In the late 1990s, Creator/{{Rare}}ware had an idea for a new game: ''Dinosaur Planet''. It would be an ActionAdventure game based around an alien planet. The two main characters are [[FunnyAnimal anthropomorphic canines]] named Sabre (a wolf) and Krystal (a fox). Sabre is a knight of the Wolven Tribe, and the son of a powerful wizard named Randorn. Krystal is an orphaned Vixon and Randorn's adopted daughter. Somehow, the two end up transported from their home planet of Animus to Dinosaur Planet, which is threatened by the despotic dictator, [[TheGeneralissimo General Scales]].

Both Sabre and Krystal are playable characters that are used in different sections of the game. They play similarly, with Sabre wielding a [[HeroesPreferSwords sword]] while Krystal wields a [[SimpleStaff staff]]. Sabre has a sidekick named Tricky and Krystal's sidekick is Kyte.

''Dinosaur Planet'' was an ambitious title for the UsefulNotes/Nintendo64. In development between 1999 and 2000, ''Dinosaur Planet'' pushed the hardware capabilities of the dying console. It would have been a swan song... if it had came out as expected. Instead, as the game was a late release title, it was ultimately decided that the game should be moved to the upcoming UsefulNotes/NintendoGameCube. During this phase, Creator/ShigeruMiyamoto noticed that the two protagonists, Krystal and Sabre, looked a lot like Fox [=McCloud=] of the ''VideoGame/StarFox'' franchise. This comment led to the game being reworked into ''VideoGame/StarFoxAdventures''. As a result of being a DolledUpInstallment with drastically different gameplay, ''Star Fox Adventures'' became an OddballInTheSeries.

''Dinosaur Planet'' was far into development when it was ultimately cancelled. Most, if not all, of the voice acting had been done, much of the game was finished, and it had been shown off at several events.

A playable prototype of the game was finally leaked in February 20, 2021 by [[https://twitter.com/forestillusion Forest of Illusion]], a video game preservation project. The prototype dates late enough in the game's development cycle that Sabre has already been reskinned into Fox [=McCloud=], though the story itself seems to be largely unchanged from the original version.

----
!!''Dinosaur Planet'' provides examples of:

* AmazingTechnicolorWildlife: Krystal is a bright blue fox.
* DownerBeginning: Krystal was adopted by Randorn as an infant, [[MustMakeAmends specifically to make amends]] for the fact that ''he was the one who personally orphaned her'' ''[[WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds when he massacred her entire tribe in a fit of sorrow-induced rage]]''. Krystal was the only one who survived his rampage, and only because she wasn't noticed until he had calmed down enough to be [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone horrified at what he'd done]].
* FantasticRacism: The Wolven Tribe and Vixon Tribe are bitter rivals. The two species generally don't get along, and wars have been fought between them. One such war killed Randorn's elder son - Sabre is the younger.
* FrothyMugsOfWater: Averted. [[TheAlcoholic Randorn hates it when there's barely any whiskey around]], and he especially hates hangovers.
* TheGeneralissimo: General Scales is a militaristic despot who defends his actions with the excuse that without fear to control them, [[HobbesWasRight Dinosaur Planet would fall into anarchy]].
* InterspeciesRomance: Sabre is a wolf and Krystal is a fox, but there's a romance between them nevertheless.
* KidSidekick: Tricky and Kite are two young dinosaurs who tag along with Sabre and Krystal.
* LeaveNoSurvivors: After the death of his son, Randorn wasn't in the best mood.
* NotBloodSiblings: Sabre and Krystal are love interests despite being adopted siblings.
* OneManArmy: Randorn was able to take out an entire Vixon tribe, by himself.
* OutlivingOnesOffspring: Randorn sent one of his sons off to war, only for said son to die in battle. Randorn's grief and anger led him to wander off, find a camp of Vixon, [[RoaringRampageofRevenge and kill everyone but Krystal]].
* SoleSurvivor: Krystal is the only survivor of her tribe.
* WarriorPrince: Sabre is both a prince and a knight.
* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: Randorn.
* WorldOfFunnyAnimals: Dinosaur Planet is populated by non-anthropomorphic dinosaurs, while Animus is populated by FunnyAnimal canids.
* WouldHurtAChild: Randorn killed literally everyone in an entire vixon tribe, except for [[SoleSurvivor Krystal]]. It's safe to say that Krystal wasn't the ''only'' child in the tribe.

''Dinosaur Planet'' was far into development when it was ultimately cancelled. Most, if not all, of the voice acting had been done, much of the game was finished, and it had been shown off at several events. No playable incarnation has ever been leaked, but you can watch an hour of gameplay including Krystal's first chapter [[https://youtu.be/cOVBRJToVDY here]]. If you want to play ''Dinosaur Planet'', you'll just have to play ''Star Fox Adventures''.

Removed Petting Zoo Person because that trope is going through TRS and the characters fit probably fit the new definition of Funny Animal instead. Added back Sabre example after asking about it in the "Is this an example?" thread; Amazing Technicolor Wildlife has a "Subtle and Minor Acceptable Breaks from Reality Examples Found in Specific Animated Works" section and Sabre is too brown for a wolf, afaik

''Dinosaur Planet'' was far into development when it was ultimately cancelled. Most, if not all, of the voice acting had been done, much of the game was finished, and it had been shown off at several events. Despite this, the game has never been shown to the public and can't be played. If you want to play ''Dinosaur Planet'', you'll just have to play ''Star Fox Adventures''.

''Dinosaur Planet'' was an ambitious swan-song for the UsefulNotes/Nintendo64. In development between 1999 and 2000, ''Dinosaur Planet'' pushed the hardware capabilities of the dying console. It would have been a swan song... if it had came out as expected.

In the late 1990s, Rareware had an idea for a new IP. It would be an ActionAdventure game based around an alien planet. The characters were anthropomorphic canines on a world populated with dinosaurs. This game was ''Dinosaur Planet''.

The two main characters are canines named Sabre and Krystal. Sabre is the son of a wizard named Randorn. Randorn adopted Krystal after killing her family. Both Sabre and Krystal are playable characters. They're used in different sections of the game but play similarly. Sabre wields a sword while Krystal wields a staff. Sabre has a sidekick named Tricky and Krystal's sidekick is Kyte.

As the game was a late release title, it was ultimately decided that the game should be moved to the upcoming UsefulNotes/NintendoGamecube instead. !!''Dinosaur Planet'' provides examples of:

* FantasticRacism: The Wolven Tribe and Vixon Tribe are rivals. The two species generally don't get along.
* FrothyMugsOfWater: Averted. Randorn hates having barely any whiskey around and he especially hates hangovers.

* KidSidekick: Tricky and Kite are two young dinosaura who tag along with Sabre and Krystal.
* NotBloodSiblings: Sabre and Krystal are love interests despite being adopted siblings.
* OutlivingOnesOffspring: Randorn sent one of his son's off to war, only for said son to die in battle. Randorn's grief and anger led him to wander off, find a camp of Vixon, and kill everyone but Krystal.
* SoleSurvivor: Randorn angrily killed an entire tribe. The next day he regretted his actions and adopted the sole survivor, Krystal.
* WorldOfFunnyAnimals: Dinosaur Planet is populated by non-anthropomorphic dinosaurs and FunnyAnimal foxes.
