** Near the end of the toyline's run there were plans for three large "Mega Head" playsets. Of the three, only "Mighty Max Assaults Skullmaster" was actually released. There was also one based on Skullmaster's minion Warmonger, and one called "Doom" which is based on an unknown villain (but not the Doom Dragon). These other two Mega Heads were advertised and even had working prototypes made for them, but they were never actually put into production.

* KeepCirculatingTheTapes: The series is sadly hard to find these days, at least in physical copy. The full series is up on Website/YouTube with the permission of the rights owners. It was last rerun on the Creator/USANetwork's Action Extreme Team block in the mid 90s.
* ScrewedByTheNetwork: The show was not very well liked by the network due to its dark tone. There was no way for censors to easily cut the darker moments without rendering entire episodes incomprehensible, and the network got tired of dealing with complaints about it. The show was cancelled halfway through the second season, abandoning that season's ResetButton ending, which was obviously intended to lead into a third season that never managed to get made.

This is not trivia.

* AbsenteeActor: Virgil and Norman do not appear in "Snakes and Laddies" (although both are still mentioned). To an extent, "Werewolves of Dunneglen," too. They do show up, but they've been arrested as murder suspects and spend the whole episode in jail while Max deals with the MonsterOfTheWeek on his own.

Hey Its That Guy cut by TRS decision. Ditto for Hey Its That Voice.

* HeyItsThatVoice: Max is Creator/RobPaulsen, Virgil is Creator/TonyJay (who even narrated a few of the later toy commercials), Norman is Creator/RichardMoll, Max's Mom is Creator/TressMacNeille, and of course Skullmaster is Creator/TimCurry.
** Creator/FrankWelker is Warmonger and various monsters, but as usual he's trickier to point out unless you've had experience watching cartoons with his monster voices. The exception is when he's voicing Lava Lord. So long as you know he did the voice of Megatron in Franchise/TransformersGeneration1, you'll know it's him because it's the same ever-so-creepy rasping voice.
** Similarly, fans of WesternAnimation/TheTick will instantly recognize Virgil's voice as Chairface Chippendale. (Now imagine Virgil etching his name into the moon with a high-powered heat ray.)
** Homer Simpson battles a lava monster in the very first episode.
-->"TASTE MY LOUIEVILLE SLUGGER, SUCKER!"
** In the first season finale, Beowulf is Creator/JimCummings using his Doyle voice, but with Swedish overtones.
** A stealthy version: Creator/RonPerlman does a guest voice in one episode, although it's hard to tell since he's a caveman who doesn't speak English.
** In the Mexican Spanish dub:
*** Max is Gaara of the Desert, Ichigo Kurosaki and Krillin.
*** Virgil was Genma Saotome
*** Norman was Chief Wiggum.

* ShowAccuracyToyAccuracy: Most of the episodes of the show were based loosely on toy playsets, with an emphasis on the word "loosely." Sometimes key elements are removed or added, often villains become anti-villains or even straight heroes, and their individual power levels are either ratcheted up or toned down.

*** Many more heroes and villains. There were planned to be eight sets of four (32 total characters) planned, presumably with four villain sets and four hero sets. Of the eight, only four of the Figure Packs are known. They are Skullmaster's Marauders, Norman's Heroes, Max's Avengers, and The Dark Company.

** It's been revealed there was also a planned fourth toyline called "Into the Battle Zone" that would've aged Max up a few years and had him and the other characters carrying guns around. From what can be seen it looks like it was trying to cash in on the trends governing gritty 90's comic books.

*** Vehicles, called Battle Wheels.
*** More of an emphasis on spring-loaded projectiles in the toys.
*** The previously mentioned Mega Heads, retooled as "Battle Fortresses".
