** Creator/GatesMcFadden (who played Cathy Ryan) was replaced by Creator/AnneArcher for the two subsequent films. A combination of scheduling conflicts (she was on a year-long hiatus from shooting ''Film/StarTrekTheNextGeneration'') and her role being reduced to TheCameo (most of the scenes involving her character were cut from the final print) likely played a role in her decision.

** Bond himself was played in the film series by Creator/SeanConnery (1962-1967), Creator/GeorgeLazenby (1969), Sean Connery [[TheOriginalDarrin again]] (1971), Creator/RogerMoore (1973-1985), Creator/TimothyDalton (1987-1989), Creator/PierceBrosnan (1995-2002) and Creator/DanielCraig (2006-2021). A seventh actor will be announced in either 2022 or 2023. According to WordOfGod all actors between Connery and Brosnan are supposed to be the same person whilst Craig's era is a full ContinuityReboot (thus technically Craig does not enter under this trope). On the first non-Connery Bond film ''Film/OnHerMajestysSecretService'', starring Lazenby, after the film's trademark opening action sequence results in this film's "Bond Girl" running away from him, Bond [[BreakingTheFourthWall looks directly into the camera and quips]] [[LampshadeHanging "This never happened to the other fellow!"]] However, the fact that Blofeld doesn't at first recognize him when he pretends to be Hilary Bray suggests that a plot element was carried over from the initial draft of the screenplay, in which Bond was explained to have undergone [[MagicPlasticSurgery plastic surgery]]. However, in the original book, this is indeed their first meeting.

** Miss Moneypenny was played by Creator/LoisMaxwell from 1962 to 1985, then recast with younger actress Creator/CarolineBliss when Bond was also de-aged by the casting of Creator/TimothyDalton in ''Film/TheLivingDaylights'', and then recast again with Creator/SamanthaBond in the part in ''Film/GoldenEye''. In ''Film/{{Skyfall}}'', Moneypenny reappears, now given a RaceLift and played by Creator/NaomieHarris.
** In the earliest Bond films, Blofeld was TheFaceless, played by Anthony Dawson and voiced by Eric Pohlmann. Then in the consecutive films ''Film/YouOnlyLiveTwice'', ''Film/OnHerMajestysSecretService'' and ''Film/DiamondsAreForever'', Blofeld was recast for each movie, played respectively by Creator/DonaldPleasence, Creator/TellySavalas and Creator/CharlesGray. [[LawyerFriendlyCameo A bald villain who is totally not Blofeld]] later made a cameo appearance in ''Film/ForYourEyesOnly'', played by Creator/JohnHollis and voiced by Robert Rietty. [[spoiler:In Spectre, he's played by Creator/ChristophWaltz]]. As with Felix Leiter, the films make no attempt at continuity between the different portrayals of the character, moving from meek, mild and scarred Pleasance to large, robust and earlobe-less Greek-American Telly Savalas to uber-sophisticated Charles Gray (who also had a full head of hair). ''Diamonds Are Forever'' also introduces the notion that there may be different, surgically altered individuals claiming to be Blofeld.

** To add further confusion to the issue the Craig era is the first official reboot, but as the producers liked Dench performance they kept her. Which means that Dench plays the same character in two different continuities, and is the first M on screen on one and the last on the other.

* Anne Cusack replaces Creator/CourteneyCox as Melissa Robinson Ventura in ''Film/AceVenturaJr.''

* ''Film/BackToTheFuture'':

** In ''Film/TheEmpireStrikesBack'', Palpatine was portrayed by veteran actress Marjorie Eaton in prosthetic makeup and voiced by Clive Revill. Creator/IanMcDiarmid replaced them in ''Film/ReturnOfTheJedi'' and the prequels, and then Creator/GeorgeLucas [[ReCut put him in the DVDs]] for ''ESB'' for continuity's sake.

** Creator/BillyCrudup ([[Franchise/TheFlash Henry Allen]] in ''Film/{{Justice|League2017}} [[Film/ZackSnydersJusticeLeague League]]'') was replaced by Creator/RonLivingston for ''Film/{{The Flash|2023}}'' as he was not available for the filming.

** ''Film/XMenApocalypse'' has Creator/OliviaMunn replace Meiling Melancon as Comicbook/{{Psylocke}}, while Lana Condor replaces Kea Wong as ComicBook/JubileeMarvelComics. Normally this would count as a case of TimeShiftedActor, but the new versions of those two are roughly the same ages as their counterparts in the original trilogy.

** ''Film/ShazamFuryOfTheGods'' has a variant. In the [[Film/Shazam2019 first movie]], Creator/GraceCarolineCurrey was Mary Bromfield while Creator/MichelleBorth was Mary's superheroine form. The sequel has Currey as both the normal young adult and the superheroine.

* In the European French dub of ''WesternAnimation/HotelTransylvania3SummerVacation'', Henri Guybet replaced the late Creator/MichelGalabru as Vlad Dracula.

* In the French dub of ''WesternAnimation/SpiderManIntoTheSpiderVerse'', Camélia Jordana voiced [[ComicBook/SpiderGwen Gwen Stacy/Spider-Gwen]]. Creator/ShirineBoutella replaced her in ''WesternAnimation/SpiderManAcrossTheSpiderVerse''.

