** 20th Century Fox was initially against Penelope Spheeris' idea of casting Creator/JimVarney as Jedd Clampett, wanting Creator/SamElliot in the role as they thought Varney was too well-known as Ernest P. Worrell and likely thought he would play the part as such. However Varney gave such an impressive screen test that Spheeris got her way and as such, Varney's performance as Jedd is one of the best things about the film.

%%!!In General:

%%* This was one of network president James T. Aubrey's "bosoms, broads and fun" series. He believed ViewersAreMorons. CBS chairman Bill Paley wanted more intelligent TV and despised this show; "The Smiling Cobra", though acknowledging Paley usually had an instinct about these things, put it on anyway. Aubrey was responsible for the long string of fantasy and rural sitcoms along with fast-moving detective dramas at CBS. If you think your grandparents' TV was innocent, watch these shows in reruns.
