Old Shame is In-Universe only

* CreatorBacklash:
** Going into Literature/HarryPotter, he expected a disposable series of books, and was basically pretty condescending of the series. In his re-read review of the first chapter he said:
--->"Did most of you think that I was going to tear this series apart back then? Because I can sort of see why I thought what I did at the time, but now I want to vehemently defend this. YOU DON'T GET IT, JUST WAIT SHIT WILL GET REAL. I've become all of you. And it is wonderful."
** His read of Literature/MonstrousRegiment was a disaster in which some unfortunate timing issues caused him to fall squarely into the same problematic areas he usually rails against. In short, the new demands on his time after becoming a novelist himself caused him to read the site's comments far less, and thus he didn't see the fans' increasingly frustrated responses to a basic misunderstanding regarding the book's use of gender roles and came off like he was bullying them into accepting his own point of view, in some cases over women or transgender people who would naturally have a much more personal view of this stuff. After catching on, he felt driven to make a whole separate post apologizing for everything, including permanently banning one poster who he'd been vigorously defending without a full understanding of what they'd been saying. He also immediately set himself up to do a second read of the book where he could better understand what was actually going on in it.

* FanNickname: Commenters use rot13 to discuss spoilers. Sometimes, a character's name in rot13 will be amusing enough to become one of these. For instance: Wbanguna for Jonathan, Ybear for Lorne and Furybo for Shelob.
** And while he stopped doing Mark Plays before it got to be used, many were anticipating the fun of calling Wrex "Jerk."
** "Byvivre" for Olivier in Manga/FullmetalAlchemist. Given the character's badass nature, this led to "By Vivre!" taking on the meaning "that's awesome!"
** Literature/Discworld fans were rather pleased to discover that 'Nanny Ogg' in rot13 becomes "Anaal Btt". The HehHehYouSaidX is made all the sweeter by the knowledge that Nanny would have the exact same reaction.
*** Plus, Greebo is "Terrob." It's noted that it's a shame he wasn't named Greebe just to make it perfect.
** Before he read them, he could never quite remember the name of Literature/BekaCooper, so he started calling them the 'Doggy Books'- especially funny considering the series' darker tone. The name is now used throughout the Tamora Pierce fandom.
*** Ditto calling the four protagonists of Literature/CircleOfMagic "the goats".
** Benny from Series/Supernatural, who happens to be half of a popular HoYay couple, translates to "Oraal."
** Lexa from Series/The 100 is "Yrkn," with notes about how appropriate it is to pronounce it "your kin."
** "Funzfury" for the Angel Shamshel from Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion.

** The site was brought to Creator/NeilGaiman's attention while Mark was reviewing Literature/AmericanGods, and Gaiman read through a few pages and loved them. To quote Mr. Gaiman, "I enjoyed your American Gods read so much. It was like getting to look through a reader's eyes & find out what worked."
*** And then he warned Mark on Website/Twitter that he didn't think ComicBook/TheSandman really got good until volume 2.
** J. August Richards Tweeted that of course Gunn would marry him.
** Creator/SeananMcGuire alerted her Twitter followers in record time when he started reading Literature/Newsflesh.
** NK Jemison managed to find him and become a fan before he even started reviewing her own work.
** Diane Duane is another who started posting before he got to her work (though he'd already announced he would be doing it). She even offered a special discount on Literature/YoungWizards to members of the community who didn't yet own copies.
** Creator/TonyTodd started following him on Twitter the very same day he raved about the Deep Space Nine episode "The Visitor".
** John Rogers found his Series/Leverage reviews a while later, and asked people at the con Mark was going to next to buy him a beer.

** WesterbAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic was on the list for a while, until he got fed up with the Bronies constantly pestering him to watch it right now, often accompanied by a lot of racist and sexist stuff, plus huge spoilers. He ended up declaring he would never watch the show, even on his own time.

** He's said that he wishes he'd done the Franchise/MarvelCinematicUniverse on the site, since he has a ton of thoughts about it (mostly good ones). He had to settle for doing liveblogs on Twitter. Though he did give the full treatment to Agent Carter.
*** Jessica Jones will not be reviewed after several warnings that, as a rape victim and PTSD sufferer, the show's subject matter would be too personally upsetting to make the process any fun for anyone. However, he's still going to watch the show, leaving the door open for the other Netflix shows being covered.

** His read of Discworld/MonstrousRegiment was a disaster in which some unfortunate timing issues caused him to fall squarely into the same problematic areas he usually rails against.