* The ''Film/TeenageMutantNinjaTurtles'' films had Creator/JudithHoag play April O'Neil in the [[Film/TeenageMutantNinjaTurtles1990 first film]] and Paige Turco play her in the last two. Likewise, Donatello was voiced by Corey Feldman in the [[Film/TeenageMutantNinjaTurtles1990 first]] and [[Film/TeenageMutantNinjaTurtlesIII third]] movies but was unavailable in the second due to a stint in rehab and was voiced by Adam Carl. Raphael had a different voice actor in each of the three films (Josh Pais, Laurie Faso, and Tim Kelleher respectively). Also, Master Splinter was voiced by Kevin Clash[[note]]a.k.a. [[Series/SesameStreet Elmo]][[/note]] in the first two films and by James Murray in the [[Film/TeenageMutantNinjaTurtlesIII third]].

* Rachelle Lefèvre played vampire villainess Victoria in ''Literature/{{Twilight}}'' and ''New Moon''. Due to scheduling conflicts, she was replaced by Creator/BryceDallasHoward for ''Eclipse''.

** Victoria (Rachelle Lefevre) in ''[[Literature/{{Twilight}} The Twilight Saga: Eclipse]]'', as mentioned above.

** Mostly averted by the [=DTV=] sequel to ''WesternAnimation/{{The Hunchback of Notre Dame|Disney}}'', which brings back almost all the main voice cast except for Creator/DavidOgdenStiers (replaced by Creator/JimCummings) and the late Mary Wickes (Jane Withers, who filled in for her in some parts of the movie, took over in full).

* In ''WesternAnimation/TeenTitans'', the Master of Games was voiced by Creator/JimCummings. In ''WesternAnimation/TeenTitansGoVsTeenTitans'', he's voiced by Rhys Darby. Granted, he also looks different and [[spoiler:the version in the film is actually the Trigon of ''Go''.]]

* Almost all the characters in Disney's ''Film/ChristopherRobin'' were recast with mainly British voice actors, one exception being Pooh himself, with Jim Cummings reprising the role he first performed in [[WesternAnimation/TheNewAdventuresOfWinnieThePooh the beloved Saturday morning cartoon adaptation]]. His [[TalkingToHimself other role]] as Tigger was originally meant to be recast to Chris O'Dowd, but he walked from the film after his initial performance was not received well by test audiences, so Cummings [[TheOtherMarty filled in]] and reprised Tigger as well.

** For ''The Middle Kingdom'' again, Belgian singer Angèle replaced French model Laetitia Casta as Panacea (from ''Take on Caesar'' 24 years prior).

** Obelix ended up "darrinded" too with Creator/GerardDepardieu not coming back for the fifth film, being replaced by Gilles Lellouche.

* Liz Frasier played Mrs. Pike in TheMovie of ''Series/DadsArmy'' rather than Janet Davies at the order of Columbia Pictures.

** After ''Film/{{Suicide Squad|2016}}'', Creator/JaredLeto did not return to play ComicBook/TheJoker in ''Film/{{Birds of Prey|2020}}'' and was replaced by indie GothRock musician and performer Johnny Goth. Qualifies very much as FakeShemp given that he only appears in a very short flashback.

** Creator/BillyCrudup ([[Franchise/TheFlash Henry Allen]] in ''Film/{{Justice|League2017}} [[Film/ZackSnydersJusticeLeague League]]'') was replaced by Creator/RonLivingston for the ''Flash'' film as he was not available for the filming.

He sued a tabloid who called him a "wife beater" in the context of him staying in the franchise despite domestic violence allegations from ex-wife Creator/AmberHeard. However, he lost the case when the judge ruled that 12 of the 14 instances brought forth in court met the civil bar for DV (one was inconclusive and one hadn't had a full deposition so it wasn't ruled on) and was fired a few days after the ruling, in the middle of the [[Film/FantasticBeastsTheSecretsOfDumbledore third film's]] production. [[note]]Allegedly WB had done its own investigation into the situation that came to a similar conclusion as the court case and made the decision to fire him then but were just waiting for some sort of ruling from either the UK or another case in the US to fire him.[[/note]] His replacement Creator/MadsMikkelsen was officially signed on within three weeks of his firing. As with Dumbledore, the change goes unmentioned. A couple of dubs also changed from Depp's regular VA to Mikkelsen's including in Japanese where Creator/KazuhikoInoue replaced Creator/HiroakiHirata and in Latin American Spanish where Creator/GerardoReyero replaced Creator/RicardoTejedo. Funnily enough, that also gives the franchise its first intance of TheDanza because Gerardo and Gellert are different version of the same name and the character's name is Gerardo in many translations.

* ''WesternAnimation/{{Cars}}'' series:

* Creator/MatthewBroderick played Film/InspectorGadget in the 1999 live-action feature film adaptation. For its 2003 direct-to-video sequel, Broderick was replaced by French Stewart (for the record, with the exception of D.L. Hughley as the voice of the Gadgetmobile, ''none'' of the cast of the 1999 film returned for the sequel).

** ''Film/XMenTheLastStand'' has Bill Duke playing "Secretary Trask", who was supposed to be Bolivar Trask... until the character appeared played by Creator/PeterDinklage in ''Film/XMenDaysOfFuturePast''. But Duke's character never has his first name mentioned, making for a {{handwave}} case of NamesTheSame, and the creators added that ''Days of Future Past'' is all about, well, changing the past, so some characters turned out slightly differently to the original timeline.
