* RareVehicles: A lot of flyable planes in the game either belong to the purely "paper projects", or existed only as a couple of prototypes.
** Some of the high-tier jets were mediocre flyers in the real world, like the Vought [=F6U=] Pirate.

* GuyInBack: Many ground attack planes and heavy fighters sport a computer-controlled gunner that generally isn't very efficient, but can sometimes decide whose plane is being shot now — yours or the enemy's. This guy is commonly dubbed "Mihalych" if on a Soviet plane, or "machinegunner Hans" when on a German one. "Tailgunner Joe" is reserved for any American planes that may eventually show up with one.

* GradualGrinder: You can meet the planes as much as two (or even three) tiers above you, to whom your puny guns will deal maybe two or three points of damage on every hit — while Tier VII ground attack planes are somewhere in 900 HP range, so shooting your opponent down might take quite a time, even if you can easily keep him in you sight.

** That said, highly skilled pilots can make their lower-tier planes work against higher tiers, turning their craft into WeakButSkilled instead.

A second installment in Wargaming.Net's massively popular and critically acclaimed series of combat [=MMOs=], World Of Warplanes follows pretty much the same premise, but with warplanes, obviously. Just like in VideoGame/WorldOfTanks, you start with a crappy early-30s prop-driven biplane, and grind your way up to the second generation jets of the UsefulNotes/KoreanWar-era, with the cutoff apparently being the introduction of radar sights and guided missile armament just after that war. ** If an aircraft overheat its offensive guns, they'll eventually jam and force an immediate return to base to get them fixed. Overheating only reduces rate of fire in this game.
** Any fire on the aircraft is potentially fatal as it results in the aircraft being heavily damaged or even losing an engine or wing completely. In this game, fire only causes gradual damage-over-time.
** An aircraft can be defined as shot down if it fulfills several of these criteria for critical damage: wing cut, tail cut, alieron(s) broken, rudder broken, elevator broken, engine(s) destroyed, and pilot killed. None of that is possible.
