Maya is introduced as the main suspect of Mia's murder, and she becomes Phoenix's loyal companion after he gets her acquitted. She's the main assistant to Phoenix in the first three games, though she decides to accept her role as the Master of Kurain Village at the end of ''Trials and Tribulations'', resulting in her absence in the fourth and fifth games. She's a major character in ''Spirit of Justice'', where Phoenix visiting her in Khura'in is the catalyst for the plot. Phoenix is very fond of her and will go to great lengths to ensure her well-being.
