrepair. However, while Monika ends up being a genuinely kind person, even when her [[GoMadFromTheRevelation true intentions are revealed]], Turbo is just an outright {{Jerkass}}, even before his true colors and backstory are described. Monika is also inexperienced with coding and reprogramming [[OminousVisualGlitch (Act 2 ran ... strangely and it was obvious something was wrong)]], although successful with deleting characters off (albeit temporarily), while Turbo [[RealityWarper was able to reprogram an entire game to operate seamlessly]], yet couldn't delete his competition (Vanellope) so he had to come up with other ways to make the game seem like it was his.[[/labelnote]]
** Many fans consider it to be an evolution of the ''VideoGame/SonicExe'' subgenre of horror, given that one of the characters gains control of the game and one by one wipes out the other characters by twisting both reality and the characters' minds. The main difference is that it's told from the perspective of a neutral unseen protagonist.
** The game falls under a similar category of fiction to ''Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion'' and ''Anime/PuellaMagiMadokaMagica'', as a dark deconstruction of a normally optimistic and upbeat Japanese fiction genre with a PsychologicalHorror twist. All three works have a heavy emphasis on cute girls meant to be endearing to the player, and the initial cutesy vibe of ''DDLC'' is very similar to that of ''Madoka Magica'' and [[Anime/PuellaMagiMadokaMagicaTheMovieRebellion its sequel movie]] before descending into darkness. ''DDLC'' stands apart from ''Eva'' and ''Madoka'' in that it's [[{{Animesque}} American-made]], is a visual novel rather than an anime, and aims to ''directly'' disturb the player rather than merely using its shock horror elements to tell a story.
** ''DDLC'' has its own SpiritualSuccessor in the form of ''VideoGame/BaldisBasicsInEducationAndLearning'', which is also a SurpriseCreepy [[GenreShift Genre Shifting]] game (in this case, shifting to a VideoGame/{{Slender}}-esque SurvivalHorror) with a school setting. The main difference, however, is that ''Baldi's Basics'' masquerades as a [[StylisticSuck terrible]] EdutainmentGame [[{{Retraux}} from the mid-90s and early-2000s]] instead of a DatingSim.
** One horror game that does also masquerade as a DatingSim is ''VisualNovel/HowToDateAMagicalGirl''. Four of the five suitors strongly resemble the girls of ''DDLC'', the game revolves around the protagonist's school, some of the deaths strongly resemble those of ''DDLC'', and the villain carries a heart-shaped pen. The difference is that while Monika wanted to have the player to herself, the villain of ''HTDAMG'' was trying to make the player stop playing the game.

* SurpriseCreepy: The game is initially presented as a cute RomanceGame where you romance the girls using poems they would like, but things get a little darker when serious subjects like depression and suicide come up. It's not possible to become super close to all three girls and get all nine of their cutscenes (three each for Sayori, Yuri, and Natsuki) by playing through Act 1 just one time; doing so requires SaveScumming to play through Act 1 multiple times, which is time-consuming but also rewarding and heartwarming, as it gives you the chance to get to know each girl intimately as she opens up to you.[[note]]To properly get the Golden Ending, you also, upon reaching Act 3, have to sit and let Monika talk to you until she eventually stops chatting and just gazes at you contently, rather than immediately deleting her like you may be inclined to, which is essentially making ''her'' as happy as she can be before you inevitably must delete her to continue the game.[[/note]] If you do so, instead of becoming obsessed with you, Sayori instead recognizes that you spent so much time with all the girls and went out of your way to make them all happy, thanks you for it, and tells you that all the characters love you. During the credits, none of the CG images are deleted this time, and the letter at the end is from Dan Salvato himself instead of Monika.

GenreSavvy players are probably expecting that Sayori is falling in love with the main character and/or is jealous if they've been spending a lot of time with the other girls.
