The series began with a [[PoorlyDisguisedPilot backdoor pilot]] ("The Originals") that aired on April 25, 2013 as part of the fourth season of ''The Vampire Diaries''. Before then, the Mikaelsons had all appeared in that series, with Klaus being a part of the main cast from season three to four. A day after the pilot aired, The CW gave a series order, and ''The Originals'' began airing on October 3, 2013, the same day as the debut of its parent series' fifth season. In July 2017, it was announced that the series would end with season five. ''Series/{{Legacies}}'', a spinoff focusing on Klaus' daughter, Hope (played by Creator/DanielleRoseRussell, who is [[FinalSeasonCasting part of the final season's cast]]), was given a straight-to-series order in May 2018, and began airing that October.

''The Originals'' is a spin-off of ''Series/TheVampireDiaries'' that focuses on Klaus in New Orleans and his relationships with his elder brother Elijah and his younger sister Rebekah as well as with his former protege Marcel, who now runs the city. It first aired as a BackDoorPilot and the series was ordered April 26, 2013 to start airing on Creator/TheCW on October, 3, 2013. It is the second entry in Series/TheVampireDiariesUniverse.

Her lover, Keelin, doesn't do much fighting on-screen, but she still managed to fight off [[OffscreenMomentOfAwesome an entire group of assassins]] all by herself.

* AbandonedHospital: Sabine and Genevieve kidnap Klaus and Rebekah and take them there, using the familiar surroundings and a spell to force [[{{Flashback}} Rebekah to relive past events]] when she and Marcel [[spoiler: tricked Genevieve to summon Mikael to New Orleans..]].
* AbortedArc: The subplot of Elijah mentoring a newly turned vampire Gia and the developed romance between the two appears to not only have been dropped but completely forgotten about a few episodes later.

* AffablyEvil: Marcel.

All three are willing to leave bodies in their wake and each with varying morality.

** It seems as though Klaus is drawn to certain types of girls with a certain look (blonde with blue eyes) and attitude. Caroline and Camille anyone?
** Rebekah shares a few of these traits, too...hmm. (see IncestSubtext below).

* IDidWhatIHadToDo: [[spoiler: Oliver collaborated with another faction (heavily implied to be the humans) to launch the (initial) terrorist attack against his own pack, so they could get up and finally fight for the respect they don't have. And when he tearfully confesses to an injured Eve, he smothers her to death with a pillow and starts to rally the wolves.]]

Unfortunately, later in the season she is given a lethal bite by Lucien to spite Klaus. She dies in his arms again - for real this time.]]

* WouldHurtAChild: Klaus mentality of ' With us, or against us' extends to teenagers as well. As Davina found out at [[spoiler: the cost of Tim's life...]]

* BackForTheFinale: The series finale has a chained-up Klaus [[spoiler: hallucinating the sight of Camille and Michael]].
* BackFromTheDead: It's a show about vampire; what did you expect? More plot relevant examples include:

Initially it appears to be Marcel or Klaus, [[spoiler: and then [[StarterVillain Sophie Deveraux]] is revealed to be playing them both, then Sophie is killed and Celeste seems to take the role, but she proves to be DiscOneFinalBoss. In the last episodes of the season the BigBadEnsemble is in full effect with Genevieve, who becomes the leader of the witches after Celeste's death, Monique, who acts as her DragonInChief, Franesca Correa, who pretending to lead the humans but is in fact setting up the werewolves to take over New Orlens, and Mikael, who spends his time up until the season finale preparing for his resurrection. Ultimately Esther is revealed to be behind everything the witches where up to, leading to her own resurrection at the end of the season.]]

* TheDreaded: Even most older vampires are terrified by the Mikaelsons' very reputations and how they back it up with horribly violent acts (especially Klaus) makes you realize why they're in power.

Can easily throw around an Original like a rag doll and mind wipe them for equal measure.]] She gained this power by involuntarily absorbing the power of three Witch girls that were slaughtered in the Harvest Ritual right before Marcel took her away.

* TheSmurfettePrinciple: Rebekah is the token female of the Original family, though the trope is averted elsewhere in the show.

After being forced to relive his most violent acts, he becomes blatantly obsessive-compulsive about being clean.

* ParentalHypocrisy: Klaus is furious that Marcel has become a volatile, ambitious, overlord who holds the power of life and death. Who is also borderline AxCrazy when he is slighted and serves his own interests first. All in the name of family and respect.
