* The new remix of "Tiger!" Tiger!" pays tribute to classic arcade games, particularly ''{{VideoGame/Gradius}}''.

* Corrin's Classic Mode picture in ''Wii U'' is based on the full collage of ''VideoGame/FireEmblemFates''. On the left, [[VideoGame/FireEmblemAwakening Robin]] represents [[TeenGenius Leo]] (complete with his Nosferatu tome's purple color matching Leo's Brynhildr), while [[Franchise/TheLegendOfZelda Ganondorf]] represents [[BlackKnight Xander]]. On the right [[VideoGame/KidIcarus Pit]] represents [[TheCynic Takumi]], while [[VideoGame/SuperMarioBros Bowser]] represents [[RedIsHeroic Ryoma]]. In the middle, Palutena represents [[DanceBattler Azura]]. No Smash Bros. equivalents for Hinoka, Sakura, Elise, and Camilla have been seen, however.

** Meanwhile, his Classic Mode picture on the 3DS is a reference to the classic winscreens from the CPS-1 versions of ''VideoGame/StreetFighterII'', as it has Ryu in a pose similar to his World Warrior character select portrait on one side, and a very beat up Little Mac on the other.

* One of my online tournaments for Ultimate is all the characters from the 90s. The English title of the tournament is named [[Manga/InitialD Fighting in the 90s]].

* Lucas's Up-Tilt and both Samus' Up-Air looks strangely like the [[VideoGame/FatalFury Rising Tackle]].

* Many of the alternate costumes a character can put on in the series is one of these, although some are extremely obscure. To name a few:

* One of Mega Man's normals is a [[{{Shoryuken}} Shory]][[StreetFighter uken]]. This is specifically the Mega Upper from his appearances in the ''VideoGame/MarvelVsCapcom'' series (and ''VideoGame/MegaMan2ThePowerFighters'' before that).

* In ''Ultimate'', Palutena and Viridi mention that Ryu has fought all kinds of opponents over the years, including [[VideoGame/XMenVsSTreetFighter mutants]] and [[VideoGame/MarvelVsCapcom superheroes]].
