* FandomNickname: Players are often referred to as Captains, Commanders, Admirals, or "Teitoku". The latter two are shared with those who also play VideoGame/KantaiCollection, given the shared theme between the two games. "Admiral" is seen by some of the fanbase as the most appropriate of these nicknames, because the player has multiple in-game "Commanders" (the guys you place on ships and assign skill points to) under his or her command.
* GameMod: The fandom was quick to put together a mod where each ship was represented by a cute girl in order to make WOWS a little more like VideoGame/KantaiCollection, and that mod was later expanded to include Kankore-like menus.

Ascended Fangirl: Karima Adebibe, the model hired for doing promotional stunts related with Legend. Unlike the rest of the models in the history of the franchise, she took the job due to being a long-lasting fan of the series, rather than just for the monetary gain. When asked about it in an interview years later she openly declared - with a visible Squee - the whole deal the best modeling job she could imagine, since she was paid for what she wanted to do all by herself anyway. And she really put effort into playing her role during all the meetings, knowing a lot of trivia from throughout the entire franchise and even correcting gathered fans on more obscure details, while doing so in-character.

Not sure if Lethal Joke Character as a trope belongs here

** The early Myogi counts as well. You can expect enemy planes to swarm you like angry mosquitoes as the first hull lacks any AntiAir. The second hull does add a couple small guns that can hit aircraft, but you will never be counting on them. The final hull however might as well be a modern Aegis Cruiser by comparison, as those pop guns get backed up by machine guns, more cannons, and even Dual-Purpose Artillery. Against a Langley's airwing, you can expect to come out on top if you're paying attention.
** The Phoenix as a whole is considered this by some compared to the Omaha that follows it (or for that matter, to the St. Louis that precedes it). It's armor might as well be made of balsa wood, the guns are placed in odd locations, and the AntiAir is pathetic until you've reached the third hull. However, those chasing down a Phoenix better be ready to turn sharply... for the Phoenix carries torpedoes.
** The Izumo as well. While many players grinding through her claim she's the worst ship in game, she still has a sizable devoted fan base. She has a very fast turret traverse for a battleship and mounts very high performing guns. An experienced and lucky player can vaporize all the enemy team's cruisers in minutes with her.
** The Smith, a Tier II premium American destroyer that was sold as part of Wargaming's anniversary specials, potentially counts as a Lethal Joke Ship. It's by far the slowest destroyer in the entire game with a top speed of 28 knots slower than most non-American battleships past Tier V, low-damage short-range torpedoes mounted in single-tube launchers, and her 76mm popguns are second smallest caliber main guns in the game. However, the reload times on the torpedoes (11 seconds!) more than compensate for the poor single-hit damage and the quick rate of fire allows a skilled captain to easily adapt to a target's evasive tactics.
** The Tier II premium Japanese destroyer Tachibana is very similar in all respects to the Smith. It has the same strengths (fast-firing guns, shockingly fast torpedo reload) and similar weaknesses (pathetically weak guns, low speed for a destroyer and a small number of short-range, low-damage torpedoes), though generally to a lesser extent. It has a more conventional torpedo layout of 2 centerline twin-tube launchers that can both fire to either side, a top speed of 30 knots and only half the torpedo reload speed of the Smith...but that's still a lightning-fast 22 seconds. And while its 76mm guns have a lower rate of fire than the Smith, they do slightly more HE damage, with 50% higher chance of starting fires and slightly better turret rotation time.
** The Mikasa, a Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905) era IJN Battleship, as a Tier II premiumnoticing a trend here? given out as an event reward ship to players who completed the in-game mission. She has a very slow speed, only has a 2x2 305mm Main Battery configurationone bow, one aft, two barrels each, and has limited firing arcsthe turrets sit close to the superstructure, meaning that it's hard to sail at an angle and fire both turrets, often limited to one turret without sailing completely broadside on to an enemy ship. There's also the issue of its average 30-second reload as most battleships which further reduces rate of fire, slow shell velocities, a huge shell dispersion size which greatly increases the chance of a miss at range, and poor AP performance, in a tier range where most such AP shells that hit are likely to overpen. Its to the point that most Captains basically pretend that AP doesn't exist on the ship, using HE shells only and hope for a hit. So, why would anyone want to use this ship at all? It has almost as much HP as an upgraded BB South Carolina at Tier III, her main battery HE shells have an alpha of 5100 damage with a 28% chance of causing a fire, which is only 2600 less than a successful Citadel hit with the AP shells, which is deadly at low tiers. She has extremely tight turning circle for a BB, and her armor reaches NoSell levels of thickness. But the best part about the Mikasa, is her 32 secondary guns. Any enemy that sails into their range will face a storm of shells that will rapidly deplete their HP until either they or Mikasa are sunk, or they get out of range. Combined with Mikasa's historical value, generally well liked appearance, and sheer ridiculous fun that Mikasa vs Mikasa battles are, makes Mikasa a very popular ship in game.
** Some ships were actually considered quite ridiculous when they were released but are now considered anything but. Two shining examples are Tirpitz and Saipan. When Tirpitz was released people scoffed at at a tier 8 BB having 15inch guns even if they got a 25 second reload and thought its torps were just a gimmick. They were wrong. Saipan boasts fewer aircraft in its squadrons than any other CV but makes up by having tier 9 aircraft. People initially thought it was weak but its planes proved really hard to kill.
